I had mentioned earlier, mine was a typical arranged marriage, I had met my spouse-to-be only once for about an hour, followed by a handful of conversations over the phone. We both hail from different cities, hence complete stangers with nothing in common.
The day after my marriage, I was supposed to leave with my husband’s family to their home in another city by train. We were in the railway station, I was standing amongst our relatives on the platform, my stomach was churning, lump in my throat prevented me from talking to anyone.
It was almost time for the train to depart, I went around bidding goodbye to everyone. I was very hesitant to board the train; I really did not feel like going with my husband.
I reluctantly boarded the train and stood at the foot of the door. I was blinded by tears, the train jolted and began to move slowly. My husband was standing behind me, arms around my shoulder. The train picked up speed and within moments my family had vanished out of sight. I turned around when my husband handed me a spotless white handkerchief to wipe off my tears. I looked at him and felt as if I was seeing him for the first time. That was probably the moment of realization; several thoughts went through my mind – is this it? Is he all I have now? What do I know about him? What about my career dreams?
He walked me to a seat midst several of his relatives. I traveled with a coach full of people that I did not know. I was nervous, anxious, happy and sad all at the same time. But I had to keep the smile painted on my face for the sake of on-lookers. I had travelled alone in train on journeys that spanned over 3-4 days, but this six hour journey seemed like longest journey in my life.
We reached his house and MIL put together a quick grihpravesh ritual. While I was waiting outside,my mind was spinning; the long journey had left me very tired I felt as if I was going to faint. Barely able to stand, I invoked a silent prayer; asking for help from lord to find those, whom I had left behind; to find my parents in the form of in-laws, to help me find my sibling in this new home and this time I wouldn’t want to part with anyone.
Thus began my journey into an unknown world, stepping into the next phase of life even before the previous one ended.
