I dont know about Maratha culture. you should know better. What I read is there are 96 Kshatriya families under Maratha /Rajput umbrella who are the protectors/peshwas/kings whatever. They are known for their valour and word. Chavan is one of them.

96 kuli maratha are the clans who supported Shivaji Maharaj.... Mavla as they were called then... known for their valour and courage.

They later became subhedars and proxy rulers.

For example, Peshwa was a honorary post (kind off like prime minister) given to a brahmin family (unique as they usually stayed away from active war) ... the ruler was Bhonsale (Shivaji Maharajs descendents) in Satara. Bajirao I is most well known and most brave.

TBH Chavan is a dhabba on being called as such.
