Bhai Dooj is also known as Bhai Teeka (Nepal), Bhai Phonta (West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh), Bhaiya Dooj (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar), Bhau Beej (Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka), Bhai Jiuitiya (Odisha), and Bhathru Dwithiya (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana).
In Haryana and Maharashtra, those who don't have a brother or whose brother lives far away from them, pray and perform aarti for the moon. This is the reason why the children of Hindu parents affectionately call the moon Chandamama.
According to some traditional tales, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra on the day after liquidating the demon Narakasura. Subhadra welcomed him by donning a tilak on his forehead. This day is thus called Bhai Dooj.
This day is also known as Yama Dwitheya, to celebrate a legendary meeting between Yama, the god of Death, and his sister the Yamuna, the famous river on Dwitheya, the second day after the new moon.
