After the success of Bahubali series,I don't think any of the big budget South Indian films are being made keeping only South Indian audience in mind. Almost every big budget film is trying to position themselves as a Pan Indian film. It started with the Telugu film industry and now it's the Kannada film industry after KGF. Even Rakshit Shetty and Sudeep are positioning themselves and making their films keeping Pan India in mind if you look at how their current film is being marketed. Forget big budget films, even mid budget films starring not so popular actors like Major are being made and marketed like that for the Hindi belt as well. I mean the PR of these films are insane and annoying, they keep paying the box office pundits to keep hyping their films even when it's doing bad business in theatres.
Only Tamil and Malayalam cinema look like they really dgaf about any other audience except their own.
I agree to some extent, the exaggeration that hindi movies are finished is as bad as this
but one can't deny that bb and kgf were both game changers and that the right movie can crack all languages and get to 1000 cr + which is mind boggling
i think the additional publicity game eveything the kannada and telugu industry learnt from bollywood and are playing the same game which may be irritating
i dont think all movies are being marketed as pan india, example big releases in telugu were bheemla nayak, sarakaru vari paata and acharya which were not pan india because makers were very clear they won't appeal, additionally shyam singha roy (which given its bengal backdrop may have in fact found some appeal), dj tillu, akhanda etc also released locally.
i think makers there also know that all movies cannot have universal appeal, but some will try, rakshit's movies have urban appeal, especially 777 charlie and major is about mumbai terrorism so there is some logic in releasing in hindi
tamil has the ambition of being pan india and they tried it with vikram and beast but failed because they still do not have the network and the distribution hold and the stars or directors are not really comfortable in mumbai (similar for a mahesh or pawan kalyan too), they actually had robo, roja, bombay etc which were kind of pan indian
just wait and watch for ponniyin selvan they will do it
malayalam has always been very clear about being local and don't even dub in other southern languages and have low budgets and revenues
i think if some movies getting pan india reach is great if it provide impetus to some movies with big budgets and bring more variety to audience and push filmamakers to greater quality, ott, you tube is already doing it as people as getting exposed to great content from world over
bollywood at one time had hum aapke hainkaun and a maine pyar kiya which actually did well in south
whether they like it or not south has pushed the boundaries in stories, reach and genres across langauges and they should focus on up-ing their game
i feel there are filmmakers like om raut (adi purush will be huge) or hirani who will quitely do it, the others especially kjo needs to calm down let the work talk
