Casting for Devdas was perfect and as Akash said "Perfection ko improve karna mushkil hota hai" , in this case it was impossible, SLB wouldn't have found a better cast.

I believe Kajol was the first choice for Devdas in the Paro role but she rejected it. Basically every SRK film back then was offered to her first but she would reject them (Mohabbatein, Veer-Zaara, KANK).

She and Aish were also both up for Gadar.

Yes, I forgot that one too. The pecking order back then seemed to be Kajol then Aishwarya when it came to SRK films.

Many have also said that the failure of Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani is what killed Juhi's career as a leading lady and if it had not flopped, she would have continued to star alongside SRK in their other productions like Chalte Chalte and Paheli.

I could understand for Aish and SRK, but why should Madhuri had been troubled at that time?

I wonder if that had been similar to other A-list actors...(the "pecking order")

I don't know why he said that about her either. It seems like he was so angry at Bhansali, SRK, and Aish that he took his anger out on Madhuri as well just by association. He said the below.

“I have not seen Devdas but Sanjay felt that she was going through a lot of trouble and was suited for her character. Ditto with Shah Rukh and Madhuri. I am the only one who does not have any problems. So I did not get the role."
