True beauty is the kind that doesn't need enhancements — be it of the labial, posterior or anterior kind.

That's the message that People magazine sent out when it chose to put Kate Hudson on the cover of its 100 Most Beautiful People issue. "We've gotten so accustomed to celebrities getting breast implants and nose jobs, and she (Hudson) will talk about being flat-chested and having a little bit of an off-beat look," said People senior editor Galina Espinoza.

With B-Town being all about glam, glitter and greasepaint, is there anyone who could fit the no-fuss, no-frills bill? There are plenty, say those in the fashion industry. Celeb photographer Daboo Ratnani says lots of Indian actresses can easily go without make-up. "Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Madhuri Dixit Nene can come for a shoot just after they've woken up and still look stunning," he says.

Fashion choreographer Sharmila Khanna agrees with Daboo's choice of Deepika and adds Rhea Pillai to the list. "Deepika can go out with very minimal make-up and Rhea has that clean and clear look that never goes out of fashion," she says. Model coordinator Nayanika Chatterjee says that natural beauty goes beyond just being able to look great sans make-up. "There are people who, whether you look at them with or without make-up, have something so characteristic and beautiful about them. Beauty is what they are; they can't escape it," she says. Her votes go to Indrani Dasgupta and Nafisa Ali.

Make-up artiste Corey Walia adds "attitude, a sparkling smile and twinkling eyes" to the list and says that Preity Zinta has all of that. "Even though some may say she's lost the freshness she had when she entered the industry, she still has the 'it' factor. So does Shobhaa De. She's 60 and still there's not much a make-up artiste or a cosmetologist needs to do with her," he says. Corey adds that even though Lara Dutta is glammed up a lot of the time, she fits into the natural category. "I'm doing her look for Billoo Barber and I'm not allowed to do anything with her other than use kajal and lip balm. Her hair is in a plait and she has a sindoor in her parting, she's wearing a cotton saree, and it's 40 degrees — but she's still glowing!"

And what does au naturale constitute for men? Corey says it's being "good-looking in a no-need-to-accessorise kind of way". His pick is Hrithik Roshan, "because even when he's not bronzed like he was in Dhoom or has his hair fully coloured, he looks great."
