Lizzie's song of the day

Song: Ek baat kahoon mere piya

Film: Amar (1954)

Music: Naushad

Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Singer: Asha Bhosle

Actor: Nimmi

Why I Like this song: It's the sheer rarity of having Asha sing for Naushad apart from the tune itself. It's odd because Lata sings for Madhubala in this movie, and also for Nimmi (Na milta gham) so I wonder what made him give this song to Asha. I'm glad he did though. He did use Asha in the later years (Leader, Dil diya dard liya, Mere Mehboob etc), but it was rare for him to do so in the 50s. Even for female duets he would pick Shanshad with Lata rather than Asha.

Song: Bade armaanon se rakha hai balam

Film: Malhaar (1951)

Music: Roshan

Lyrics: Indeevar

Singers: Lata & Mukesh

Actors: Shammi & Arjun Bakshi

Why I like this song: The lilting melody by Roshan . It feels simple but is actually quite complex. The lyrics by Indeevar are really good too. This entire album is quite good, I would recommend it. My dad owned a cassette tape of it back in the day and I would listen to it on loop.

It's criminal how under-recognized Roshan was then even with musical ability like this! 🤢 It took him years to establish himself until 1960 and Barsaat Ki Raat I'm guessing. The same goes for Indeevar. The popular ones - OPN, Naushad, SJ, SDB dominated the scene so much that these MDs (no less talented) were overlooked. Such a shame. We could have gotten a lot more music out of Roshan! 🤢

Also, this was the first (& only) film produced by Mukesh.

Love this song ā¤ļø And the bold part, I feel that was the case with most of the songs of Mukesh. The incomplex tone of his voice made his songs feel easy, even the high pitched ones, when in reality they were difficult.

He gave voice to anpadh/seedhe saadhe log/innocent types very well and that's why his voice resonates with a common man!

Reminds me of dhoni whose batting style was such that we could relate with him as theres was nothing complicated in his technique..šŸššŸŒļø

Lizzie's song of the day

Song: Humne toh dil ko aapke kadmon pe rakh diya

Film: Mere Sanam (1965)

Music: O.P. Nayyar

Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Singers: Rafi & Asha

Why I like this song: This is quintessential OPN, he does these kinds of songs so well! The tune! Mainly the mukhda.. The first note that Rafi hits with Humne? My heart lurches every time. I can't explain it. Also in the 'ab aap sochiye' part! His voice just drips romance! Also, Asha compliments him so well ā¤ļø. Such a shame we don't have a visual of this song! Why did they decide to delete this song? 🤢It's such a gem!

Lizzie's song of the day

Song: Kaun aaya mere mann ke dwaare

Film: Dekh kabira roya (1957)

Music: Madan Mohan

Lyrics: Rajinder Kishen

Singer: Mannadey

Actor: Anoop Kumar

Why I like this song: The tune and the way Mannada has sung this! āļøāļø The tune by MM just flows like a cascading stream. It's heavily classical influenced (Based on Raag Rageshri) but the feel is of a soft, romantic ballad and Mannada's singing contributes to that feeling. This song is incredibly difficult to sing (Believe me, I've tried) and Mannada does it like a breeze! āļø

The rendering of the antara's first line especially! Hayye!

(My only peeve with this song is they wasted it on Anoop Kumar - no offense to his fans.)

Mannadey was somewhat eclipsed by the goliaths scilicet rafi, kishore etc but his prowess has been established beyond incertitude !

I think the problem for Mannadey was the fallacious perception that his voice was only suited to sombre, or classical-based tunes. Further, none of the A-lister heroes used him as their preferred voice. Hemant Kumar probably suffered a similar fate. He had Dev Anand as his sole failsafe and Mannada had Raj Kapoor however both these heroes preferred Rafi (& then Kishore) & Mukesh respectively.

I say fallacious because have you listened to 'Babu samjho ishaare?' Or the songs from 'Chori Chori'? No way he could only sing solemn tunes! He was woefully under-utilized, in my opinion.

Lizzie's song of the day

Song: Mohabbat turk ki maine

Film: Doraha (1952)

Music: Anil Biswas

Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Singer: Talat Mehmood

Actor: Having never seen this movie or a visual of the song I have no clue, but Doraha stars Shekhar as the ML, so I will assume this is picturized on him.

Why I like this song: I first heard this song on a Anil Biswas compilation tape and liked it then, but recently I read a blog (can't remember where) where the blogger brought up this song in a Sahir Ludhianvi tribute and praised it to high-skies. It made me see it in a new light. I love it. The tune is beautiful, no doubt, but Talat's rendition and Sahir's lyrics are what elevates this song to a masterpiece for me.

Thanks for a trenchant distinction!

I agree he was mystifyingly considered to be a voice idoneous for songs based on complex raags or encapsulating the moroseness of the situation and that too involving intricate notes! While he had have the moxie of nailing peppy numbers too! I think rafi too played a huge part in this as his singing was simply on a different level and hence was the preferred choice of most of the actors and also MDz..
