In Mahabharata Krishna was always an important yet secondary character, he wasn't the lead but main support of leads, his individual story was of hardly any importance in MB, and was always ignored. His story was covered separately in other books but not in MB
Won't comment on Shakuni since TV shows made him an important character though he was much a very secondary less important character.
There can obviously be multiple leads but here Neil isn't, he will be the guiding force of lead but I doubt he will be ever given center stage
But in real Mahabharata ( not tv shows) there was Krishna's backstory + as per Shakuni it's a long story , but if I tell you in short he was genuinely not in the side of Kauravas too . He promised his father that he would destroy the whole kuru vansh . So he was supporting Kauravas so that it could lead to that massive war and by that Kuru vansh would be over
