Hitting the road with Rannvijay
To those uninitiated, Rannvijay son of an army man is the winner of the very first season of the popular MTV show, Roadies. Currently he is seen anchoring the show and is also soon to hit the big screen. Rannvijay in his short stint as a Veejay has gathered a huge fan following. The credit for his popularity goes to his unconventional good looks, rugged body, charming demeanour and the ability to communicate with the contestants and the audience without a fake accent.

Can you share your experiences as a Roadie?

As I had plans of joining the Army and it was during that time that Roadies happened, so I decided to give it a shot with just one aim- to simply rough it up. I just wanted to have fun in those 40 days. I enjoyed my fun-tasks, made great friends, and did stuff for our teams and ourselves. It was fun winning those small-small prizes out of fun tasks assigned to us. I had a carefree attitude during those times. We as Roadies fought, cried and laughed at everything. I didn't have to act and be responsible for the failures.

How have things changed now as an anchor?

Now it has become one's career, one's job and one's responsibility. Now if a task doesn't happen I get stressed. I should know what I have to say as an anchor. I have to be prepared now whereas as a Roadie it's all about spontaneity. I am surrounded by thirteen contestants who at times are stressed or annoyed. The show is so much about them and not about me. I will have to do what I am supposed to do even if I am sad, annoyed or hurt.

Is this what you always wanted to do?

It was never in my plan list. In fact I was all set to join the Army but destiny had something else in store for me and the rest is history.

What is that one inevitable thing about a Veejay?

The right kind of attitude. I think one should simply be oneself.

How do you prepare for Roadies?

I have to undergo a lot of preparation; the most important part is that before making our Roadies perform a task we try it ourselves thus, finding out if that particular task is worth doing and if it is safe to do. I simply love my job as I too get to perform the same task and live the passion involved in performing it. There is an undying hunger of trying something new which is unseen and unheard of yet safe.

Best and worst thing about being a Veejay?

Best thing about being a Veejay is that you get to travel a lot and do crazy things and meet crazy people. Worst thing about being a Veejay is flying economy class.

Who is your favourite Veejay?

Nikhil, Cyrus Broacha and Cyrus Sahukar can give anyone a run for their money.

Most of the Veejays sport alien accents. Why?

I don't know about others but one would not find me putting on an accent. In fact my Hindi is probably the best and I use it the most on my show.

VJs have a very short shelf life. So how do you deal with the insecurity?

I have been constantly working since the past six years. I think I have 7 to 8 more years in hand as I feel very young. It takes a couple of years for people to accept you and it took me sometime as well to make a place of my own in the industry. Whenever I hear people saying that I am their favourite Roadie without having seen me even once it really motivates me to give my best and live up to their expectations. I don't feel insecure at all.

What is your greatest passion?

My bike. I love it more than anything else in this world.

What are your future plans?

I want to continue veejaying for next five years of my life. I don't believe in planning my life. I take life as it comes. I am happy with the way my life is shaping up especially with my career graph moving upwards.

What sets you apart from other Veejays?

That's for people to tell. I can't say what makes me different from other Veejays.

Finally, are you and Anusha Dandekar a couple?

One will spot us together most of the time as our work demands a lot of travelling. Some time back when I was in Australia, I got to know from a friend that I was getting married to Anusha. I was in splits. This is something that we both have chosen not to answer .

cheers
