Won't comment on Shakuni since TV shows made him an important character though he was much a very secondary less important character.

There can obviously be multiple leads but here Neil isn't, he will be the guiding force of lead but I doubt he will be ever given center stage

But in real Mahabharata ( not tv shows) there was Krishna's backstory + as per Shakuni it's a long story , but if I tell you in short he was genuinely not in the side of Kauravas too . He promised his father that he would destroy the whole kuru vansh . So he was supporting Kauravas so that it could lead to that massive war and by that Kuru vansh would be over

That's why I said her love was unconditional earlier..

Only thing that made her happy was to be there for DJ when he needs her. She didn't expect anything in return from him, not even his presence

Now it's different she wants a status in lieu of her love

Krishna's backstory is coveted in 2-3 chapters, his actual story is in HarivanshPuran and Sreemad Bhagwatam with former being kind of spin off to Mahabharata.

Nowhere is Krishna's backstory highlighted in Mahabharata.

The backstory of Shakuni you are saying is nowhere in Mahabharata, in fact it's not even hinted there. Shakuni was the one who always asked Duryodhan to reconcile with Pandavas (at least twice)

The story of one rice grain is completely fake too, since Shakuni's brothers are very well mentioned in the war, so definitely he wasn't the only one left

That is the folklore which was taken up with 15th century retelling with other stories like Vajra body of Duryodhan by Gandhari, though Mahabharata says just the opposite

He is still the same as he was in start, we assumed that there are layers to be uncovered which we now know isn't.

Yes he will have importance but not individual importance.

People are expecting otherwise that's why getting disappointed

That mystery was in a 1st-2nd month of show ....now he is no more mysterious but yes a prominent character in the show. Since the show is from Yuvika's POV, they wrap neil's backstory in 2 episodes during vidur's arrest. Uske baad kuch nai mila

That's what I want to say, he is definitely among the most important characters but he isn't the one who would get a centerstage because story is of Yuvika and her fight with DJ & gang

People expect more from him so are getting disappointed

Also that mysterious aura actually led to nothing

I never believed that he was one of the lead, but he is one of the key characters. In fact, I think he is between the lead and the key character. I don't know what we call that.

But the thing is that they didn't utilise him properly in the core plot yet. In fact, individually kuch kiya nai uske characters ka thnag se. Now with Neivika romance, neil is getting ss consistently in every episode. Otherwise, anything related to him is shown in the span of 1-2 weeks.
