Is Bollywood glorifying toxicity?

The Shraddha case really makes me think.

Has media, films glorified too much toxicity?

Films like Kabir Singh show woman still in love with violent, abusive, druggie, hyper, possessive man who has no control over himself.

Do films brainwash young girls to see abuse as sign of love or hope her love will change the man for good someday?

Do films also give message to young men to be abusive or blackmail girls emotionally or play around with several girls and still be some cool hero? Or use abuse as way to control and tame the woman they like?

The killer Aftab in this case cited American TV series Dexter as his inspiration in disposing off the body, which makes me wonder if films and shows have desensitised us to violence and gore and give ideas to potential killers or anyone who is angry or jilted or takes things too personally?

I have seen how people love violent characters or often love villains or aggressive characters more than quiet ones (like Geeta character is admired more than Seeta in Seeta Aur Geeta and Amitabh in Deewar was admired more than Shashi). I do feel films and TV sort of glorify heightened expression of emotion and promote aggression.

What do you feel? Should filmmakers be more cautious of content they show? And its impact on masses? Instead of being in denial and showing anything in name of creative freedom?

Google 'Shraddha Walker' murder case or the killer 'Aftab Poonawala'.

Brutal murder of a woman by her live in partner who was violent and abusive towards her for a long period and isolated her from her friends and family. Later chopped her body into 35 pieces, kept them in fridge at home and slowly dumped each piece in forests around Delhi outskirts and also kept sleeping around with more girls through dating apps while body of live in partner was still in his fridge and he admitted he was inspired by internet, TV shows and films to dispose off the body and hide crime.

Well there's certainly this type of men who are being drooled upon. U know... the silent dark brooding types who are intense, mysterious and dangerous and with anger issues too at times. U see a lot of serials and movie characters glorifying such men. And such men are almost always shown as hard outside soft inside, instead of the destructive influence they actually are..

But i guess they are all an extension of mr. Darcy on steroids.

I was with you until you mentioned Geeta

Don't think Hema's Geeta or Amitabh's Deewar are the right ex here

They are not psychopaths or evil or even sociopaths esp Geeta

They are not psychopaths but they are violent. Geeta beats up that chachi and kicks her.

Core issue is media making it look like violence and aggression are only ways to be self assertive or 'heroic' and violence is necessary or one who is not violent is submissive or failed or prone to exploitation.

I know some girl who began kicking and beating own parents after watching films like Chaalbaaz and Seeta Aur Geeta and began to see self as someone who needed to fight against adult authority, saw even scolding by parents or beating by parents as some evil act as chachi in that film. So I know where I am coming from.

The core issue is films, tv shows, cartoons etc all glorifying aggression and violence as the only acceptable means to deal with things. Most prominent characters aka hero and villain are violent and aggressive. Others are supporting or forgettable type.

That, IMO, does make kids think aggression is necessary or a sign of power.

Aftab type men use aggression and violence to tame the woman. Domestic violence is in every household. In some cases it reaches psychopathic and murderous proportions like this one.

Even teachers think beating kids is necessary or else kids get spoilt and dislike validating kids. Nowadays concept of gentle parenting and counselling are also mocked and people say beating up kids from young age is best.

My core issue being, society glorifying violence as sign of power, love, discipline or control or assertion and sign of being leader, authority or in control. This makes people think being violent or having anger issues is probably good. Men especially are encouraged to be aggressive and are called chad or alpha if they are violent, feared, aggressive, keep women and others in 'place'.

This is what I was trying to come at. Books and serials seem to be giving wrong ideas to girls that aggressive man is probably some hero or will change someday through love and patience, tolerance, innocence of the girl.

Lot of novels and fan fiction are giving wrong ideas to women and probably brainwashing them to accept abusive behaviour as sign of love or giving ideas to young men that girls find such men heroic or masculine and dislike 'nice guys'.

Darcy's fault was he was prejudiced against the lower classes. Not that he was hard on the outside. He was silent but shown as gentle with his family and friends.

He never treated Liz badly like TV heros. What he did was advise his friend against marrying Jane because he felt the family was uncultured and loud and was after friend's money. And his proposal to Liz was more like *you're uncouth, and I must be crazy, but will you marry me?*

For that, Darcy had grovel a couple of times before Liz would accept him.
