Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cervix (lower part of the uterus). Cervical cancer can be prevented with regular screenings and vaccinations. Depending on the severity various methods of screening and treatment are available. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Screening procedure like PAP test(PAP smear) can help to detect the cancerous cells at an early stage. Other than that vaccination options are available(HPV vaccine). During the budget speech, Finance Minster Nirmala Sitharaman stated, "Our government will encourage vaccination for girls aged 9 to 14 years as a preventive measure against cervical cancer".

Even the government is going to take pro-active steps to get the young girls between the age of 9-14.

In olden days ladies were hesitant to visit male doctors and many times the men folk did not allow the women in their family to visit male doctors for gynac problems. Many lives have been lost in the past . TIMES HAVE CHANGED.

We have lady Gynacs in every locality now .

This is one notorious cancer which causes very little symptoms and women tend to ignore the minor signs n symptoms

Let’s see how to screen for this life threatening cancer ..

PAP Smear test .

Procedure explained in simple language .

PAP smear test is a very very simple and quite reliable . False positive and false negative do happen but it’s corroborated with other tests to arrive at diagnosis .

It was started more then 100 yrs ago and still in use till date .

A small wooden spatula ..(something resembling a thin wooden spoon) is used to take a little smear from the mouth of cervix .
It is an OPD procedure . Takes less than a minute to do the procedure , it’s painless n requires no anaesthesia .
Best time is 10-15 days after last menstrual period . For post menopausal women it can be done any time .

(Abstinence from sex is advisable for 3 days before undergoing this test to get best results )

When to do PAPS test
For teenagers it’s not a routine procedure .

Women age 21 to 29 should have a Paps test alone every 3 years.

HPV testing alone can be considered for women who are 25 to 29, but Paps tests are preferred. Women age 30 to 65 have three options for testing. They can have both a Paps test and an HPV test every 5 yrs

years. If there is family history and mild symptoms post menopausal ladies have been advised this test one a year also (depending on risk factors)

PAPS test can detect pre cancerous changes,

It can detect cancer , and its type .
test for HPV can be done at the same time .
