Again, I respond to your post without already having read the comments...

I never gave it a second thought, I just enjoyed his out-of-the-box style.

I don't think, Ranveer is gay or bi or whatever...I know boys and (straight) men who just like it colourful and crazy and I always liked that Indian like it colourful, too. It also reminds me of times where it wasn't only fancy that men sport long hair, jewellery and colourful clothes but also fashionable.

It was more his (to my eyes forced) overemotional/overenergetic behaviour that bothered me (for him, not for me, as it let me think of frequent coke-using - which may have happened or not).

And if they respect it, sone pe suhaga. I'm not Sikh, yet I covered my head when I went to my 1st gurudwara visit because even I believe we should respect the place and the people.

It's important to be respectful and not treat the accessories as just another jewellery and their festival as just another colour run like you said.

I'm desperately waiting for HER portions in S2.

That show has to be the most awaited S2 of any Indian series.

Possibly my favourite after Tabbar in the Indian streaming scene.

I am genuinely curious to understand what you believe queer culture to be and how Ranveer appropriates it. None of the examples you have stated seem cultural appropriation to me.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with straight artists catering to their queer fanbases. Back in the day, gay men would be lynched for even looking at a straight man wrong. Even today gay men are often attacked by straight men who think their masculinity is questioned if a gay man smiles or flirts with them. So it is actually refreshing to have cishet men comfortable with themselves to accept and even encourage the gay gaze. You can receive queer attention gracefully - it is not appropriation but allyship.

There is merit to the argument that LGBTQ performers should perform LGBTQ roles. But the LGBTQ community is divided on this stance. The problem with this stance is that it requires performers to be out. Not everyone is comfortable being out. In many countries like India, it is unsafe to be out, and many people are still closeted. Being restrictive can inadvertently deny a queer person from representing something that resonates with them. There have also been people like Chyler Leigh who have discovered their sexuality after playing a queer character.

You also have actors like Natasha Lyonne and Darren Criss, who are straight but known for playing gay characters. The LGBTQ community loves them because there is a difference between performing for accolades and attention vs. performing to be an ally and share someone's story authentically.

There is actually nothing wrong with subverting masculinity. Gendering fashion has been the most absurd thing people do. Clothes and makeup are supposed to make you feel comfortable and good. When you look at the big picture, women are given a lot of leeway - they can wear jeans, cut their hair short, play sports, and go makeup free. Men, on the other hand, aren't allowed to stray even a little bit without having their sexuality or gender identity questioned. There is some insidious misogyny in the double standard.

Ranveer Singh isn't the only man subverting masculinity. More dads are joining their daughters in princess tea parties, wearing matching ballerina outfits for Halloween and letting their kids paint their nails or braid their hair. Manly men like Jason Momoa and John Cena have worn makeup and painted nails. David Beckham has worn skirts. And heck - men in Scottish and Nordic cultures have worn skirts for generations. It is not appropriating queerness but letting go of the notion that wearing a dress, painting your nails, and wearing makeup prevents you from being a man.

Finally, the fact is real people cannot queer bait. You do not know what a person's sexuality and gender identity is. You cannot expect everyone to be open and transparent about their sexuality and gender expression. You have to accept that people are just expressing themselves authentically and living their full lives. Didn't we learn anything from Kit Connor? This kind of cultural gatekeeping forced a poor young teenage boy to publicly out himself because of the bullying and harassment. The worst part is that it is always the so-called straight allies that do the gatekeeping.

As for becoming a Dhobi ka kutta, ask Swifties and Harries if the mixed messaging has ever deterred them.

TBH, from my perspective, everything Ranveer says and does has given pure cishet male energy. Not even an ounce of his persona has appeared remotely fruity to me. Honestly, Queer folks would reject his fashion sense. It is too bizarre, wacky, and over the top. It doesn't scream YAS. It doesn't slay. Most queers would say, "You Need to Calm Down."

WTF is Ranveer's persona in the movie? One forum member calls him an alpha. Another forum member says he appropriates queer culture.

These two directly conflict with each other. Which is it?
