A cursory glance at television serials still shows angry mothers-in-law, weeping daughters-in-law, women carrying out the household chores decked in blingy outfits, and bedecked in jewelry; there are very few working women, and an overdose of the scheming vamps. Yes, a certain level of suspension of disbelief is expected from entertainment programs. After all, we have plenty of Indian and international shows featuring ghosts and vampires! But, when female characters are consistently stereotyped as ‘timid, obedient = good’ and ‘assertive, questioning = bad’, it does add to the innate sexism and patriarchal notions already embedded in the mindset of the masses.Originally posted by: ranijain
If supreme court is really concerned about quality of mass entertainment, they should look at the ITV content aired in STAR PLUS, Colors, Zee during primetime.
It is filled with Bigamy, Adultery, domestic abuse and violence, ill treatment and insult of women.
This is plain hypocrisy. No one is forcing youth to subscribe and watch A content shows in Netflix, HBO, VOOT or ALT BAlaji. Her shows in ALTBalaji are not free to watch. Someone needs to pay money and subscribe to watch it.
The quality of the TV programs have shown a curious downward spiral over the years. Take the case of Udaan, which was telecast in 1989, and told the story of a female IPS officer. The protagonist was empowered, gritty, and inspiring.
Compare that to the recent aspiring IPS officer Sandhya on Diya aur Baati Hum. She spends the first 100 to 200 episodes in a saree with a pallu over her head, cringing at criticism from her mother-in-law, and trying to please her by learning to cook and clean. After ages, she does manage to convince her family and become a police officer, but it is difficult to view her character as empowered?!!
The problem is ppl like us dont have anything fo watch. I wish those days should come back when atleast weekends were filled with interesting shows. Even 5 PM to 8 PM was something that were filled with shows like tu tu main main, hum panch, haathim , family number 1, just mohabbat, Disney aladdin series.
These type of shows have left the planet and we are only left with these creepy shows. Ott shows i feel its released in ott because they have some steamy conentent which we can not run on tv. Only few shows and movies runs without such scenes. Those are really rare now a days. I wish i can go back to 2000's to find these shows. 😔
Very true. Agree with you. Longing to see a meaningful serial since long time.Originally posted by: firewings_diya

Portrayal of women in Indian TV serials has drawn immense flak for glorifying and normalising oppression. Recently, popular television actresses like Erica Fernandes and Divyanka Tripathi have also raised concerns about women being portrayed as submissive and helpless, and have even refused to play such roles on screen.👏👏
And now, Archana Puran Singh—who’s been a part of shows like Shrimaan Shrimati and Mr Ya Mrs—has also voiced her concern over regressive TV serials and how it has gotten worse since the 80s!
In one of her interviews, she said--
“TV shows are just getting regressive every day. When I did a show Mr Ya Mrs in the late 80s, women were shown to step out, work and earn for the family, and the husband had a role of looking after house jobs. I am not saying that it should be a practice but it was a progressive show, which talked about role reversals. Can we show anything close to that now?”
“Currently, TV shows portray how the woman is always crying, touching people's feet, and always sacrificing her needs and wants before others. It is a women-centric medium and shows revolve around women, but they are playing characters which are not progressive. We need a big change in the content and the way women are portrayed on television,” she added.
Unfortunately, things are no different in the regional television industry. Popular Tollywood actress Koneenica Banerjee who is currently playing the titular role in Aaye Tobe Sohochori was asked about the dominance of multiple marriages, adultery, and conspiracies shown in the daily soaps.
Kneenica said, “Viewers should change first. My question is why do they watch such regressive content and add to its TRPs? Once they stop watching such shows, we will be relieved. We won’t have to show such things. When I started the show, it had such a beautiful story. It narrates the story of a middle-aged woman who wants to study again. The channel and producer are still trying to concentrate on good content but whenever we show Sohochori trying hard to continue her study or such things, the TRP drops. Unfortunately, people love seeing others being tortured.” ---
Indian Television has become infamous for showcasing extremely regressive content through the daily serials. While many would agree that the Doordarshan days showcased serials that were witty or way ahead of their times, the content deteriorated over time. With the advent of saas- bahu saga, the situation worsened.
