It's true Rafi ruled the roost for most of the 50s and 60s. Manaadey has himself admitted many a time that he couldn't do what Rafi could. He also said in an interview that he would feel bad whenever Music Directors chose another singer instead of him to sing a song, but if it was Rafi they picked, he would be okay with it. I agree he was mystifyingly considered to be a voice idoneous for songs based on complex raags or encapsulating the moroseness of the situation and that too involving intricate notes! While he had have the moxie of nailing peppy numbers too! I think rafi too played a huge part in this as his singing was simply on a different level and hence was the preferred choice of most of the actors and also MDz..
