You are way off! The Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933 in US, one of whose component was the establishment of parity prices aimed to ensure that agricultural products would maintain a price level relative to the prices farmers received in the pre-World War I period, led to the great depression because of overproduction of agricultural goods, storage costs for the government because of surpluses and impact on consumers because of higher prices in food which was extremely burdensome on them.

Setting minimum purchase prices for all of the farm produce may provide short-term relief to farmers but is bound to have long-term negative consequences on agricultural markets, efficiency, and consumer welfare. Government / people don't have endless supply of money just so they could give relief to one segment of the population. Even so, there is an MSP on certain kharif and rabi crops.

itnaaa truth bombs in one reply 🍾🍾🍾. I avoided elaborating on this as in addition to what you said there is so much wrong. They have to dump crops etc. heck having spent time in energy sector even ethanol with fuel is a bad idea for US vs say Brazil where economics are v different.

I do appreciate and respect the role of farmers. Anna daata sukhi bhava! But to demand MSP assurance across all crops is preposterous! Consider this: tobacco is also a crop. Do they want an MSP there too? As it is, the average price they get for tobacco is higher than the cost of cultivation.

We respect farmers and all professions. Should a person making your clothes and textiles say--- remove your colthes unless i am guaranteed MSP - Heck no yaar. Its all about coexistence in economics as well. And as you said. same for crops. At the same time, if govt makes exceptions like subsidised insurance for weather, its great. At the same time it is still not offered to all but I get it.

Inkaa demands kuch alag heee hain. TBH I think this 25k people protesting has noting to do with MSP as its a nonsensical demand.

Agar yeah hota --- I would be all for doing something. From free seeds to other things. 100% supporthota mera.

But not for fake farmers with brand new tractors never used on farm lands even trying to pretend they have a genuine MSP issue.
