Honestly, one may not agree with how the different freedom fighters approached the freedom movement but to use such disrespectful words like chaatukar, maafi Savarkar by people who live in a free country enjoying the fruits of people who literally gave their life for this freedom is beyond comprehension.

One is free to disagree but at least where the freedom fighters are concerned whether Veer Savarkar or Gandhi one should try to be a little more mindful of the words used.

Killing and attacking is not something that everyone can relate to. Gandhiji gave the masses a weapon that they can use to participate in the independence struggle in the name of non-violence. Thousands and lakhs of people went out and fought for their independence through non-violence,thanks to him.

After they hanged Godse, his minions went berserk and started systematically destroying Gandhiji’s reputation. But alas, it’s been 75 years but they achieved zilch towards their unholy mission. Today Gandhiji is not just an icon to the Indians but also to the rest of the world. Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Einstein and many more drew their inspiration from him.

As to letters written by Veer Savarkar; why should he not write a letter asking for forgiveness to get out of jail? There is nothing he could've contributed to his country while in jail.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the letter. Very smart and shrewd instead of pretending to be a saint and die in jail he chose to write a petition to get out.

I guess people living a free, luxurious life are unable to fathom what it might been like in the Andaman jail.

@bold - exactly! It was a good move. Instead of wasting his life in jail, he swallowed his ego, asked for forgiveness and then again started his work covertly.

P.s..i read that even their clothes were made of jute so that it irritated and scratched the skin wet by sweat.

If you visit the Cellular Jails at Port Blair..you will know how horrifying that jail was..Kala Paani ki saza indeed..and even Maharana Pratap escaped from the battlefield and indulged in guerilla tactics..to capture back Mewar..fighting till last man standing isn’t prudent always. And Gandhijee did nothing to save our revolutionaries..Bhagat Singh’s death should have been an eye opener but it isn’t unfortunately..not even today.

He could not have, though he tried. For one, the obvious one,he wasn’t the one running the business. And two, it clashes with what he was preaching to the masses and he wouldn’t have known how to explain his double standards by standing up for those who supposedly used violence.
