Posting some songs for friends and others I met during the contest who encouraged me. From a couple of different occasions the last 2 months:

Woh shaam kucch ajeeb thi- from a new group I joined 2 months ago. The recording leaves a lot to be desired (it gets a bit better after the initial start) but still- it is slowlydrifting's request

The guy shouting encouragement is the host. He grew up around Kishore da, RD Burman and Rajesh Khanna and is a die-hard fan of these three. He is friends with Amit Kumar, Sourav Ganguli etc. His hallway is adorned with pictures of him with old celebrities. Very rare pictures. It was the first time I had gone to his house and I picked a classic to try to impress him.

Diwana leke aaya hai- on Kishore da's bday

Roop tera mastana- on Kishore da's bday- tried a slight variation some places, should have stuck to original :)

Raat ke humsafar- a duet to change the mood

was happy to be able to sing the songs above. Thanks for listening, if you get around to it :)

Thanks for sharing these audios, Mr. Birdie. I'll listen to them later tonight -- past midnight PT. I'm attending my three hour evening lecture and working on a presentation at the same time.

and sneaking into here to be the first one to like and comment. 😆

I see some of my favorite songs up there. :) Later.

Thanks BN for sharing your songs with us. It is very interesting to all of us, the music lovers, listening to such melodious voices. 👏

Woh shaam kutch ajeeb thi -- What can I say about such melancholic melody? It literally stirs your soul and transports your thoughts to a different universe where lovely imagery awaits for your imagination to flourish!!

There is an interesting anecdote behind that song --

‘“Kuchh bol do. Kuchh bann nahi raha hai [Give me some words... I am not able to compose anything],” said Hemant- da, sitting in his favourite reclining position inside the cosy little music room with his longs legs stretched out, one hand on the harmonium,’ Gulzar says.

‘Remember, he was a tall man. Dada had been sitting in this position for a long time, stylishly taking pinches of snuff and wiping his hand on the end of his dhoti with great flourish. But he was unable to produce any tune.

Thus came the line “Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi, yeh shaam bhi ajeeb hai. Woh kal bhi paas thi, woh aaj bhi kareeb hai”.

Gulzar continues, ‘After composing the mukhra around my lyrics, Dada composed the tune for the antara because they were complementary notes. Then I wrote the antara’s lyrics on the basis of the tune. The order had been reversed.

This raga, along with Pahadi and Bhairavi, is one of the most used ragas in Hindi films. Almost all composers, from Anil Biswas to A.R. Rahman, have used Yaman to structure their tunes. While most have used the Yaman backbone and added their own interpretations, like a Komal Ni, Hemant hardly digresses beyond the notes of the textbook. He may have done this to avoid creating a melancholic mood. The feel in the song is one of hope...

Hemant’s foresight lay in using Kishore for a song of immeasurable depth!

Thanks once again for sharing this wonderful song, BN Ji. ❤️

thanks so much for the anecdote. These guys have all had such towering personalities! I've been listening to a lot of Hemant Da songs the past 2 years. And of course Kishore da's. As it happens, Gulzar sahab was in the US recently. Some members of my group had a chance to visit with him for 4 hours at someone's home! Unfortunately I couldn't make it because of work.... Anyway, I believe Woh Shaam Kucch Ajeeb Thi was considered by Kishore da himself as among his top 5 favorites. I just love the song!!!

as an aside, I had a chance to do a book report on Khamoshi in college. We were asked to write about a movie we had seen and deal with it in terms of freudian psychology. My mother recommended I watch Khamoshi- one of her favorite songs has been Humne Dekhi Hai. I couldn't make much headway with it till she provided me with interesting perspectives/ analysis that allowed me to do well in that course.

Hey,

I just listened to your performances. They're undoubtedly beautiful songs and your voice is very well suited to them, esp. the first one. I remember you saying that Woh Shaam Kuch Ajeeb is one of your all time favorites. That was the first time I listened to it. And a couple more times afterwards ... enough for it to sound familiar by now.

I think you did full justice to it. Not sure if my observation is correct, but you really ace the songs that flow evenly without going too high. Your voice makes them sound effortless, thought I'm sure it requires some form of control on your part.

And hey, listen to all those guys cheering and hooting for you .... you def. know how to work an audience. 👏

Roop Tera Mastana is one of my favorites, and I imagine that couldn't have been easy with all the vocal tricks it must require to convey the passion/story of the song. Tough pick but you held the notes and it was a great overall performance.

Mere Sapnon ki Rani -- I could listen to that noise all day and night cuz it's soothing to my ears. :p

I'm not familiar with the remaining songs but I listened to them. and I'm sure it all added up to a perfect tribute to the phenomenon that Kishore Kumar was and still is in the world of Indian music.

Lastly, it was very interesting to read all those behind the scene stories from Viswasruti. Very fascinating, I must say.

and your story on that Khamoshi song, which I had to look up on google, was also touching. amazing poetry.

Thanks again for sharing your voice (probably the closest thing us IF people will ever get to your identity, apart from that DP) and all the stories to go with it.
