Fan appreciation for Pawandeep's stellar all round performance at Durban on 20 Aug 2022.

Background: they had flown Mumbai - Addis Ababa - Jo'burg - Durban and gone straight to the show without rest. He was the only person performing on stage throughout the show. Since regular drummer Tushar did not make it to SA, Pawandeep played the drums during Danish and Arunita's performance. And then he had his own performance. And during his performance he took over the keyboard - and it was just him on stage with everyone else taking a break before they rejoined him for the rest of his performance.

Main Bewaffa Nahin sung by Pawandeep for Anand Milind is out on audio now.

A very characteristic 1990s feel to the music and lyrics. Well sung by Pawandeep but his voice continues to sound different compared to his natural voice. Overall I would say like 7 out of 10 or max 8, for the whole package.

Sorry for replying so late. Heard the audio and I must say, Pawan has never sounded better. Technically I really wanna know what AM did to his voice because its unlike any other recording before!

Another thing I noticed is AM never gave such songs in the 90s...this is the first time they are exploring this genre of music. Their romantic numbers were either reminiscent of their favorites Laxmikant-Pyarelal or had a more...idk what's the word...kinda "sophisticated" touch to it?! I hope u get what I am trying to say 😆

That's nice tho...it shows that artists can explore at any day and age these days.

Well, I felt the lyrics and music sounded typical 1990s - maybe not so much signature Anand Milind, but 90s.

I also felt that Pawandeep's voice does not sound like his natural voice - which we have heard on stage and in his own productions. It is closer to whatever HR does with his voice, though HR goes to the extreme.

Video of Main Bewaffa Nahinn is out now. Having heard and seen this again, here's my updated thinking:

What I liked:

- Pawandeep's voice suits these lyrics and this tune. He brings a certain amount of pathos which is required here

- Most of the times he is actually singing in the song in the video - for those high notes, that adds impact to the video

- The Sitar and Violin add a wonderful touch to this song. Kudos to Anand Milind or whoever did the arrangement for choosing these.

What I didn't like:

- The video is too jumpy - too many short clips put together. Proper planning and storyboarding of shots would have helped them shoot longer duration takes and would have made the video better

- Some parts are probably re-shot for closeups - and in those Pawandeep doesn't seem to be actually singing but just lip-syncing. That reduces the impact of the video by making the visuals out of sync with the audio.

It is very 90s yes...the lyrics are very much what Sameer ji has written in the past, but the tune has a more...Noor Jehan feel to it? Hence I say A-M have never given something like before, because their romantic numbers have always been more peppy, even if it had thehrav.

I didn't hear any kind of autotuning and stuff, so its possible that they have utilised him very well. Sometimes all it takes is a good tune and mixing in order to get the best out of a singer. And these guys are veterans, they know what they're doing.

@bold: PD in HR's songs was still better than what they did to Aditya's voice in Har Ek Chehre Mein...I couldn't believe it was him. So far the male singers who haven't had much done to their voices in HR's songs (off the top of my head) are Salman, Ankush and Sawai (there's a bit something done, I guess fine tuning it).

I agree with everything you said.

Have never been a PD stan, liked his voice but always leaned more towards Arunita...however I don't think any other male singer could sing this song better than him. His voice texture really suits the song.

@bold: Anand-Milind have done it themselves...its given in the credits. HR's team is on board too (Suhas and Subhash Parab) but we know how they program coz we've heard them do HR's previous songs...both songs from DDRR are very distinct sound-wise too...I'm sure AM went all the way till mixing and mastering.

Have you heard PD's own Yaad (Kumaoni original, not Hindi) and Ekali Gwala? His voice sounds less "tinny" there than here, and in HR's songs it is extreme.

And I agree about Aditya - I had felt the same too. He has such a wonderful natural voice. I feel sad that we have not heard him more.

Yeah I have heard those songs so I know what you mean. What they have done for MBN, imo, is added quite a bit of reverb...its not "tuned".

Adi sounded really good in that Shamshera song too...I wonder why he didn't focus much on singing, given that he sounds lovely.

Clearly you have a lot more technical understanding of these things that I do - I was just going by ear 😃

Aditya - I feel it might be less of a case of "he didn't focus" and more of he wasn't given enough opportunities. Children of hit artists / sportsmen generally suffer from that - for whatever reason they get marginalised.
