Criticism - boon or bane

It must be taxing for actors(or any professional for that matter)to face criticism. And unless taken in stride it could end up making or breaking one’s career. Taking a lesson from it and working on oneself to make a positive change would be the ideal way forwards but is it as easy as we think? How far should one go to defend themselves or their characters and still be humble in their approach.

I know this topic isnt suited to go here but if we were to take the reference of Gaurav’s recent insta live it would be relevant?😳

p.s: no personal attacks on actors please, criticism is welcome😉

A leading actress mentioned how her portrayal of a negative character on a leading show drew so much negative press which deeply impacted her mental health and she requested the Production House to make amends and the role was modified thereon.

Actors are not immune to what is spoken of even if it is for the character alone.

Here is my unpopular notion and apologies in advance.

I am sure every actor knows, is sensitive to what is shown.

Not just actors, I am sure even writers, directors, crew in general, are aware.

They may themselves be, critical of it in private but are bound by obligations.

As long as whatever is shown grabs TRPs, the same crap will be churned out.

@bold: I think it depends on one's own conscience and perspective. Many teenagers follow actors nowadays and they copy them and justify every single thing they do onscreen or offscreen. Wven if the actor is playing a toxic role, these people justify and consider the characters they play as their role model. Its sad to see innocent young minds thinking having an affair is ok or hailing a toxic relationship. I know it's the writers who write such unhealthy plots but it's the actors who portray them and it's them who draw the Fandom towards the show.

Personally, I feel if you are not convinced on playing a role whatever it maybe then better not defend the role you play. Agree, its your job but atleast if the role isn't defended by the actors, maybe a part of the Fandom will see it as a character and not as their role model. Suppose an actor instead of defending his/her character maybe gives an interview and says that this is not how he/she would behave in real life and he/she wouldn't want to be associated with such toxic people and he/she is playing a role in the story which is totally fictitious then it would honestly help a lot of young minds to understand the reality.

But for the above to happen the actor/actress need to know what exactly is the story. Atleast they must know the entire story of the track before each track commences. This way the actor/actress would actually know how their characters are being portrayed. Plus the actors really need to watch their own show. I am sure none of them do. The way its presented and edited should be known to the actor. Here in itv they get scripts on a daily basis and do whatever they want. A dialogue 'Are you mad?' Would make sense if it's said to a lover who is angry and throwing things randomly all of a sudden but it is completely ridiculous if said to a man suffering from depression and on the verge of breakdown. So just acting scene by scene on a daily basis could make the actors oblivious to what they are presenting. It would be better if they have finite shows with well defined characters.

If they do see the show and do know what's happening and still choose to defend everything because it's their job.... well... I don't have anything else to say... It's their personal conviction and belief.

I hope I made some sense in my rambling.

I agree with a lot of your points. Take the example of the guy playing toshu - when the track where anupama moved out of SH for the first time, gave an interview clarifying that the character's actions (of character assasination) were wrong, etc. That was given the due appreciation.
