Finished watching Gangubai finally.

Definitely a career defining role for Alia and she nailed it. Bhansali makes a lot of grandiose films where his heroines are shown with swords or guns but mostly end up just being cosmetic ornaments....lol.....but this whole movie revolves around Gangubai orchestrating things so in that sense Alia lucked out way more than Bhansali's other muses whose main job is to just look pretty and dance while politics swirl around them😆.

I think it really helped the film that the plot was all centralized in one location of those lanes of Kamathipura.....unlike other recent SLB films that tried to cover a variety of locations/backdrops.....here you are just consumed by the world of Kamathipura - the trials, tribulations, the politics all centralized and it helps anchor the narrative better.

Bhansali can dress up a lot of things in his films with grand costumes, makeup, songs etc....but if you don't have the raw material in you, it will show.....Alia was dismissed so much as baby-faced when this movie was announced but she shows her power as an actor at multiple points in the film - of particular note are the Azad Maidaan speech she gives and her confrontations with Razia bai....she was quite good in her scenes with Ajay Devgan's character too - very effective use of a cameo there by Bhansali. All of the supporting cast was well used - made their impact in barely 1-2 scenes also. Who would have guessed that baby-faced Alia ends up being believable as a matriarchal figure in this story too with the way she's shown caring for the women of her brothel as well as their children. Shantanu did quite well in his role too with that tragic brief romance he gets with Gangu.

I guess what I liked was that after a long time I saw a Bhansali movie that had a tight narrative...it wasn't meandering around or abruptly jumping narrative wise in a jerky manner.

Thank you so much for the review yaar..am so pumped I so want to watch and hearing only and only good things and now it has your seal of approval too toh m even more excited 🥳

Just watched this IV today....it's better enjoyed after watching the movie cuz they talk about some scenes in detail that connect better after watching the film......for example the telephone call to Gangu's mom was another brilliant performance from Alia.

I do agree with SLB's point about the power in Alia's eyes making her apt for this role.....the contrast of her petite frame with the power she is able to convey from her eyes - and I'm not talking typical power....there were many shades of power over the course of the story.....that is what Alia nailed in the role. But yeah she is justifiably happy after the high praise from SLB who's calling her his current fav. actor and hailing this as one of the all time memorable performances of Indian cinema😆

Bookmarking it all..I am seriously loving all the praise for the film and alia and whatever screenshots and tweets am watching they are hard-hitting ..I am so happy Alia got to show her acting chops and this is the jawab in a way to those who always target her for being Kjo's fav girl and go overboard In targeting her. Yes she is privileged but she can also act and I am even happier to know she cleared our doubts too with her good performance and ended up being such a perfect Gangu

I was just marveling at this IV that the girl who debuted like some kind of vapid barbie only obsessed with pretty clothes and makeup, the girl who was labeled national idiot after her KWK fiasco😆.....that girl has emerged as an actor with more grit than any of us could have imagined. SLB is credited with making many actors come into their own through his films....whether it was DP, Ranveer and even PC with her iconic performance as Kashi......but in Alia's case, I feel she was already a confident actor before she got around to working with SLB. In DP's case it always felt like she took time to find herself with SLB but in Alia's case, that born raw talent comes through more clearly and only got more polished in SLB's hands....and SLB speaks to that point in this IV too that Alia's cinematic sense as an actor is more evolved - she is able to throw herself into a scene without losing awareness of her surroundings.....the example he gave was that if he throws an ace at her, she throws three aces back at him😆.....and I can kinda believe it cuz in some scenes in the film, she really manages to achieve that goosebumps wala effect.

Half of it toh we know SLB can create from the atmosphere he sets in every movie only....but the reason I really enjoyed this movie was that even as all the regular Bhansali touches of handpainted curtains, set decor, costume details were all there, it is Alia's PERFORMANCE that holds your attention in every frame that she is in....she owns it in every sense of the word. She is able to tap into the pathos somehow without looking artificial....you feel every emotion she wants to convey as Gangu without getting into typical hysterics. It is deffo lovely to see Alia continuing to evolve as an actor.

Me too yaar me too.. this fil really is looking and sou ding so special.. the girl was more tha just the shallowness barbie image and she showed the flashes of that in parallel to her more glamorous roles earlier too be it highway , udta Punjab or raazi . Each one of those special for different reasons.. and the best part is she has evolved with each one of those one can actually see her graph and an actor with each film a little more maturity and polishedness so it is great to see ke slb get to work qirh her and guide her more to use her talent in the right direction caz in the mid she has been given a bad deal with films like kalank which were all over and had the potential. Word about SLB making or breaking many actors and am more glad to know he made a good film after the disaster that was padmavat and is hyped as oata nahi kya I also feel this gave slb something different t warna ek haise film in historical warriors was rusting his talent qnd everything was starting to look same but this gave him a refresher to refresh his own talent and passion which could have been seen in the trailer too alia seems to be great at grasping the cues and what is the demand from her.. but she is still raw and new toh she does depend on the cues jaosa kaam karwaoge de degi

+1 to this point....I also feel he was getting saturated making the same typical rinse/repeat historical/pseudo historical fiction.....Gangubai has helped break that cycle a bit and brought grit to his direction again after the last few meandering ones he made. Dunno if he will continue to build on this or go back to making another typical looking royal historical film again😆.....Time will tell.

Ok aaj ke KKIS mein finally they got Anu out of that ugly red sherwaani😆

Muh dikhaai rasam do minute mein nipta ke koi pagphere ki rasam ki preps shuru kar di Ks ne....lol Anu got to change into a blue kurta for this but aaj toh aur bhi morose/rone waali haalat mein tha sitting stone-faced through the rasams.....lol they showed him singing Tujhse naraaz nahin zindagi after family waale force him to sing🤣....and they showed him getting FBs of putting sindoor on both girls while singing this🤣....full parody feel tha us scene ka.....lol

Then finally he got news of Dr. R ki death and bhaag gaya phir se rasams beech mein chhod ke🤣.....again Ks were clueless about when he disappeared and baad mein baith ke whining as usual ki yeh kaise gaayab ho gaya THIRD time in 24 hours😆

They showed more of Gun ka breakdown over her father's death in the hospital and she's refusing to let people take away his dead body....bechaari ekdum adhmari si ho gayi hai ro ro ke......when Anu reached the hospital, the doctors ki team again berated him for leaving his wife alone in such a haal to go party....lol they were like your changed clothes show ki tum functions attend karke aa rahe ho while your wife is in this state😆.....toh Anu was like dard dil mein hota hai, kapdon mein nahin🤣....or something to that effect....lol full clownery feel aata hai mujhe iske har dialogue se ab😆

Bottom line is that he can't be bothered giving a damn about RKC....usko muh pe sunaa raha hai k don't expect me to obey you like some slave - I will do what I feel is right.....she's whining and trying to gather sympathy but her fakeness is pretty obvious for anyone who's seen through her....lol senior Ks will remain fools indefinitely.

Precap mein Anu comes to console Gun and kinda half confesses that he loves her....oh and ho gaya AnuGun hug😆.....side se RKC bhi pahunch gayi hug witness karne🤪😆

Anu ke jo haal lag rahe hain based on this epi, it's hard to imagine him leaving Gun by herself even for a moment after all this....but let's see kal kya nazaare dikthe hain.....lol....RKC will deffo throw tantrums to demand the senior Ks scold Anu and get him to stay with her but Anu lagta nahin kisi ki baat zyada sunega....bas token gestures milenge max.

I am so bummed that Dr R passed away - and what did you guys think of gungun’s reaction and acting when she hears the news? I thought she did ok but then I saw Yeshu was trolled for her performance? I didn’t agree to that….

But coming back to the story - I did manage to see the precap - so we will have to get ready for RKC screaming and throwing a tantrum about the hug 🤪 what I want to see is Ks reaction to the news that Dr R is no more.. will they show some logical sense?😆😆

Timing ka toh kya hi kehna ofcourse the best time to confess/ half confess is whe her father has died and she is devastated..though I do like Gun ka again ke bhai main toh nahi bulati toh why impose yourself on me and baar baar aa Jana? Control khudse nahi hota anubav se and that is obvio with his dil toots mode but plz stop marooing lines like dard dil main hota hai 😆 kitna dard hai dilj gaya jab tum muh utha ke shaadi kar li uss ladki se jo tumse 2 sec bardasht nahi hoti . I thought Yesha did just fine with her acting for Gun's breakdown on hearing about Dr. R's death....she's acting as per her character - whatever we've been shown of Gun till date....she reacts and cries like a kid....shuru se hi aisa hai so dunno logon ko kya naya dikh raha hai that they think is such bad acting.....lol anyways is show ke trollers toh main hardly seriously leti hoon.....

Re: precap....yeah RKC gonna lose her shit on seeing that hug....lol Anubhav is already so overwhelmed with his emotions for Gun and abhi toh shaadi ka day one hi hai😆....aage kya haal honge, bhaisaab? Ks are total losers in the story now so I don't have much expectation regarding their reaction to Dr R's death also......these losers went back to doing rasams happily even after hearing that he got a major heart attack....in logon ko kya farak padega uski death se. They are only obsessed with their hollow lectures on sanskaar.

Would be hilarious if Ks also get to witness the AnuGun hug😆....or if RKC goes and complains to them about AnuGun hug, Anu may burst out with the truth of half-shaadi😆. Matlab jo haal chal rahe hain currently, it seems hard to hide AnuGun ki shaadi or Anubhav's feelings for Gun for very long.....lol
