I agree he was mystifyingly considered to be a voice idoneous for songs based on complex raags or encapsulating the moroseness of the situation and that too involving intricate notes! While he had have the moxie of nailing peppy numbers too! I think rafi too played a huge part in this as his singing was simply on a different level and hence was the preferred choice of most of the actors and also MDz..

It's true Rafi ruled the roost for most of the 50s and 60s. Manaadey has himself admitted many a time that he couldn't do what Rafi could. He also said in an interview that he would feel bad whenever Music Directors chose another singer instead of him to sing a song, but if it was Rafi they picked, he would be okay with it. And Rafi said - people listen to my songs, but I only listen to Mannada's songs. They had so much love and respect for each other!

Spot on Elizabeth (yay this seems ok😎)

As talented as manna was ,, rafis stature was too gigantic for anyone to reach including the great manna too...to add one like to an already rich collection of anecdotes you have shared- manna said once - rafi saab pe jo khuda ka aashirwad tha, wo humpe nhi tha!

I personally have a different connection with sonu sir and rafi as everyone tell me my voice resembles them...

Lizzie's song of the day

Song: Dekhta chala gaya main zindagi ki raah mein

Film: Gateway of India (1957)

Music: Madan Mohan

Lyrics: Rajinder Kishen

Singers: Rafi & Lata

Actors: Madhubala, Johnny Walker

Why I like this song: It's so fun! Madan Mohan doesn't compose tunes like this usually which makes this one a rare delight. Plus Rajinder Kishen's whacky, but clever lyrics, the way it runs like a conversation. The singing- especially Rafi- you can tell how much he's into it, he's voice acting for Johnny really! ⭐️ And the natural chemistry between Johnny Walker and Madhubala! ⭐️⭐️

The way she goes:

Nazar ko beqaraar kar and rolls her eyes

Then he tries and goes; Nahi hoti 😆

And then she says - Zara kareeb aa mere when he's drunk and almost passed out on the sofa and he goes.. Apna bhi majboor hai, aur tu bohot hee door hai 😆

The guy on the piano is Johnny's rl brother, Tony.

Wonderful, peppy composition, Madan Mohan was so talented. R.D.Burman often overshadowed him, not in talent but in terms of appreciation for the compositions.
