This is quite common...the names are shortened to be easily understood and pronounced by not just Americans but for others as well.

Even a four letter name is made so small , it sounds funny.

My own name confuses people ..they say Saki or Sachi. .I have been suggested to make it smaller .

Nah, make them say it right. If we can learn to say Tchaikovsky a 2.5 syllable name isn't hard.
