Night me Appu kukki gang ke sath kuch planning kar rahi thi, shashank upar ki balcony se sab dekh raha hai chupke se S : Ye ladki kab mature hogi, kukki gang ke sath milkar jarur kuch kand karegi. Par mai kyu iske bare me soch raha hu? Muze is time babi aattya ke liye sochna chahiye, shisht ke bare me nahi. But shisht bhi definitely babi aattya ke liye hi kuch plan kar rahi hogi. I don't think they are at the level yet where they would have a date and private dance...maybe in their dream sequence but not irl yet.

LOVE: Listen, Observe, Value, Embrace
Note: I don't know exactly how this happens in the original but this is just my wild imagination. I honestly think that Appu is already in love with her Khadus and may even know her feelings somewhat but is stopping herself especially with her insecurities. And Shashank might be a little out of character here but with the lover boy we’ve seen of him recently, it might not be too out of the realm of possibility. Hindi is not my main language, what I know is from watching movies but I’m going to try to write most of the dialogue in Hindi just because I think it gives a better feel for these characters than English so sorry in advance for grammatical errors.
Backstory: This is after Appu passes her exams but Shashank doesn’t want to let her go but hasn’t exactly outright confessed yet. Appu still leaves from K house. (BTW, one year is not up yet, since exams and results were long before their wedding so there’s probably about a month left before their anniversary)
Part 1: Listen
The Kanetkar’s were sitting around in the veranda late night thinking about the past 2 days. After much scolding and pleading and force over the past couple months, their beloved Appu began to study and passed her exams in first class, barely, and left the Kanetkar house. They tried to stop her but when she didn’t listen, they let her go and decided to give her a few days to think before trying to talk to her again.
Mai: Mujhe sachme laga ki Appu pass hone ke baad bhi, humse door nahin jayegi.
Dada Kaka (DK): Mujhe viswas tha ki, ek saal me Shashank aur Appu ke beech sab theek ho jayega. Un dono ke beech pyaar ayega. Shayad mein galat thi.
Kukki: Nahin Dada. Aap ka vishwas bikul sahi tha. Humare Kukki Gang se puchiye. Is ek saal mein hum log hamare saare 10 kaan aur 10 aankh Shashank aur Appu ke aas paas hi rakha. Hum log ne dekha jis tarah se voh dono ek durse se alag nahin reh sakte.
Nikhil: Kukki is right. Babi atya ki shaadi ke vaqt, Appu ghar per nahin ti, toh Shashank bechan hogaya.
Sumi: Aur Appu, Dada institute se thodi dher aye, toh pareshan hojati hai.
Prachi: Dono Tom and Jerry ki thara hai
Mansi: Haa…in dono ka tho vo haal hai: can’t live with you, can’t live without you. Thabi toh Bhauji ne voh contract papers phek diye. Bhauji shayad bolenge nahin par voh Appu se pyaar karta hai, I’m sure.
Amey: Vese Shashank hai kaha?
Sua Aai: Voh institute ke bad bhaar gaya hai, kaha kuch zaroori kaam hai.
Shashank just enters the house, but looks heartbroken. Kukki gang calls after him but he doesn’t listen and is about to walk up to his room, lost in his thoughts.
Kukki: shakes him; Shashank, what happened?
Sua Aai: Bada, tu thik hai?
Shashu: Ha aai, bas kuch soch rahi thi.
DK: Shashank, hum sab keliye tumari khushi sabse zyada important hai. Tumara jo bhi decision hoga, we are with you. Do you really want to separate from Appu?
Shashu: immediately without pause. Bilkul nahi. Dada kaka, I know main iss shadi keliye totally ready nahi thi and baad mein haa bhi isilye kiya tha kyunki Apurva ne ye exam ki condition and contract rakha tha. But now, mein uske bina nahi rehna chatha hoon.
Everybody stands up listening to him and start smiling.
Kukki: matlab tu Appu se pyaar karta hai?
Shashu: ye sawaal tum mujhse puch kyun rahi ho Kukki? Iska jawab tho tume or tumari Kukki gang ko pehle se batata, hai na?
Mai: matlab?
Shashu: with a small smile on his face; matlab ye Mai ki Dada Kaka ka koi bhi decision kabhi galat nahi ho sakthi. Mujhe uss Shisht ki aadat padgayi. Phele mujhe ye shanti or discipline pasand aati thi, par ab uski shor or masti ke bina mera din poora nahin lagta. Ha vo thoda immature hai or childish bhi, par jo bachkani harkate mujhe pehle bilkul pasand nahin thi, vo ab mujhe achi lagti hai, kabhi kabhi. Uski innocence ne mujhe kahi ka nahin choda.
Realizing what he means, everybody has a delighted 440K watt smile on their faces.
Sumi: Dada ab vo ek line bhi bol do jiskeliye humari Kukki gang ek saal se wait kar rahi hai. Please.
Shashu: smiling broadly with shyness and blushing; Majhe majhi Shisth bayakovar khup prema ahe.
Kukki gang screams with delight and starts cheering and dancing while hugging each other. Sua Aai and Vittu Baba hug their son crying in joy, while Mai and DK are hugging each other crying tears of pride.
Kukki gang along with Prachi and Panna, continues to dance and drags Shashank into the center to dance around him, while he is blushing and laughing.
Nikhil: Shashank, you have no idea how much we’ve waited to hear you say that. Matlab humne tum dono ko paas lane keliye bahut try kiya.
Amey: Kuch plans hum par ulta padgayi par phir bhi try toh kiya.
Shashu: chuckling ha ha janta hoon; tum logon ga Aliking rituals, Chaand darshan, honeymoon picnic, etc, etc…
Sumi: are par Dada, humari plans kaam kare ya nahin, kuch zabardast memories tho bane na.
Shashu: blushing but with a fake stern face; Sumi, I’m you big brother, don’t forget.
Sumi giggles and says sorry holding her ears.
Mansi: Sumi thik hi tho bol rahi hai Bhauji. Matlab aap dono ko paas lane keliye humari Kukki gang ki saare members ne pichle ek saal se humari aankh, kaan, pair, sab kuch aapke kamre ke taraf hi rakha. Kitne sara ajib ajib ideas use kiya aap dono par.
Kukki: are All’s well that ends well. Finally, Shashank ne accept kiya ki voh Appu se pyaar karta hai.
Babi Atya (BA): (always the voice of reason): Par Appu ka kya?
Everybody stops listening to her, their smiles slowly diminishing.
BA: Shashank Appu se pyaar karta hai, ye thik hai, actually bahut khushi ki baat hai. Par Appu ka kya? We all saw, voh kaise Shashank ke contract papers phekne ke baad bhi chale gayi. She didn’t want to go, voh dikh raha tha. But kyu? Usse hum sabse door nahin jana tha ya Shashank se? Rishta toh inn dono ka hai. Agar Appu Shashank ke saath nahin rehna chathi tho iss khushi ka kya matlab?
Prachi: Vansa thik bol rahi hai. Appu yehase janna nahin chathi thi voh hum sabko dikh raha tha, par phir bhi voh chale gayi. Shashank Appu se pyaar karta hai par Appu ka kya?
Mai: hum sab ek kaam karte hai, kal sab Appu ke paas jaate hai or usse samjhane ki koshish karte hai.
Sua Aai: haa, yeh sahi hai Mai. Kuch bhi karke hum usse vapas leke ayenge.
Shashank: loudly Nahin Aai.
Kukki: Shashank tu hume rokh kyu raha hai? You want Appu back in your life right?
Shashank: Of course Kukki, par zabardasti nahin. Apurva apni marzi se gayi haina, toh vapas bhi apni marzi se hi aayegi. Koi usse force nahin karega. Shaadi zabardasti ya thoda blackmail karke kiya jasaktha hai but there is a difference between a wedding and a marriage. Iss shaadi ko hum dono apni marzi se, khushi se, nibhana hoga. Iss liye, please, meri request hai aap sabse. Koi Apurva ko force mat karna.
Nikhil: par Shashank, hum Appu ko force karne nahin, usse samjhane ki baat kar rahe hai.
Shashank: Please kuch mat karna. Mujhe thoda waqt dho, main kuch sochta hu.
He leaves to his room ignoring everybody’s calls behind him.
Everyone sits down again dejected, their happiness from moments ago evaporating into a new pain and fear, afraid for their boy to be rejected in love.
DK after looking at his family and thinking over Shashank’s words tells everyone to go sleep and that they will think about what to do tomorrow.
Shashank’s room
His thoughts: I can’t believe what I heard today. How did I not see this before? How did I not understand her problem? Why couldn’t I see the real reason behind her actions? Why couldn’t I understand her true pain and fear behind her mask of smiles and laughter? If I didn’t decide to go to Dr. Kaushik’s house today, then I might have never known.
Shashank thinks back to how he was at work this morning but couldn’t concentrate thinking about Apurva and how to fix this relationship.
Flashback
Shashank in his office thinking about Apurva. Netra comes into the office after knocking couple times with no response. She sees Shashank lost in thoughts and decides to try to get close to him.
Netra: Shashank sir (touches his shoulder)
Shashank is startled and immediately removes her hand and asks her why she is there.
Netra (talking fast without break): Sir, I know, aap us bigdail ladki ke bhare me soch rahe hai. But you don’t need to anymore, I know she left. Uski exams hogayi hai. I never thought she would actually pass voh bhi first class but achha hua na. Ab aapko uske tantrums and childish behavior jhelne nahin padenge. Aur ab shayad hum—
Shashank immediately stops her: Enough Netra. Meri life mein kya horaha hai, isse tume koi farak nahin padnichaye. My personal life is none of your business so please stay out of it.
Netra; But sir mein toh-
Shashank: Agar tume kuch kaam hai Netra toh apni team members ke saath discuss karo. I’m leaving.
Shashank immediately leaves the office ignoring Netra completely. He decides to go to Vartak house to try to meet Appu and see if she would talk to him. When he reaches, one of the maids open the door and tell him that Dr. Kaushik is at the hospital, Dr. Anjali went out to see some friends but Appu is in the garden with Sarika Atya. He goes towards the garden to talk to them but stops by one of the doors when he hears Appu saying his name.
Scene: Garden
Appu: Khadus mujhe miss nahin karega.
SA: Appu, don’t say that. Kya tu sachme Kanetkars se door jana chati hai?
Appu: Aur koi option bhi tho nahin hai na Atti. Meine aur Khadus ne shaadi se pehle hi decide kiya tha na ki mera exams mein first class ane ke baad hum separate honge.
SA: Haa par iss one year bahut change hogaya na? Tum uss puri family se bahut pyaar karti hu na aur shayad Shashank se bhi, hai na?
Appu lost in thoughts about her Khadus and has a bittersweet smile on her face. Seeing Appu not responding to her, SA shakes Appu and again asks if nothing changed.
Appu: Bahut kuch badal gaya hai Atti. Mujhe voh puri family bahut bahut bahut pasand hai. In fact, mere liye toh Kanetkar family is the best family in the world. Dada Kaka paise or discipline ki mamle mein strict but thoda modern bhi. Voh head of the family hai par koi dictator nahin hai. He lets everyone take their own decisions by just guiding them in the right way. Mai loves everyone equally, voh puri family ko jodke rakthi hai. Vittu Baba aur Sua Aai toh bahut sweet hai. Matlab mein toh risthe mein unki bahu hu na, but still voh mere liye Khadus ko bhi dhantenge. Panna kaku tho bahut hi innocent hai aur bas sabki khuski chathi hai. Babi Atya bhi DK ki tarah discipline aur padayi pe focused hai par hamare saath kabhi kabhi masti bhi karti hai. Prachu toh ghar me sabse chote hai par bahut mature hai, kabhi koi ziddh ya tantrums nahin karti. Aur meri Kukki gang..voh toh sabse best hai. Vaise toh Kukki hum sabki Kaka hai par kabhi aisa behave nahin karte. Hum sabke saath milke masti karta hai. Sumi or Mansi Vahini toh meri sisters hai. Sumi ke liye toh me uski bhabhi hu na par kabhi voh mujhe outsider ki tarah treat nahin karti. Ha voh apni Dada ki ladli hai par hamesha meri side leti hai. Aur Mansi Vahini toh bahut pure hai. Hum dono iss family ki bahu hai par unhone kabhi complaint nahin ki hai mere bare mein. Mein unki tarah khana nahin banati ya ghar ka kaam nahin karti, etc, etc. She could complaint a lot if she wants ki hum dono ko alag treat karte hai but she doesn’t care. Unkeliye toh mai unki chotti behen hu. Aur Amey Dada aur Nikhil Dada toh mujhe sachme apne little sister mante hai. You know what Atti, jab bhi college mein meri classmates ki brothers ko une pick karne keliye aate hue dekthi hu na, toh meri bahut wish thi ki kaash meri life mein bhi koi esa hota jho mujhe aisa protect karta, meri care karta. Aur meri ye wish Ameya Dada aur Nikhil Dada ne pura kiya. Voh dono mujhe sachme pamper karte hai, care karte hai or protect bhi.
(Appu smiles thinking about her lovely family)
Shashank listens to all of this with a broad smile on his face thinking about however much his family loves Appu, Appu loves them all even more. His thoughts are disturbed by SA’s question.
SA: Aur Shashank?
Appu: Khadus? (smiling) Khadus bhi meri care karta hai, genuinely. I know that. Iss liye toh voh hamesha mere piche pada rehte hai about my studies.
SA: Toh phir tum unn sabse door kyu ja rahi hu Appu? You won’t ever find such a loving family again. They are very understanding and caring. Aur Shashank toh bahut hi intelligent and settled ladka hai. Voh apni family keliye kuch bhi karsakta hai.
Appu: Iss liye toh main vaha aur nahin ruk sakti Atti.
Shashank and SA are confused by her statement. Seeing SA confusion, Appu tries to explain.
Appu: Dekho Atti, I know voh family bahut hi sweet, caring, loving aur understanding hai. Iss liye mujhe unhe aur pareshan nahin karna hai Atti. Aap ne kaha na ki iss one year mein bahut kuch badal gaya. Ha meri feelings change hogay but I don’t fit into their family. Mein un sabse bahut alag hu. Voh log humari culture ko bahut mante hai aur mujhe inn sari cheezon ke bare mein kuch nahin pata aur ye baat shaadi ke time prove bhi hogaya. Ghar mein sari ladies subha utkar cooking karte hain, ghar ka kaam karte hai. Mein unn sabke saath rehkar subha utna seekh gayi but I still don’t how to cook well aur mujhe ghar ka baaki kaam tho sahi se ati bhi nahin na. Sab log bahut hi matured hai aur respectful bhi, especially towards elders. I don’t follow all that, I just say whatever I think. I know ye saab voh log mind nahin karte but kab tak? At some point, they will tired of me, just like Anjali Vartak.
SA: Appu!
Appu: Sahi bhol rahi hu Atti. (crying) When my own mom couldn’t handle me, then how will they? Meri apni mom ko kuch saal bad mein important nahin lagi, toh kisi aur ko kese lagungi?
SA hugs Appu and consoles her.
Appu: Aur ha Khadhus ki baat hai toh ha, voh bahut hi intelligent hai or mature bhi. Voh sachme apni family keliye kuch bhi karsakta hai, meri jese ladki ko bhi apni wife ki jagah desaktha hai. But uskeliye bahut his embarassing hoga na. I mean voh gold medalist, scientist of the year, aur main ek baar fail hone ke baad, abhi abhi BA pass ladki. Uski profession mein, usse bahut hi bade log se milna hota hain, bhaut sare conferences mein jana padta hai. Jab voh apni collegues se baat karta ho, aur voh log usse puche ki tumari wife kya karti hai toh voh kya bolega, ki voh BA pass hai. Voh apni family se bahut pyaar karta hai issliye voh mere saath rehlega par uskeliye kitni embarassing hoga na. Aur ye saab sirf mein nahin, aur bhi log mante hai. Aapne khud suna na, kitni baar Netra Tai ne khud kaha ki main Khadus ki layak hi nahin hoon. And it’s true. He deserves someone better. Uska bhi mann hoga na, ki uski wife uskeliye khana banayi, tiffin pack kare, uski family ki dhyan rakhe. Mein voh sab nahin karsakti. Issliye mere usse door jana hi sahi hai Atti. Iss ek saal mein, maine un sabke saath bahut saari memories banayi hai, that’s enough for me. Isse phele ki voh log bhi mujhe meri mom ki tarah chodke chale jaye, mein hi unn sabse hai door agayi hun. So that I can at least have the good memories with them. And Khadus…sorry Shashank can get the life partner he deserves. Atti, mein thodi dher main aati hun.
Appu leaves crying from the garden to go out of the house, but doesn’t see Shashank standing at the opposite door. Shashank stood rooted in his spot, unable to process what he heard. Sarika Atya was about to enter the house when she sees Shashank.
SA: Shashank, tum yeha.
Shashank: Atya, voh mein…
SA: Tum thik ho?
Shashank (still shook): Mein baad mein aati hun. Please don’t say anything to Apurva about me. I will talk to her later.
End of Flashback.
Here’s Part 2! It’s kind of a filler but needed to follow the theme and to set up the premise for the next part!
Part 2: Observe
Scene: Park where Shashank was after fight with Kukki (continuation of flashback)
Shashank is lost in his thoughts. After leaving Vartak house, he went to the park, to his spot at the bench, to think about everything he heard. Memories starting flying through his brain.
Shashank POV:
Appu’s conversation over the phone with her mom on her birthday.
Him taunting her for not passing BA.
Anjali Vartak pretending that nothing happened and trying to act the part of a doting mother to Appu.
AV absent on the day of Appu’s Kelvan. Her nonchalant behavior on the day of the wedding during Bidaai. Her constant taunts and comments towards Appu, SA, and Dr.K.
I knew she was hurt a lot because of her mom but I never realized how much. The day she berated Deepali Aunty for her suicide act, the way she cried for Ovi, I realized how much she was affected by her mom but I never imagined that it left her with such fear of abandonment. And the situations since we met probably haven’t helped either, especially with Netra’s taunts and my silence.
Netra’s behavior during both of their Kelvan ceremonies and the taunts she passed Appu while feeding her.
Netra taunting Appu at every turn during their wedding functions.
Netra’s rude behavior with Appu every time they met at the institute.
Every time I was silent, only because I didn’t want to say something and worsen the already fragile relationship between two sisters or between Netra and Sarika Atya. I also at the end of the day have to work with Netra so I tried my best to keep peace between but it looks like my silence sent the wrong message. My silence gave both Netra and Apurva the wrong idea. Netra continued to taunt Apurva and Apurva must think that I agree with Netra somewhere.
After thinking about the same things again and again, he goes back home where he confesses to his family.
(END OF FLASHBACK; back to present)
Scene: Shashank’s room
His thoughts: First thing I need to do is make it absolutely clear to Apurva that I do not have any feelings for Netra and never did. She is nothing but my assistant to me. And then I need to figure out how to fix my relationship with my Shisth because I really cannot sleep without being her teddy every day. Pehle sone keliye usse teddy ki zarurath thi, par ab mujhe meri live teddy ke bina neend nahi athi.
K House Next Day
Everyone is having their breakfast together as usual but unlike every other day, the atmosphere is gloomy. Should they be happy that their all-the-time serious man Shashank has fallen in love with a lovely and lively woman or should they be worried about the potentially breaking relationship with said woman? They notice Shashank is sitting at the dining table barely eating and instead just playing with his food.
Mai nudges Sua Aai to talk to Shashank.
Sua Aai: Shashank, tu thik hai? Khana pasand nahin aya kya? Kuch aur banadu?
Shashank: Nahin Aai, mujhe zyada bhook nahin hai.
Panna: Tumari tiffin ready kardhu?
Shashank: Nahin Kaku, iski koi zarurat nahin hai. Meine 2 din ki chutti liye.
Everyone: KYA?
Kukki: shocked and trying to lighten the mood. Tumne apne aap chutti liya? vo bhi 2 din keliye? ye to 8th wonder hogaya.
Shashank: yesa kuch nahin hai. Mujhe bas thoda waqt chaye. Inn sab ke bareme sochne keliye, sab kuch sort out karne keliye, however it may end.
Nikhil: However it may end ka kya matlab hai?
Shashank: Matlab yeh ki mai Apurva ko koi zabardasti unwanted rishte mein nahin rakhna chathi. Agar voh sachme mujhe pasand nahin karti, toh mein use force nahin karungi. Mere liye uski happiness important hai aur kuch nahin.
Mansi: Bhauji, ye aap kya bolrahi hai? Shuruat kese bhi ho, par aapka aur Appu ka rishta koi unwanted ya zabardasti rishta nahin hai.
Sumi: Ha Dada, aur aapne ye kese sochliya ki Appu aapko pasand nahin karti. Usse aapki bahut fikar hai, voh aapki bahut care karti hai.
Amey: Mana ki tum dono hamesha ladti rehti ho. Par isse tum dono ki beech ka pyaar kum nahin hojatha, in fact tum donoki fights hi tumari pyaar hai.
KukkI: Shashank, Appu bhi tumse pyaar karti hai. Ye hum sabki guarantee hai. Humari Kukki Gang ki saari members ne bahut paas se dekha ki tumara hone ya naa hone se Appu ko kitna farak padtha hai. Issliye tho humne tume voh Honeymoon Picnic pe bulaya tha, kyunki Appu tume bahut miss kar rahi thi.
Sumi: Aur jab bhi voh Netra aapke aas paas hoti hai na, toh Appu becomes green with jealously.
Nikhil: exactly, yeha koi zabardasti nahin ho rahi hai. Appu bhi tumse pyaar karti hain.
Kukki Gang: SHE LOVES YOU!!!!!
Everybody knows that Appu is the closest to Kukki Gang and hearing them say so surely about Appu’s feelings, all of their hopes started to rise again and smiles started to make an appearance on everyone’s faces. Shashank too starts to smile lightly, feeling hopeful but was still unsure and confused.
DK: Shashank, whatever you decide, puri family tumare saath hai. Par ek baar shanti se socho, kya tume iss ek saal mein ek pal keliye bhi nahin laga ki Apurva tumse pyaar karti hai ya at least pasand karti hai?
Shashank leaves lost in his thoughts.
Scene: Shashank room - His POV
Maybe DK is right, but does she really like me and wants to be with me or does she want to be with this family?
Reminiscing the events of the past year: Apurva teasing DK and persuading for everything in her own style. Her singing classes with VB, which were nothing short of torture for the rest of the family. All her masti with her Kukki gang. Following Mai and Sua Aai everywhere during festivals, asking endless questions about everything and anything under the sun.
I know she loves this family a lot and can do absolutely anything for them. Par kya voh mujhse bhi pyaar karti hai? Kukki gang itna sure kese hai ki Apurva loves me. (End of POV)
Shashank spends the entire day thinking about all of his memories with Apurva. Her missing him during the picnic, running after him when he left in anger; her care and worry when he gets even a little delayed coming home from work; her trust in him to protect her during the whole bhoot incident.
The whole day, K family notices Shashank roaming aimlessly around the house, lost in his own thoughts. Upon DK’s strict orders, even Kukki gang left him alone to his thoughts, even when they wanted nothing more than tease him for smiling randomly with a besotted look on his face. They were all sure that he was thinking about Appu!
Scene: Vartak house
Appu was just as lost in thoughts in Vartak house. She kept wondering if she made the right choice to leave such a family. She knew that they loved her but her fears were overpowering her love and their love at the moment. And to worsen matters, her so-called mother’s behavior ever since the exam results came out were not helping.
Since Appu’s results were out, the only thing Dr.Anjali Vartak could say was that she was happy her daughter doesn’t need to say in that circus anymore and can now leave back to US peacefully. Appu was hurt even more seeing that her mother doesn’t want to help or console her in this difficult situation and is again leaving for her own goals. As much as she hates her for leaving in the past, some part of Appu’s heart still kept hoping that one day, her mother would show true love and care towards her instead of all the show-off.
The worst was her thoughts about her Khadus. She woke up early every morning, thinking she was still in K house. Her first thoughts were that Khadus would be leaving to work soon and she has to see him before he leaves and then she suddenly remembers where she is. She keeps waiting for him to tell her to focus and study. She finds herself looking at the clock constantly and waiting for him to come home from work so that she can fight with him for some reason or other. The most torturous part were the nights when she couldn’t fall asleep. When she was leaving, she even stole one of his nightshirts so that she could stuff the arm, pretending he was actually with her and try to keep him close. She even tried sleeping with her new teddy bear that her Khadus gifted her.
Flashback
As soon as she was done with her last exam, Kukki gang decided that they needed to celebrate after the long days of silence when Appu was studying. Since DK would not approve a budget for them, they decided to eat snacks and party in their favorite adda: Tom and Jerry’s room.
Shashank comes home a little late that day and looks anxious, only to find the chillar party in his room as he expected. He shakes his head in exasperation since he knows that nothing will change no matter what he says.
Noticing Shashank constantly looking outside his room, Kukki asks him what happened?
Shashank nervously: Kuch nahi Kukki, kya hoga. Finally iss shist ka exams complete hogay na tho mein relaxed hoon. (looks nervously outside again)
Seeing his gaze, Kukki slowly goes out the room and screams. Hearing his scream, the whole gang runs out of the room while Shashank sits down at his desk, holding his head waiting for the teasing.
Outside the room, Kukki found a cute light blue teddy bear that was at least 3 feet tall, with a small bow tied around its neck. The gang look at the teddy and at each other and looks towards the lovebirds with mischievous grins.
Appu on the other hand was delighted looking at the cute teddy and picks it up and run into the room towards Shashank with the gang staying behind but listening outside as usual.
Appu: ye mere liye hai?
Shashank (resigned to the teasings later, but smiling at Appu’s delight): haa…voh tumne itne dino se acche se study kiya aur exams bhi complete kiya tho socha tumare liye kuch gift lekar aao. Vese tho this is for kids, par tum bhi chotti bacchi ho na, isliye.
Appu (pouting): whatever, aaj mai bahut khush hu tho mujhe tumse fight nahin karna hai. Thank you! (hugging him quickly and tightly)
End of flashback
Later that night, she tried to sleep hugging her new teddy but gave up after an hour and went back to her favorite teddy instead. As she was leaving, she took his gift with her, resigned to having to use that to sleep instead but a lifeless object, no matter how cute and cuddly, was no replacement for her Khadus devil.
Dr.K and SA saw Appu over the past few days and felt helpless, not knowing how to make Appu understand and bring their kids back together.
2 days passed in this state with Appu and Shashank lost in their thoughts about each other, and their families observing their loved ones, unsure how to help.
After 2 days
Scene: at night in the K living room
They decided to wait for Shashank to do something over the past 2 days to bring back Appu, but now his leave was done and he would go back to work tomorrow. Impatient for their serious son to take action, Kanetkar's decided that after Shashank leaves for work, they would all go to Vartak house tomorrow without telling him and try to talk to Appu.
At the same time in Shashank room: his POV
Finally, everything is set. I don’t know if I’ll succeed in my plan or not, but I have to try for my love, for my Appu’s happiness. I’m sure she loves me too, or at least has some strong feelings for me. Maybe with time, I can make her fall in love with me, but first I need to clear all these issues. And I have to be careful that this Kukki gang doesn’t find out about my plans, otherwise they will tease me endlessly for the rest of my life.
Looking at something in his hand and smiling broadly: Just tonight Apurva, kal mein sab kuch sahi kardungi aur meri Shist chitkin mujhe vapas miljayegi! Just wait and watch tumhare Khadus tumhare liye kya kya karega!

Scene: next day late morning, at Vartak house
Sarika Atya comes to Appus room to try and wake her up.
SA: Appu, wake up, mujhe bahut important kaam hai tumse.
Appu: I’m already awake Atti. I’ve been awake for a while now.
SA sees that Appu hasn’t slept properly and looks very tired, but refrains from making any comments. Instead, she diverts the topic.
SA: Acha Appu, mujhe tumse ek kaam hai. Meri ek friend ki beti ki engagement party hai Flower Park ke pass, par mujhe kuch kaam hai tho mujhe jaane me late hoga. Can you please go there for me? I promise, me jaldi tume join karungi.
Appu: Atti, aapki friend ki beti ki engagement party mein mujhe kya kaam? Mujhe bilkul bhi interest nahin hai.
SA: Please Appu, voh meri bahut close friend hai par meri ek bahut important meeting hai jo mei reschedule nahin kar sakti. Like I said, I will join you soon. Par abhi keliye tum jao na vaha, please.
Appu: groaning with annoyance; Ok fine. Par mein vaha sirf 30 mins rukungi, no more than that.
SA: Acha ok, no problem. Chalo, meine tumhare liye kapde ready rakha hai, please wear that when you go.
Appu: annoyed; Aur kuch Ms.Sarika Vartak?
SA: Bilkul nahin Mrs.Apurva Kanetkar. Jaldi karo! Mein tumhare breakfast lati hu.
SA leaves the room and Appu gets up to ready herself for the party. As Appu leaves the house, Sarika makes a call.
SA: smiling; First step done!
A few minutes after Appu leaves, the door bell rings. SA opens the door to find the whole Kanetkar famiily at their door! (For all of our sanity, let’s pretend that Anjali Vartak left to US already after Appu came back.)
SA: aap sab log yeha? please come in!
Dr.K: Kon hai Sarika? after seeing K family aap sab, please aayie!
The family sits and after basic pleasantries, they signal each other to talk.
Dr.K: Sarika, Appu ko bula tho.
SA: Dada, meine Appu ko bhar bheja.
DK: kya? voh hum log actually Appu se baat karne keliye aaye. Dekhiye Dr Saab, hum sab chahte hai ki Appu aur Shashank ek saath khush rehe. Humne dekha hai ki Shashank Appu ke bina khush nahin hai.
Dr.K: Appu bhi khush nahin hai Dada. Pichle kuch dino se vo bhas khoyi khoyi rehthe hai. Doesn’t eat properly and hasn’t been sleeping well either.
Sua Aai: Isliye tho humlogon ne socha ki hum sab Appu ko samjhakar usse vapas leke jaate hai.
SA: Voh nahin ayegi.
Everyone is shocked, including Dr.K.
Dr.K: Sarika, yeh tum kya bol rahi ho?
SA: Sach Dada, right now Appu won’t go back, even though she wants to. Dada, aap 2 din se busy thi issliye mene aapko bhi nahin bataya. Actually, mein bhi Appu ko samjhane ki koshish kar rahi thi.
SA tells them all about her conversation with Appu in the garden, but leaves out about Shashank listening in. After listening to SA, everybody has tears in their eyes.
Amey: Hum log janti thi ki Appu bohot sensitive hai, aur vo uski aai ki vajhase bohot hurt bhi hai. Par itna affected hai ki pyaar karne se bhi darti hai, I didn’t know.
Mansi: Hum sab uske saath thi iss ek saal me uski fear ko nahi nikal payi.
Mai: Shayad humari pyaar mein kuch kami thi, ki Appu ko bharosa nahin hua hum par.
DK: Shayad hum log usse apna nahin bana payi.
Dr.K: Nahin! Galti aap saab ki nahin hai. Galti meri hai. Uski mom ki jaane ke baad, meine pura focus Appu ki future ko secure karne me lagadi kyunki uski care keliye Sarika thi ghar mein. But I forgot ki meri beti ko security ki nahi uski papa ki zarurat thi. Shayad agar meine uspar thoda zyada focus lagatha tho uske man mein itna dar nahin hota.
SA: Aur mein aapne toote hue ghar and apni beti ke baare mein soch thi rahi. Appu ki khyal tho rakha par uski dil, uski maan nahin samjha.
Kukki: Bas! Jo hogaya so hogaya! Right now, sirf Appu important hai. Hum log yeha Appu aur Shashank ko milane keliye aayi thi par right now, Appu ke darr aur insecurities mitana zyada important hai. Appu hai kaha?
Sumi: Aur hame ye baat Dada ko bhi batana hoga. Hum log kuch bhi kare par jis tarahse Appu Dada ki baat sunti hai na, vesa kisi ki nahin sunti. Dada hi usse sabse acche se samjha sakte hai.
Nikhil: Ha yeh correct hai. Mein Shashank ko phone karta hu and usse immediately yeha bulata hu.
SA: Arey ruko ruko! Uski koi zarurat nahin hai! Shashank ko sab kuch bata hai!
Everyone: KYA?
SA: Haa, actually jab Appu mujhse yeh saab bhol rahi thi, tho Shashank ne bhi sunliya. Voh actually Appu se baat karne keliye aaya tha par ye saab sunkar chup chap chala gaya.
KukkI: ek minute! Ye saab tho 2 din pehle huya na? Matlab isliye Shashank de 2 din chutti li office se?
Amey: Par kya faida Kukki? Voh phirse office chala gaya na, bin kuch kare!
SA: laughing. Shashank office nahin gaya hai. Voh Appu ke saath hai.
Everyone: APPU KE SAATH?
SA: Voh actually, kal mujhe Shashank ka phone aaya tha aur usne kaha ki mein kuch bhi bahana banakar Appu ko aaj Flower Park ke paas vaali venue pe bhejdu. Issliye meine Appu ko meri friend ki beti ka engagement ka bahanase vaha bheja. Aap sab ki aane se thodi dher pehle hi gayi ha voh.
Nikhil: Vah! Mere Saale saab tho chupa rustom nikla re! Hum sab se kaha ki voh office jaraha hai aur yeha Appu ko surprise karne ke plan mein hai!
SA: Surprise nahin shayad propose. Usne actually Appu keliye outfit bhi bheja aur kaha ki Appu ko ussi outfit mein bheju!
Everyone starts cheering, happy to know that Shashank will convince his wife!
Kukki: Ab toh hum logon ko yeh dekhna hi padega! Chalo sab log!
DK: Are ye! Kaha chalo? Thodi sharam varam hai ki nahin?
Kukki: Are Dada, sharam gayi tel lene! It’s up to you guys ki aana hai ki nahin. Par humari Kukki gang tho definitely jarahi hai.
Nikhil: Ha aur nahin tho kya. Day 1 se hum sab ne in dono ko milane ki kitni koshih ki! We are the true #Shappu supporters.
DK: Shappu?
Sumi: Shashank aur Appu matlab Shappu. couple name hai.
Amey: Voh sab chodo, hum logon ko dekhna hai indono ko finally milte hue.
Sua Aai: Dada, mujhe bhi jaana hai.
DK: Suvarna, tum bhi!
Sua Aai: Are nahin Dada, dekho Shashank ese serious mode ke bhar kuch kare esa tho kabhi nahin hota. Mujhe bhi apne beta ko esa free aur khush dekhna hai, please.
Panna; Aur kya pata, Appu Shashank ki baat se bhi nahin mani tho?
Mai: Ha, ye bhi sahi hai, agar Appu nahin mani tho hum sab usse tabhi samjha sakthe hai.
SA: Sach kahu tho mujhe bhi dekhna hai Shashank ka proposal. Matlab ye dono ek durse se pyaar karte hai we all know, par unki confession live dekhne mein mazza hi kuch aur hoga.
Kukki: Dekha! Sabki man ki baath bhaar agayi na. Chalo na Dada. Ye last time hai promise. Ek baar in dono ki beech confession ho jaya phir Kukki gang bhi inke picha nahin karegi.
Kukki gang: Pakka Promise.
DK: Acha ok, par koi Shashank ko disturb nahin karega aur jitni jaldi hosake hum log vapas ayenge. Un dono ko akele tho rehne dho!
Everybody leaves to venue to reach as soon as possible!
Meanwhile, Appu reaches the venue as directed by SA. But when she reaches the garden, she doesn’t see anyone there but one kid who hands her a card and leaves.
“Find your way to the center for a brighter future”
The 10 words were all that was written on the card. No name, no signature, and no clue as to who gave it to her. But somewhere, Appu knew who this could be. The famous saying is “curiosity killed the cat” and Mrs. Apurva Vartak Kanetkar is one of the most curious persons in the world, so she took the the bait as her curiosity got the best of her.
She followed through the maze that was the garden, meeting many dead ends but instead of dismay at getting lost, she kept getting more and more excited to see what lay at the end. Finally, after many dead ends and reroutes, she reached the center to find a beautiful gazebo surrounded by four 8 ft tall hedges spaced around it with just enough space between each hedge for two people to fit. It was so out in the open and yet closed enough to have privacy. There were rose petals on the ground leading from the hedge into the gazebo.
The gazebo was another beauty altogether. It was neither too big nor too small, enough space for a couple to have privacy without being crammed together. The four pillars of the gazebo were covered with rose vines climbing all across them meeting at the pinnacle of the roof on the outside. The 3 small steps leading into the gazebo had small candles lit on each side along with the rose petals. Inside the gazebo, in a corner, was a quaint little table with two chairs beside each other.
Appu was mesmerized looking at the setup and her heartbeats rose in tempo in both excitement and anxiety as to what this could mean. She continued to walk into the gazebo and couldn’t stop looking around herself. Suddenly, she felt a rain of chocolates fall upon her. Different different variaties of chocolates, all her favorites, fell like an endless stream. So much so that she started to feel like she was in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Appu got lost in the surprise that she didn’t see someone walking towards her until a hand slid around her waist and heard a small whisper in her ear: “pasand aya?”
Appu turned around to reply but felt speechless at the view in front of her. There was her husband dressed as she has never seen before! She’s seen him in formals when going to work, in traditional wear during festivals and functions, and completely relaxed at home in their room. But the view in front of her now felt like out of a fairy tale. Appu couldn’t stop staring at her handsome husband dressed to kill in black pants and a tucked in skyblue button up shirt with the top button open, not to mention the matching belt and shoes and of course his forever Chasma!
Seeing Appu unable to stop staring at him, Shashank’s grin was slowly increasing but as he got a good look at his wife, he got lost as well. No matter what she’s wearing, his wife was always cute, even in her sleepwear, but he was very careful when selecting her outfit. When he finally decided, he couldn’t stop imagining her, but the reality was so much better. The netted skyblue saree with a slim gold trim across the borders and the gold sleeveless blouse gave off a royal look when he saw it online which is why he got it. But now, seeing his beautiful wife in the attire, he couldn’t decide if she was looking cute or hot! His grin widened when he realized that she was wearing those half-moon earrings he gave her as her first gift from him, all those months ago. Seeing his wife lost in him and seeing her wear those earrings relieved him of all the nervousness he felt for the past 2 days and he grew more confident to take the next step.
Shashank: Apurva! Esa kyu dekh rahi ho? Tumne kaha tha na, couples should wear matching clothes. It’s the new trend, hai na? Isliye maine hum dono ke kapde same color ki li.
Appu suddenly notices that she is indeed matching with her husband and her heartbeats pick up again on hearing that he remembered her wishes from so long ago!
Shashank: Mujhe pata tha ki ee saree tumpe bahut acchi lagegi. You always look beautiful but today, in the saree of my choice, tum aur bhi beautiful lag rahi ho.
Shashank comes close to Appu, holding her left hand in his right hand and sliding his left hand to her waist. On seeing Appu still lost, he starts to feel happy that he finally managed to make his crazy wife speechless.
On feeling Shashank’s touch, Appu finally comes out of the shock and starts to realize what’s happening.
Appu: Tum yeha? Yeha kya kar rahi ho? And what is all this? Atti ne mujhse kaha ta ki-
Shashank: Ki unki friend ki beti ka engagment hai. I know. Maine Sarika Atya ko esa bolne ko kaha. So that I can have you here with me like this.
Appu: Par kyu? Mein tumari life se chali gayi na? Like we decided to before, tho yeh sab kyu?
Shashank: Because I don’t want to loose you. Aur life hum dono ki hai na. Tho tum akele itna bada decision kese le sakthi ho? We need to talk properly, bina koi arguments kiye. Chalo, come sit here with me.
Appu, after fighting with her brain and heart, decides to follow him so that she can at least savor these moments for now and deal with the consequences later. They go to sit on the chairs by the table in the corner. To Appu, it felt like they were in their own world where nobody else and nothing else existed.
Shashank: iss pehle ki hum humare bara baath kare, I want to clear something with you. Netra nahin meri girlfriend aur nahin mere mann mein uskeliye koi bhi feelings hai. She is just my assistant and my wife’s elder cousin. Usse zyada kuch nahin, samjhi?
Appu just continues to stare at Shashank, relief and happiness brewing inside her at his words but her fears refuse to let her fully understand. Seeing that he has her full attention, Shashank continues.
Shashank: Mere maan mein sirf ek insaan keliye feelings hai aur vo hai meri pyaarsi wife. Mujhe ye one year wala contract nahin nibhana hai. I want to stay with you as true husband and wife, forever. Ghar vapas chalo mere saath?
Appu was torn between listening to her heart that was telling to her go or to her mind that was telling her to step back now before the memories turn bitter. Shashank waited patiently for her response. He wanted to know how much power her fears had, even in the face of his indirect confession.
(What he didn’t know what that their families were waiting for her reply too. They had just arrived when he was asking her and conveniently hid behind the hedges to bear witness to their conversation.)
After a few minutes, Appu finally speaks up but only to refuse Shashank.
Appu: Nahin, humne pehle decide kiya tha ki yeh shaadi sirf ek saal keliye hogi. And you promised me that you would let me go. Tho phir ye saab kyu?
Shashank sighed realizing that she is hiding her true feelings again, so he decides to go with Plan B instead.
Shashank: You know what? 2 din pehle mein Vartak house aya tha…to talk to you. Par vaha aake maine tumari baathe suni. Vah baathe jho tum apni Atti se kar rahi thi.
Shocked, Appu rises from her chair, looking for an escape route.
Shashank: sochna bhi mat. sighing, he holds both of her hands in his tightly, refusing to let her runaway from him again. Apurva, education sabkuch nahin hota hai. Acchi life keliye bahut zaruri hai, but education se zyaada important bahut sari qualities hai. And you have those! No amount of studying could ever teach a person to be like you. Tumhari tarah pure and innocent and loving koi nahin hai. Don’t ever compare yourself with others, even me!
Appu: This is all nice to hear but hum dono bahut alag hai!
Shashank: Exactly! Hum dono bahut alag hai, issliye tho hum ek saath perfect hai. And that’s why our families wanted us together. Jaha me zyaada serious hu vaha tumari bindass nature mujhe control karti hai. Jaha tum padayi chor hu, vaha meri kitabi keeda kaam ata hai. Agar mein professional life mein gold medal hu na, toh personal life mein tume toh diamond medal milne chayi, because logon ko kaise apna banate hai, yeh tumse zyaada better koi nahin janta. Aur ha, hum donome similarities bi bahut hai. Hum dono keliye sabse zyada important hai humari families. Unke keliye hum kuch bhi karsakte hai….. Tumne Yin & Yang ke baare mein kabhi suna hai? We are like that. Separated, hum dono incomplete hai, but together, ek durse ki kamiya puri karte hue, ek perfect complete circle bante hai.
Listening to his words, Appu starts to tear up, truly believing him, but fear has a way of overpowering all other senses.
Shashank: Aur rahi family…matlab Kanetkar family ki baat hai tho, they all love you the most, shayad mujhse bhi zyada. Tum tho sab ki ladli ho, especially Kukki. Tume bata hai, humari first meeting se…actually tumse milne se pehle se, Kukki tume rajkhanya bulata ta. Sab tumse bohot pyaar karte hai. No one’s doing any favors on you.
Appu: Ok, manti hu sab mujhse pyaar karte hai. But what about the future? Mein sabse alag hu, main misfit hu iss family mein. Aur main nahin chathi ki meri wajah se kisi ko bhi embarrass fell ho ya meri wajah se kisi ko bhi sharmindagi ho. Because ye feelings mujhe sabse door kardegi. Issliye, let’s end this here. Tumne kaha tha ki tumare aur Rani Tai ke beech kuch nahin ha, Ok I agree. Par tum apne liye aur apne family keliye koi esa dundo jo perfect fit ho. Main sab ko nahin kho sakti.
Crying, Appu pulls herself away from Shashank and is about to run out of there, ignoring his calls behind her. But luck favored Shashank tonight, as she was stopped short, seeing her entire family blocking her exit. She looked to see that everyone has tears in her eyes and a sympathetic smile on their face. Her mind was telling to push past everyone and leave but her feet felt rooted to the spot. She was vaguely aware of her husband coming to stand behind her.
Sua Aai moved first and trapped Appu in a warming hug and after a few seconds, Appu returned her hug breaking down in her arms. Mai and Babi Atya came forward, laying their own hands on Appu’s head and back. After a few minutes amidst the motherly love, Appu gathered herself and looked at the family surround her.
Panna: Appu, Sarika tai ne hame sab kuch bataya.
Mai: Hum saab tumse bahut pyaar karte hai Appu. Ese darr apne mann mein math rakho.
DK: Appu, janta hu ki tumare mann mein bahut darr hai aur ye darr asani se nahin jayegi. Issliye mein tumse bas ek sawal puchungi. Kya tume hum sab par bharosa hai?
Appu: Of course Dada Kaka. Mujhe app sab par poora bharosa hai.
DK: Toh uss bharosa par bharosa karo aur vapas chalo. Hum sab na tume janne denge aur nahin hum kahi jayenge.
Sua Aai: Ha hum tume datenge zaroor, par sirf tumhari galati par.
Babi Atya: Aur discipline bhi karenge, kyunki uske bina toh tum padayi bilkul nahi karogi.
Mai: Par isse humara pyaar kabhi kum nahin hoga.
Vittu Dada: Aur mujhe meri singing partner bhi tho chaye.
Sumi: Appu, hum tumhe kabhi nahin chodenge.
Nikhil: Tumne mujhe apna bhai mana na, tho main apni ek lauti behen ko kaise chodu.
Kukki: We’ll prove it to you Appu ki hum sab hamesha saath rehenge ladte jhagadte khushi khushi.
Appu stands speechless overwhelmed by the love she was receiving. She feels Shashank holding both of her arms in a side hug. For once, Appu feels like she’s safe enough to let go of her mask of happiness. For once, she wants to be selfish enough to take in as much love as possible. For once, she decided to fight her fears and value the love she was getting instead. Too emotional to say anything, all she could do was nod towards Sua Aai standing directly in front of her.
Her unspoken concession was all that was needed to rid the air of the blanketed tension. Especially for her father and aunt, who were standing to the side, more relieved than ever to know that their princess will always be in safe, loving hands.
Amey: Are chalo ghar, celebrate karte hai!
Shashank: Ek minute! Aap sab jaye, hum dono baad mein aathe hai. Mujhe Apurva se akele mein baath karni hai.
Kukki gang: OH!!! AKELEEE??
Shashank: Ha akele. Aur bina aap logon ki chup chup ke sunna. Babi Atya, please aap iss Kukki gang ko leke jao!
Babi Atya: Shashank is right. Hum sab chalte hai ghar aur inn dono ko akele rehne dethe hain.
After much hugs and take cares from everyone and teasings from Kukki gang, Shashank and Apurva were left alone again in the garden. And this time, they were truly alone, in a private world of their own. Appu was still in Shashank’s arms, staring at each other, unsure if this was a dream or an even more beautiful reality.
Note: I basically had to use this chapter to resolve all the issues set up in the first two parts so that we can have nothing but romance and cuteness in the rest of the story.
