Even if you don't watch Ābhāḷācī Māyā on Sun Marathi - a remake of the Tamil serial Vāṉattaip Pōla, please feel free to vote on these three pairs of cousins possibly getting married!

Don't just choose one option!

Ambika was breastfed by Raghav's mother, her Ātyā. How do you feel about Ambika marrying her first cousin Raghav?

Ashvini said to her ātte bhāū Jayadev that she has always regarded him as her elder brother. How do you feel about Jayadev marrying his first cousin Ashvini?

Urmila's mother is the māme bahīṇa of Raghav's father. How do you feel about māme bhāū Raghav marrying his second cousin, ātte bahīṇa Urmila?

Am ok with any marriage where girl n boy are ok with it .
In Andhra Pradhesh and Maharashtra … the Marathi and Telugu societies have had such alliances since olden days . It’s common practice even today. No one is forced.

If the girl n boy are happy and the families are OK with it, Supreme Court n fundamental rights allow it, why should others bother ? To each his/her own !

Thanks for the reply. I agree that consenting adults should be free to marry, but no one should be willfully ignorant of the increased prevalence of genetic problems in each generation born of inbreeding.

You would vote for "Ambika marrying Raghav wouldn't be incest," "Jayadev marrying Ashvini wouldn't be incest," and "Raghav marrying Urmila wouldn't be incest." But would you also vote for "Jayadev shouldn't marry Ashvini due to those sisterly feelings?"

Or, is it all right for Ashvini to go on feeling that Jayadev is her brother, while happily married to him? This question is for everyone, not trying to put you on the spot.

On Ābhāḷācī Māyā, Ambika was being forced to marry Raghav, and now she's going along with it out of respect for her brother and aunt. Ashvini hasn't told her violent father about her boyfriend, and so she and Jayadev are being forced to marry. Urmila's mother wants to force Raghav to marry Urmila.

Thank you to whoever cast the first three votes, against all three pairings due to genetic relatedness.

The show just gave us a fourth hypothetical cousin-pairing! Rangarav's elders expected him to marry his māme bahīṇa Sunanda, who was raised in his home!

When a woman's māhera and sāsara are the same, doesn't it feel just like marrying her paternal uncle's son or her brother? Since Sunanda and Rangarav didn't get married, they remember their past just as siblings would. Rangarav told Sunanda, you were a leka of this house in the past, but now you're just a pāhuṇī. And Sunanda, who hasn't spoken to Rangarav in ~20 years since she eloped, addresses him not by his name but as Dādā. Did she call him that while they were promised to each other in marriage?

TO be honest, i didnt think this much. As I said they are copying original blindly, and in tamil culture, this doesnt come under incest, and if it's so in Marathi culture, i dont understand why they approve it in AM.

Only Raghav (maternal uncle's son) and Urmila (paternal aunt's daughter) would be non-permitted cousin-marriage in Marathi culture.

But each of the other pairings is complicated by breastfeeding and sibling-feelings!

All this atte-bhau and Mame tai stuff is very confusing to my little mind ,

All of the first cousin love interests weren't incestuous enough for this show. They just had Raghav making eyes at his grandmother, pinning her to a pillar, and trying to stroke her cheek because he daydreamed that she was his cousin/wife Ambika.

What a family-friendly show! I mean, in the sense that the entire family feels entitled to know whether Raghav and Ambika are working on a great-grandchild for the grandmother that they share.

The parents disturb the newlywed cousins in their bedroom to tell them, we just realized that there's no moon tonight, so you can't get it on!

Then Sunanda tells her cousin Rangarav that if his daughter-in-law Ambika won't let her cousin have her tonight, it's proof that she is an adulteress!

Vishvanath saves the day (literally) by announcing Gurujī's opinion that it's astrologically auspicious to proceed.

And Vinita asks Jayadev if he agrees with Sarasvati that Sunanda will stop finding excuses to keep Raghav and Ambika apart as soon as they let her know that the deed is done.

Even the servant Mangya whines, while sprinkling petals on the bed, that it's not his honeymoon! And Jayadev reminds him to smile because it's the most important day of Ambika's life.

Is it a rule that two people who have never even kissed must hit a home run within one night? Can't they be given their privacy to try out new activities at their own pace?

I am learning so much from this show! Particularly that if a girl keeps her cousin waiting too long, he'll lose his mind and either make love to a pillar or decide that their grandmother will do.

You have added quite a few more. Now it's all convoluted to me.
