Mirza Beg Asadullah Khan (1797-1868), also known as Mirza Ghalib, was an Indian poet of Central Asian descent. He was popularly known by the pen names, Ghalib and Asad.

Ghalib's best poems were written in three forms: ghazal (lyric), masnavi (moralistic or mystical parable), and qasidah (panegyric). Ghalib took the concept of ghazals and changed them from an expression of anguish in love to philosophies of life.

Ghalib had left for Kolkata in November 1826 and reached the capital of British India in February 1828. In one of his couplets, he had written: Triumphant, we reached Calcutta and washed away the scar of distance from loved ones with wine”.

Based on the life of well-known poet Mirza Ghalib, the film was acclaimed upon release. It stars Bharat Bhushan as Ghalib and Suraiya as his courtesan lover.

This Marathi song is in the voice of Damayantī addressing Nala, having fallen in love with him without ever meeting him. Like the whole world today, she's unable to identify the Niṣadha country that his name made famous.

Song: Rājahaṃsa Sāṅgato

Singer: Asha Bhosle

Movie: Suvāsinī (1961)

Actor: Seema Deo, Ramesh Deo, Chandrakant Gokhale

Lyricist: Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar

Music: Sudhir Phadke

Lyrics

Rājahaṃsa sāṅgato kīrticyā tujhyā kathā

Hṛdayi prīta zāgate zāṇatā azāṇatā

The royal swan tells tales of your fame

Love's awake in my heart, knowing or unknowing

Pāhile tulā na mī tarihi nitya pāhate

Lāzunī manomanī ugiça dhunda rāhate

Ṭhāuka na mazasi zarī Niṣadha deśa koṇatā

I haven't seen you, and yet I always see you

Blushing within my mind, needlessly I stay entranced

Although I don't know Niṣadha is which country

Divasa-rātra oḍhaṇī yā manāsa lāgate

Tujhiça zāhalyāparī mī sad'aiva vāgate

Maitriṇīṃsa sāṅgate tujhi amola yogyatā

Day and night the pull possesses my mind

I always behave as if I've become only yours

To my friends I tell your invaluable eligibility

Nimantraṇāvinā punhā haṃsa yei to vanī

Nāda-citra rekhito tuzheça manda kūjanī

Veḍa vāḍhavūna to uḍuna zāya māgutā

Uninvited, again that swan comes to the garden

Sketches a sound-portrait of you with soft honking

Augments my craze, then he goes flying back

Meera, better known as Mirabai and venerated as Sant Meerabai, was a 16th-century Hindu mystic poet and devotee of Krishna. She is a celebrated Bhakti saint.

Meera started visiting Shri Krishna's temple daily after finishing all her daily chores. She used to worship Shri Krishna and sing Bhajans in her melodious voice. Seeing this, her mother-in-law got worried and asked her to worship Kali Mata instead.

Meera broke many social norms at the time. She accepted Raidas (Ravidas), a Dalit by birth, as her guru ( Guru Miliyaa Raidasjee ) left her family for Sri Krishna, and dedicated herself to that Bhakti yoga. It is believed that it was Raidas who gave her that statue of Krishna, all those years ago, when she was a small girl. Smiling at the innocence of Meerabai, her mother looked around and found an idol of Sri Krishna. She pointed at the idol and said that Meera would be married to Krishna. Veera Kumari (Meerabai's mother) soon forgot the banter. However, Meerabai instantly fell in love with Krishna.

Meera's poems are called Meera's Bhajans. She had too much love for her god and sacrificed everything, even her family, for god and attained Moksha through Bhakti Yoga.

Tora Mann Darpan Kehlaye Song - English Translation

Your mind is the mirror.

That reflects both good and bad,

It watches the flow and reveals to all!

Mind is verily God, the mind is all-powerful,

There is nothing higher than the mind.

Whenever a mind is illumined, the world seems full of light.

On this illumined mirror of the mind,

O man, Let not dirt ever settle.

Be it blossoms of pleasure or thorns of pain, the

Mind is the basis of everything;

You can hide nothing from the mind,

For, it has one-thousand eyes!

Maybe you can run away from the world, But from the mind, never.

A prospective bride, asked if she can sing, chooses a Marathi song in the voice of Kaṇva advising Śakuntalā to follow all male chauvinistic expectations when she moves in with her philandering husband Duṣyanta. The singer is unaware that the guests don't want a bride; they want a tamāśā performer.

Song: Zā Mulī Śakuntale Sāsarī

Singer: Manik Varma, Sampada Mane

Movie: Deva Pāvalā (1950)

Actor: Sulochana

Lyricist: Gajanan Digambar Madgulkar

Music: Purushottam Lakshman Deshpande

Lyrics

Zā mulī Śakuntale sāsarī

Āvarī ḍoḷyāṃmadhalyā sarī

Go, girl, Śakuntalā, to your marital home

Hold back the streams within your eyes

Vaḍīla maṇḍaḷī asatīla koṇī

Vāgaça tyāñcyā ardhyā vacanī

Savatīlāgī mānunī bahiṇī

Rāhī sadā hāsarī

There will be some elderly persons there

Obey even if they give half an order

With co-wives, regard as your sisters

Remain always cheerful

Pati-sevā he brīda āpule

Devāhūna tī thora pāule

Rāgāvūna te zarī bolale

Bolū nako tyāvarī

Husband-service is your vow

Those feet are superior to God

Even if he speaks furiously

Don't speak thereafter

Donhī kuḷāṃçe nāṃva vāḍhavī

Pativratecī padavī miḷavī

Saṃsārī tuza vāṇa nasāvī

Lakṣmī tū sāzarī

Exalt the names of both families

Earn a husband-bound woman's status

In married life may you have no shortfall

You are gorgeous Lakṣmī
