I thought so too, but then I wondered why it didn't work for LSC?

I guess it's a mix of factors. Audience were excited for this, and the protests inadvertently ended up adding to that excitement.

Because negativity against Aamir and Kareena was too much. SRK has not made as open and harsh statements against Modi and BJP or intolerance as Aamir has. His old interviews calling Modi a mass murderer post 2002 riots was also viral besides that leave India comment.

Also, Kareena's toh mat dekho na, no one is forcing you, edited clip, was made viral and used against the film.

Secondly, team Pathaan did best thing by avoiding promotions or interviews and gave no clarifications and kept low profile, kept Deepika away from promotions too. SRK also avoided interviews or press confs.

Aamir made mistake of giving clarifications about his old statements and apologising. That was taking the bait.

Aamir also had additional negativity against him due to his second divorce and his crying about not giving time to family.

LSC was also a dull, sad, depressing film and slow, choppy compared to a usual Aamir film. A poor adaptation and remake. Not entertaining or escapist fare like Pathaan.

Pathaan is an action film with glamour and has theme of patriotism, released on R Day weekend. So good for them.

Deepika's glam avatar, cameo by Salman, SRK's body display only help the film get more eyeballs. I bet if it was another rom com or family drama or historical or biopic or period film or message film by SRK then it would fail.

Audience wants paisa vasool escapism.

Staying lowkey helped Pathaan. Aamir should also go underground and not speak much. Give some entertaining film in future. So should others like Salman, Akshay, HR. Ajay is doing well with Drishyam series for eg.
