Heart To Heart With Fairy Tale Writer Sarah MajeedShazia Saqib Habib by Shazia Saqib Habib

April 18, 2023

Sarah Majeed, Fairy Tale

Fairy Tale is the Ramazan Drama that caught viewers by surprise. Not only did audiences land themselves a new onscreen couple but Pakistanis welcomed Urdu comedy back into mainstream TV dramas. And that’s not us talking, but the feedback that Sarah Majeed, writer, Fairy Tale had to tell us. Settle in with a cup of chai and listen to the mind that penned the story we’re all hanging onto, every evening!

Sarah Majeed, Fairy Tale,Fairy Tale Writer Sarah Majeed

As the final episodes close in, we wonder when we get the romance going for the onscreen couple that’s taking over our dreams, that too, in broad daylight. It turns out Sarah Majeed had embarked on the Fairy Tale saga quite some years ago, but returned to it just a few months prior to as we write as it was commissioned for a Ramazan showing. So, to tell it straight, Umeed and Tara have been lurking in the shadows well before ahem, some of us got on to watching dramas. The rest, as you know, is history in the making.

So, without holding you back and without any further ado, we asked our writer to give us some BTS moments from the drama as she had imagined it on paper. And here goes!

The inspiration for the story came from?

Sarah Majeed, Fairy Tale writer,Fairy Tale Writer Sarah Majeed

“Definitely, from fairy tales.” Responded Sarah without missing a beat.

There was only one point, how would it be if a fairy tale were written in today’s era. In today’s era, you can’t find any miracle or magic lamp that can change someone’s life at once, then think about what could happen? The game show idea came up as a possibility that fit in with the fairy tale theme.

Umeed’s character. Anyone you know. And did you fear it would become too far fetched and exaggerated?

Sarah responded like a creator who wanted a story to be told, with courage, believing in the character that had taken flight in her mind. She didn’t want to constrain it in any way, and lo and behold, we were gifted Umeed Pasha!

“Just this time I wanted to write a heroine who makes mistakes and has a lot of personality flaws, in stark contrast to our image of the smart, wise, truth-telling, all-caring, perfect heroine, as we all have in our personality. There was a fear that people might not accept, but I wanted to write it, so I wrote.”

Sarah Majeed, writer Fairy Tale

Here I will quote Jane Austen, continued Sarah. She wrote about Emma, “I’m going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.” So I love Umeed with all her flaws, mistakes, imperfections and want you to love her and accept her the way she is. And the good thing is that people are loving Umeed despite all her little flaws and this acceptance is what I wanted.

Yeah, and you got it Sarah, and we’re delighted wit the depiction!

Writing comedy can be very difficult in a day and age when everything is called out… did you worry about that? E.g. Leaving Aago Jan alone was quite risky. Did you feel a responsibility ya comedy mein sab chalta hai?

I agree there should be a fine line between humor and offensive humor. And this is always in my mind while writing and I have tried not to write forced comedy. Umeed had seated her in the car responsibly and instructed the driver to look after her. Now here Ago Jan herself dodged the driver and got out of there and this situation was created automatically because of Ago Jan’s personality trait, because this is the mood in which I have penned Ago Jan’s character.

Do you feel the fun factor is compromised when we become so responsible? And where did that happen in the script?

Not at all. Then we should take care of the fact that it is a fine line, as it is a rom-com, we can see a lot of unexpected and silly things in it, but at the same time, it is important to be a little responsible. If Umeed had acted wrongly, she feels it instantly too, on the spot. I have not shown anyone abusing or making fun of anyone, I have written humor keeping in view the respect to elders and the beautiful bonding of all relationships.

Will Umeed have a journey? We can see Farjad having one.

Yes, of course Umeed will learn with the passage of time. But I don’t want to completely change Umeed or Farjad. But both of them must understand that excess of anything is harmful. A little balance is necessary in life.

The chai coffee debate. Kahan se socha?

Hai, there are many stories behind it. All the people who are close to me in my life are likewise when it comes to tea. My dad, my sister and my hubby are all very fond of tea. I have made a lot of tea in my life. Especially my sister, she is just another Umeed, silly, talkative and tea lover. And the story of coffee is that I was a coffee lover and my husband was a tea lover. And now I’ve switched from coffee to tea.

Was the drama executed the way you had imagined. A scene that you loved the most, or even better than you had imagined?

I love the execution, direction and production … everything. My favourite scene: When they both met in the car for the first time. The game show was a very difficult task to execute but it was done beautifully too.

You write every scene in detail? Eg ubtan scene. Did you write it like that or it was improvised?

Yes, it was written the same way. I write each scene with a lot of details, I highlight minor details and my imagination is very strong. I imagine the entire scene in my head when I pen it down and the best thing is, that it came out exactly the way I had conceived it, in fact:

“mazey ki baat yeh hai, ke Sehar and Hamza ne usko char chaand laga diya“

Sarah Majeed on the ubtan scene in Fairy Tale

Happy with the casting?

“No, I didn’t have anyone in mind when I started writing. But when I was told about Sahar and Hamza, I was completely satisfied.” Responded the writer – a dream come true for any one who wants to see their vision on screen, conveyed as and how they had imagined!

Does Ago Jan have dementia?

Aago is affected by Alzheimer’s disease. It is the most common type of dementia. It is a progressive disease beginning with mild memory loss and possibly leading to loss of the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to the environment. This is my own created character yes Ago Jan’s name and some habits are taken from one of my family members.

Haya-Umeed relationship is so loving but when will Umeed be less selfish. Is she selfish. Will she think of others around her too? E.g. Haya

Umeed is certainly careless but not selfish, she would have saved Haya.

Sarah Majeed on Fairy Tale

Here the fault lies with Haya because Umeed has complete faith in Haya that she is not hiding anything from her. But Haya is not sharing anything with Umeed in Umeed’s love, because if Haya had shared with her, then Umeed is certainly careless but not selfish, she would have saved Haya. But whatever is happening here is happening in Umeed’s ignorance.

The writer defends her heroine as all writers should. We feel for Haya though, much as we love Umeed.

Sameer kab kuch bolega?

Then Pasha Sahib’s harshness and his mother’s death have made Sameer a coward and Umeed overconfident.

Sarah Majeed on Sameer in Fairy Tale

Samir is not in a position to speak and be heard, for one he has come to Pakistan from Canada leaving his education incomplete and then, he’s running away from education here too. He’s not independent yet. That way his say won’t matter in the house, and he knows it. Then Pasha Sahib’s harshness and his mother’s death have made Sameer a coward and Umeed overconfident.

That background was certainly necessary and so very sensitive – how siblings develop different from each other and how our childhood and circumstances shape the people we become. We would relent and request that a flashback or more insight into Sameer’s character would have helped us understand the finer sensitivities as mentioned by the writer here.

Farjad as angry young man is a dated concept but doing really well. We feel the Haseena Moin vibes in your hero-heroine. Any inspiration from there?

Ah Haseena Moin! Her plays have been very close to my heart. Maybe that’s why you might get a glimpse of her in my script.

People have criticised that the comedy has no message. Do you agree? Is Fairy Tale handing out a message?

Fairy TaleFarjad x Hamza Sohail

No matter what the story is, whether it’s a comedy or a tragedy, it always has a lesson for someone. Here also through hope, we have to learn that there is nothing to be gained by short cuts, maybe there will be some benefit in the short term but not in the long term. And now Umeed is only hurting herself, but hopefully, she will learn that hard work is everything and that success lasts forever.

On the script.

I signed the contract with MD Productions four years ago, started writing the script for the 8 o’clock slot and then after 5-6 episodes I stopped it due to some personal reasons. Now 5 months ago it was decided that we will do it for Ramazan, then I was writing for 5 months, and I wrote it not in isolation at all, but a bit more while practically everywhere, because in these six months I travelled to Nepal, Islamabad, Lahore, stayed in Karachi, Australia and just carried the laptop with me everywhere.

The Best dialogue?

Tumhe Kisi Cheez ki Kami Hai? Umeed: Yehi Koi Ek, Do Crore Ki

The Best scene or moment.

Pool scene and elevator scene were by far the best for me!

If Umeed is so confident and headstrong why can’t she go ahead and propose to Farjad once she feels she likes him?

Fairy TaleUmeed x Sehar Khan

“The day Umeed thinks that Farjad is the best for her, then she is not going to wait for anyone again … But when that happens remains to be seen.”

Sarah Majeed, writer Fairy Tale

“Now I can see that you have fully understood Umeed.” Quips the writer instantly. “The day Umeed thinks that Farjad is the best for her, then she is not going to wait for anyone again. She is not that kind of girl. But when that happens remains to be seen.”

Best feedback you’ve received so far?

The best feedback was that my script has a glimpse of Haseena Moeen’s stories, and I got this feedback first in FUCHSIA’s article and then many other YouTubers and blogs said the same in drama reviews.

haseena moin, dhoop kinaray, henna, ankahi, tanhaaiyaan, poet, playwright, writerThe late Haseena Moin, dramatist, playwright and more!

“I know very well that my writing is nothing, but this feedback was a source of happiness for me.” Responded Sarah humbly.

People gave me feedback that Urdu humour has been missing from the TV screen, khas kar ke Karachi wale isko buhat miss karte thay. Urdu Comedy likhne wale ikka dukka reh gaye hain.

Sarah Majeed on Fairy Tale audience feedback

And secondly, this kind of humor in Urdu was absent from the TV screen for a long time, especially the people of Karachi used to miss it a lot because, Masha Allah, a lot of work is being done in Punjabi humor and good work is being done, but Urdu humor writers are now few and far between.

And the fun feedback was that “the dialogues are up to date”.

And that’s it from our heart to heart with Sarah Majeed – writer, Fairy Tale. So keep sipping your chai or coffee, whatever you love in Ramazan and do watch the final run up to Farjad and Umeed’s story. Is there hope for A.K. Khan yet and will Haya and Samir get a happy ending?
