My observation recently has been how women in the show are against Katha compared to how men are shown (supportive of Vian etc.,). Vian's mom (Teji?), her BFF, and now Vian's aunt too. Today's precap showed another woman interested in breaking the marriage of the leads.

Why?

There are some women are nice as well (Katha's roommate and Katha's mother-in-law, for example), but the overwhelming number of women acting as antagonists, willing to bring down Katha, is disturbing to watch. I am strictly against the "vamps" in Indian Telly — they're what keep me away from watching Indian TV all the time. These characters don't have any nuanced psychological causes to behave the way they do, other than that they do want to act villainous.

This, I know, isn't exclusive to Katha only, but I honestly expected something different from the writers of KA. It seemed like an episode of some Ekta soap. Teji as a mom sucks. Men in their adulthood obsessing over their mothers suffer from Oedipus complex. What is the mother equivalent of this complex? There has to be one.

Sorry, I just ranted. It used to be a well-written show, but now it's the caricature of its former self with tons of 'I'm an ITV show and I don't think Indian audoe deserves better storytelling' sprinkled over all the episodes.

Teji does have nuanced psychological causes. Farah and Maya are just supporting Teji because why not? . They are related for a very long time. Since you are catching glimpses of this show, it won't be so easy for you to understand. Because if I say it, you will misinterpret it. But, right now, trust me Teji got valid reasons. I have been living the characters for a month now. You can ask any forum member :)

Only person who is a vamp is Reet. I don't know what her problem is but, she doesn't seem to learn. Earlier, makers gave her a somewhat genuine problem that she can't see all the attention shifted to Katha. However, what makes her bearable is that she is not creating unnecessary evil chaos. Like, torturing Aarav, Khaane mein zeher milana, kheer mein namak daalna, koi bhi event koi ruin karna just to get pleasure and so on. Yes, she gets annoyed whenever Katha gets attention but, she didn't break the code of conduct of a high class family. She mocks or creates misunderstandings in a way which is realistic (I have seen people just like reet within my own family). For example, when Katha came to Grewal house first time, she told her that handling guests is her department (she meant Katha is still a guest), and in the same episode she told Aarav to rest because he is still recovering from cancer (she actually didn't want Aarav to play with her daughters).

I have seen such indirect mockery in which you mock the person in front of you and the person in front of you has no idea about it, in my family itself. But, despite all this mockery, no one delibrately ruins any family functions like the vamps in Ekta Kapoor soaps do. Till now, all family events went smoothly without drama which is a rarity in case of Ekta kapoor soaps. Tell me one even in Kumkum Bhagya or Kundali Bhagya which went smoothly without any drama.

Coming to question why women are against each other. Nothing can be done. To change that, you need to change entire story. Teji got valid reasons to be against Katha while Farah and Maya have no option but, to be with her because they are related for a very long time. Reet is an a$$hole. She got reasons too.

Neerja, Kavita, Falguni Ben had been supportive of Katha and those are very nice.

When, it comes to male leads, they simply don't work as Villians. Aniruddh is a potential Villian, he is funny but, he is bussiness Rival. He will not poke his recontructed nose in the family matters. Agar kiya toh puri neev heen hil jayegi. Also, for a very long time, internal conflicts had been a antagonist so, no need for Villian. And, seeing the new track this internal conflict antagonist is coming again.

Right now, what makers are trying to convey through Teji, Maya and Farah is that they are pointing some very obvious questions which needs to be answered in case of such marriages. It is applicable in case of widow remarriages and also for marriages which happen between people of drastically different financial background. And, through this so called On the Surface Evil track , Under the surface they are showing a way, how to tackle the problems in these kind of marriages. Those problems are:

1. How will child adjust to this changing environment. What will happen if the change is too sudden for the child

2. Should Surname be inherited and is it necessity?

3. Who should have higher stake in upbringing of child in such marriages

4. What is the scope for another child.

5. How couples can solve their problems

6. How can such couples adjust to each other's environment.

Honestly, none of these questions are wrong or evil. Although they are portraying these three as vamps for now, the things which they are doing are necessary or else such marriages are bound to fail. Servants, drivers, expensive toys, expensive camps and high-end schools are all normal in such rich households.

Only thing I don't like is their overacting and sometimes they get melodramatic. However, makers know this and Maya always rebukes Teji for being melodramatic. This kind of reminds me of Ekta Kapoor soaps but, Maya did always brings me back to this show because she is good.

So, again, writers are showing their cleverness through this plot. Its upto the smart audience to understand their cleverness. Those who can't understand, wait for a few episodes till they spoonfeed you. I think audience will soon realize what is going on it won't be long. Makers are making sure that they don't make these three so evil that they become irredeemable.

He didn't exactly tell that about her son but told her to die with her son(indirectly gave a damn about her son's death)

No wonder she had to resort to something drastic like ONS. Now she'll be the one blamed for it. 💀

ITV has a long, long way to go. They make shows for a particular set of audience who don't care about storytelling and characterization the way we do. Most of the people are okay with lame drama, even welcome it and savour it. I doubt online ratings even count for the TRP calculations.

Edit: ratings. not rantings.

Thanks for your replies, however, please refrain from commenting "only clever audience can understand it". Just because their interpretation of the scenes/characters is different from that of yours doesn't make them intellectually inadequate. Your personal interpretation of them also doesn't make you intellectually superior to others. So, please. ITV writers shouldn't be defended at the expense of fellow audience.

My problem with Teji and her gang and the writing concerning them is that for a show that was supposed to be different, the writers couldn't help but pit women against the other woman. 'A woman is another woman's worst enemy' is a phrase men bring to blame women. All of this has been perpetuated by TV shows where a woman hates, conspires to bring down other woman. And it sucks.

I'm allergic to the villains in ITV shows. They never seem to lose. There's never any redemption. The narrative always sides with them. If they leave once after their truth reveal, they return and it goes in circles and circles. If Teji and her gang is used as a plot device to solve the issues between the leads, then cool. But that wouldn't be the case most likely.
