I watched this movie for Salman. I was a teenager when I watched this and he was totally the selling factor for me. Madhuri dances great and I definitely watched her more in the songs. I found her acting at the beginning of the movie so annoying. Can’t blame her, it was the script. They loved making the girls act so juvenile back then. I was a teen at the time and I felt I was so much more mature than her. The scenes of her rollerskating in, helping the accountant and then getting excited to receive chocolate as her reward were just plain weird to me. She looked too mature to play that part to me. And don’t even get me started on the chocolate, lime juice song….why is a grown woman just phasing out of the playing with dolls, getting excited about candy stage?

In the movie her age was late teens transitioning into 20 while her sister was just about 21 and Salman was about 21-22 who just graduated from college.All of them, including the big brother, were really young characters in the movie newly settling down in various new roles of their lives. Both Nisha and Prem were shown as the kids of their respective families getting pampered ,spoilt and what not, which is completely natural and believable because I think most of us have that one grown up younger sibling who is treated as a kid all their lives.

I never said Salman was nothing at that time. Salman is the only actor to debut with an ATBB in history of Indian cinema. I just said MD was bigger star compared to him back then as she was more senior ans working with Khans benefitted her too or else she was ageing on screen working with older lot like Anil and Sanjay or Jackie.

The nuance is lost on you because you think I am bashing or undermining Salman the way most people think Salman was nobody when HAHK was made. But this is not what I have implied in any post.

Anyway real credit goes to Barjatya for making a clean family film in era of vulgar films which brought family audiences in droves to theatres. He also helped clean image of Madhuri who got flak for vulgar numbers like Choli ke peeche kya hai till 1993.

Salman was upcoming and one of most handsome, well loved youth icons of that time and serious threat to Anils, Jackies, Sanjays etc. Where have I denied his stardom or hits like MPK, Patthar ke Phool, Love, Sanam Bewafa, Saajan etc?

Definitely Madhuri, she was like one of those actresses that had that package, great dance skills, sex appeal, box office draw and critical acclaim.

Not mention by the time she starred in HAHK, she was paid Rs. 25 million, an unprecended figure at that point, and it was over 3 times what the next paid actress was earning, which would be like an actress earning Rs. 75 crores today, since the highest paid commands Rs. 25 crores.

How is this even a question? Madhuri of course. No other actress would have been able to pull off the almost non-existent script (not to mention dancing and emoting) and create such a memorable character. She made that film work.

Its their chemistry

They were not Salman-Madhuri. They were Prem-Nisha,their chemistry what made the film a huge BB of the history of indian cinema with beautiful heart melting songs enhancing their chemistry even more

How difficult is it to credit both of them?

I credit the snow white Tuffy for the success. And for reuniting lovers. Otherwise hero and heroine had no guts to say anything to each other or families. 🤣

The movie was about Nisha and Prem, so both actors deserve equal praise. Many only want to credit Maduri but without Salman HAHK would not be the same.
