Hello hello,
So I've always only exclusively watched Bollywood movies and never really gave any other Indian language film a watch. My first movie with South Indian actors was Baahubali and I needed to know, Katappa ne Baahubali ko kyon maara? However, this was watched in Hindi. I ended up loving it. It was over the top done right - like you know this can't happen but I was sitting there waiting for everyone to fly.
Then I watched Ajay's Drishyam and enjoyed it a lot. I found out later it was a South remake and there was a part 2. I got introduced to the world that is Malayalam cinema. There may be better movies, there probably are, but to someone who has predominantly watched Hindi movies, this was sheer brilliance. I never thought an Indian movie could be such an intoxicating thriller, but here I was. I had heard about the lead acting ability, but to see it was amazing.
So I decided, I was going to watch South movies more - in any language I could find - subtitles are a God's gift. However, life reminded me I'm an adult who has to pay bills and earn money if I wanted to splurge on things.
Then a month ago, I saw the trailer for Jana Gana Mana and was intrigued. The whole mundane build-up to the final shot - OMG. I was hoping to catch it soon. But life came knocking to remind me yet again. So tonight when browsing the International section of Netflix, I was pleasantly surprised. So guess who hit play? Yup, me.
Now, I went on a roller coaster of feelings - from feeling confused, to feeling sad, to feeling uncomfortable, to feeling shocked, to again feeling uncomfortable, to feeling what the F did I just watch....to then realizing that what I saw in the trailer was not even shown or mentioned in the movie. The movie was a thrilling ride that I loved being on - everything seemed to connect so well.
If you love thrillers, please do watch it. There are so many plot twists but they all connect. Even if you don't love thrillers, just watch it. Good cinema should not be missed lol.
I loved how it showed today's life - protesting, bandwagoning, public court of opinion, media's power - so universal. Please let there be a part 2!
Lastly, can you guys recommend any other South Indian movies I could watch? I love most genres but not romance. I'm too old to find stalkerish love stories cute anymore, or those sad ones. Please and thank you!
