Genre doesn't really determine the event nature of a film. A film could be a love story and still be an event film. But slice of life dramas just generally don't have that kind of appeal to drag people into theaters. Even in Hollywood, Rom-Coms are dead on arrival in theatres.

Problem with Karan is he doesn't really believe anything he says. He just repeats popular talking points to appear smart.

Love Today was very much slice of life and made with unknowns. It became a huge hit. Thrillers don't generally become blockbusters, but Drishyam 2 did. Kerala is famous for kneecapping event movies and making small films hits. Kashmir Files didn't release as an event movie; the audience made it one.

Films have at least a chance of working if they're done well. Karan and most of Bollywood have no idea how to make good movies. He's trying to find trends which work.

Was Love Today a hit with Bollywood audiences? Is KJo making films for Kerala? Japanese and French audiences also famously turn on your standard American blockbusters. But I don't think that's how American studios decide how to finance films.

Sure some small films break. No one is saying small films can not make money and big films must make money. It's a conditional probability, and it's just higher for big films, especially post COVID.

Karan may not have a good sense for picking films, doesn't make his point invalid.

Prithviraj, Shamshera, LSC were all event films and flopped.

Drishyam 2, Bhool Bhulaiyya were not event films. Kantara succeeded with BW audience. Kashmir Files also worked.

Brahmastra and RRR were event films. That Brahmastra didn't recover its costs is another fact.

Karan has no point.

Make entertaining films, and audience is more likely to show up. He doesn't know how to.

What are event films?🤔

I'm thinking about this too. Movie where an event happens? Which event? Many events happen in a movie. Or is it one big event in a movie. Or do they mean event outside of the movie like it's an event for a family if they go watch it?

Ek movie jo dekhne jana hi ek event hai. Like pura family... saare friends ek achche din ko mil kar ticket khareed ke woh movie dekhne jaate hai.. aur uske baad khana peena koi restaurant pe/food court pe.

I don't like Marvel movies or Bond movies, but I would go to enjoy the time with my family and friends.

And sequels/franchises/reboots are not the same as original films. It's an obvious market trend that's highlighted by most professional trade magazines globally. Streaming has killed theatrical viewership for things like medium budget star vehicles, rom-coms and small films. I am not sure why your personal classification system invalidates it.

I don't get the appeal of arguing for arguing's sake. Goodbye.

KJO also seems to be very insecure about the whole influx of ott and other outsiders in the movie business

When asked about how outsiders can start production houses and make money, he was like insiders know better and they should work with an insider. Bollywood has become all about style and glamour and except very rich urban folk nobody cares

Insiders of Bollywood only look at south Bombay and feel this is the world. Classic example, remake of Vikram Vedha, they could not get the aesthetic or lingo right.

Compare it to a Drishyam of thriller but where all characters were not glamourized, though big stars, Ajay, Akshay and Tabu managed to look their parts.

Everybody just wants entertainment

That age of a few producers holding up films is gone.

We need disruptors in a big way to make the movie business. A level playing field would help.

OTT has certainly helped but mostly still in urban.

Look at Hombale films. They backed KGF and Kantara and most of the technical crew were outsiders from small towns.
