I've been meaning to make this post since the time the show started and Agastya's character was revealed to us. Finally, here goes!!!
Four Lions and Gul are known to write well etched male leads in their shows. Their love stories are all about balance, showing layers and depth to their male leads (MSK/ ASR1/ ASR2/ AAK/ SSO and now ASC). After careful observation and thought, I found a lot of similarities between the character of Agastya Singh Chaudhary and Fitzwilliam Darcy (I am biased towards my most fictional character of all times, Will Darcy.)
This post is an attempt to list out characteristics that I found similar in both these men.
- Wealthy and Privileged - Both Darcy and Agastya are extremely wealthy and come from privilege. Oh what luck it is to be born rich (or marry rich)
- Highly prejudiced - Darcy made demeaning remarks about Lizzy's social standing and Agastya does the same to Imlie time and again. While Darcy had reasons (the obvious greed of her family and class difference which mattered in those days), Agastya has his reasons too (which may seem valid to him).
- Intelligent - Both are intelligent and work towards increasing the wealth of the family.
- Loyalty and righteousness - Darcy was extremely loyal to his friend, Mr. Bingley and tried to protect him from the greedy Bennet family. He was also extremely righteous in his handling of Mr. Wickham. Similarly, Agastya is an extremely righteous person. He wants to protect the name and legacy of his family business and wants to run it using legal ways.
- Kind, loving and caring - Darcy watches out for people he loves (his sister Georgia, Lizzy's sister Lydia, Lizzy's older sister Jane, his best friend Mr. Bingley). Similarly, Agastya loves his family (including his step mom and sister) and despite their hatred, always wants to protect them. Both these men don't want any credit for their kindness and would prefer doing good deeds without any show/ announcement.
- In love with strong willed women - Darcy and Agastya (in the future) both fell in love with women who had a strong character and were able to point out their prejudice. Both women were beneath their respective social statuses but they were helpless when it came to love. Eventually all the pride and prejudice they had was thrown out of the window as love came knocking at the door.
- Determined - Both men are determined and stay strong while fighting for their love. Agastya too will go against his family and ensure Imlie stays in his life. He will also have to go through a proper redemption once he falls in love with Imlie. Just the way Darcy had to wait a long time and change his ways to have Lizzie accept and love him, the same will hold true for Agastya and Imlie.
- A thorough gentleman - Both of them value consent and will never force themselves on the woman they love.
Before I close, just want to point out that both Darcy and Agastya are not perfect in any way. In fact, both are deeply flawed. Just the way Darcy realized how badly prejudiced he was and how much his pride influenced his actions and made amends, Agastya will also have a good redemption arc.
