Not sure why I am answering this seriously. 😆
1. Barbie is one of the very few Hollywood films this summer that target women. No Hard feelings had niche appeal as an R-rated comedy and The Little Mermaid didn't do too well internationally for expected reasons. It is also unabashedly feminine, which the market isn't.
2. The marketing campaign has been out of this world. The film has been marketed from the very first still that came out last year during first few days of shooting. They spent more money on marketing than the film.
3. Barbie is directed and written by Greta Gerwig, who is a fantastic writer, actress, director. A good chunk of the initial goodwill among movie buffs and critics came from her and her husband's involvement.
4. Audience is tired of the long running franchises like Marvel and DC. So new IPs like Mario and Barbie have exploded instead.
5. Barbenheimer meme has successfully framed this as a Boys vs Girls event. But boys have a lot of films targeted to them, so for girls it has sort of become a monoculture event.
