It was the story of Oppenheimer and the creation of the bomb, not Hiroshima . To me, the movie portrayed Americans and particularly president Truman in a very negative light

I won't defend the US or Oppenheimer or the bombings, but US entered the war only after Japanese provocation, read pearl harbour bombings.

The Imperial Japanese Army responsible for one of the most brutal, heinous and gruesome war crime in history, Rape of Nanking. Their killings ranges somewhere between 3 to 30 million or more. Read Asian Holocaust.

By saying this I am not supporting the US or the bombings. The US gave chance to hirohito to surrender, but he didn't care. The Japanese were untamed that time. And US took that aggressive step.

For me that's the both side story. Again War can never be justified. And it's always the civilians who pay price

100%

Speaking selfishly, I would like for America to disengage completely from all its military endeavors outside its borders. Close down the bases, pull back, whatever. Europe has the money and resources to help Ukraine. Let them. Lord knows we could use the billion-plus in our own cities.

But it ain't happening. The military-industrial complex won't let it happen. I wouldn't even put it past them to trigger wars to make a buck from the blood of regular people. At least India fights wars only when necessary.

The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was one of the most cruel atrocities of WWII, almost on par with the holocaust that sparked the war in the first place. Every human on earth needs to try and study the entirety of WWII, from the rise of the third reich to the cold war.

---

However, the movie Oppenheimer is not about WWII or the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is a biopic of the physicist who is considered the father of the atomic bomb. You have to realize that the physicists who set out to make it had no idea how it would be used or how it would impact innocent lives.

When the Manhattan Project started, Germany had made strides in nuclear fission. Many scientists like Oppenheimer were Jews for whom countering the Germans was very personal and essential. Another thing to realize is that Oppenheimer's many relations with known communists and support of socialist ideas also somewhat compelled him to prove his patriotism by undertaking this major project for the USA.

---

I think anyone who sees Oppenheimer as a celebration of the Manhattan Project or sees the film as a classical hero's journey is missing the point.

The movie literally begins with the quote

"Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to man.

For this he was chained to a rock and tortured for eternity."

The movie is based on American Prometheus. Oppenheimer parallels a modern-day Prometheus, who sets out to do something good for mankind. But he doesn't understand the gravity of his actions until it's too late. He spends the rest of his life burdened by his guilt.

I wrote my review of Oppenheimer in the movies thread. Even though the movie does not dive deeply into Hiroshima and Nagasaki - I found the narrative heavily weighed down by the impact of the atom bomb on mankind.

I do think some Nolan fanboys are missing the point of the story.

Ya and most booked tickets just to look cool. Some waited for Hiroshima Nagasaki bombings which wasn't even the point of the movie. People in my theatre were searching Google for Oppenheimer like who is he, what he did etc. One was like open hammer ho gaya ab Bhabhi dekhte hain

I am just saying if you have read Hiroshima before hand the film just hits you more powerfully.

@bold 🤣

At least they got the order right.

Ya. I think many idiots were expecting Hiroshima and Nagasaki devastation shown on IMAX. That's twisted.

I surprisingly learned about Oppenheimer during my MBA. We went through Howard Gardner's "Leading Minds" in our leadership class and Oppenheimer is one of the leaders mentioned there. Very unusual and fascinating as a leader.

I'd say even knowledge of it is sufficient. Just learn some history.

Gojira/Godzilla and the entire Kaiju genre are a metaphor for nuclear warheads. But most people lack the awareness of why and how the genre emerged.

Are you talking about John Hersey's Hiroshima? I have read. It helped me during my project about recuperation after 2nd WW. And it's not only from one country's perspective. It's about all who survived, their mental, physical, economical health. So yes, I can relate
