25 year ago movie.
Firstly, Kajol has a right to voice her opinion. She is allowed to think differently to the character of Anjali.
Her opinion on her choosing Aman over Rahul plays no relevant significance in terms of whom she is married to in real life. It is not like her situation was the same with Ajay in real life as Angalis in the movie. Whatever fireworks happened for them, worked.. They are a happy family of four.
25 years is a long time. Times have changed. When this movie released, Karan Johar expressed his inspiration came from Dawsons creek. Where Dawson's best friend Joey was in love with him and he fell for the new girl Jane. After KKHH was released and old. The show Dawsons Creek showed Joey settling for sometime else at the end. Karan, puri picture tho dekh lete.. lol.
That was an era of candy floss films where tomboy best friends fell for their male friends and he falling for something in a skirt. Created bitter sweet, butterflies in your tummy drama.
We were all a bugger for them. Watching how the emotions and dynamics change and how the male lead will fall for her.
__________
Regarding KKHH, for the timeline it was set in I don't believe that it would have even crossed peoples mind that this movie will one day be regarded as sexist. A little objectifying in terms of ideology then yes in certain parts. But those ideologies back then were mostly the norm.
For decades Women had dresscodes and so did men, all over the world.
Without getting into the whole gender is a choice argument. I see mostly there being 2 genders. Biological man and biological woman. Normally most socially and sexually associate with the gender affirmed at birth. Cannot believe I'm explaining this.
How and why was it wrong for Rahul to be not attracted to Anjali whilst she was being gender neutral. Don't call me a girl.
A little over tomboy..Tomboys still think of themselves within the birth gender group.
A he had every right not to feel attracted to her by physical appearance and as far as he was concerned she was acting practically gender neutral.
He fell in love with whom he found attractive, whom he connected with on a romantic level. A relationship he was serious about and had she not died.. Anjali had no letters. Rahul would never have thought of Anjali. Ouch! That part hurts.
Aman, realistically Aman should have walked off from Anjali a long time ago
But he waited for her. He was just an object to create jealousy in Rahul which otherwise would not have been ignited.
So when finally they finally meet, so much changed between them that they forgot their little nose touch move. He's all suited and she's in a saree.
So she's finally come to terms with her gender identity. A lot of people do. She broke away from things which tied her to Rahul such as basketball.
Now this whole think girls don't play basketball.. that was sexist. She wore a saree, she wore makeup u didn't have to drill in this ideology to make audiences believe by losing her basketball skillset she is now a woman in it's true form.
Regarding Rahul eyeballing her with her pallu sarkajaye. Well that was to show the audience his attraction towards her. Like a long look in the eyes could not have shown that emotion. As a man he he felt attracted to her in a feminine get up is not an issue. However she was someone whom he knew, and people would have preferred him to fall in love with the person rather than her physical appearance. But did he even know her as the person she had become. Its was still a shock to his system. There had been a 10 year gap.
But either way it cannot be condemmed for him to fall in love with her physical appearance as well. Again this movie is from that era when the girl becomes all that, then the guy falls for her.
_____________
Aman or Rahul?
The boy that loved her too much or the boy who never loved her. (Though, the movies concept was.. Anjali was his true love but he hasn't realised it. Courtesy of that knowledge came from Tinas letters).
Rahul married someone, and she dies and he is shown to fall in love again, or the person whom he was supposed to love all the while instead of Tina.
If he could fall in love with 2 people. Then why couldn't Anjali? Why is the audience against this concept.
It would have been interesting to see Rahul fall in love with Anjali and her falling in love with Aman, and realiss that Rahul was a childish puppy love.
The man that deserved her was Aman. She would have been better dignified.
However the script was that against all odds her manifestation materialised and she ended up with Rahul and could not love another.
We as the audience wanted this back in that era.
Today, I think I would have preferred a twist and for to be with Aman. Rahul had made his choice. So for the final time she would have said 'Bye Rahul'.
Why be his second choice when she was Amans first choice? If Aman waited for her for this long then, naturally he could have won her over with his love.
And Anjali had walked off to the sunset to let Rahul and Tina get on with their lives, yet was in love with Tinas husband for so many years? The audience didn't find that wrong?
She claimed that she has already loved in her life..no darling it was one sided obsession.
Only later u fell both fell in love with each other. At this point, the story finished on Rahul gets Anjali. Because Aman should be dignified and not be a second choice for Anjali.
So Rahul plus Anjali equals Aman keeping his dignity.
So I guess the movie concluded at the time, depending on it's script correctly.
I hear, till date Aman is still footlose and fancy free.
___________
So whilst you all are trying to conclude Rahul or Aman the bigger question to ask is;
Why did Tina think that 8 years down the line Anjali will be available and still interested in Rahul?
For me that is the biggest flow in the script.
Thank you
