(Ram's mom died when would've been 12(?), VK met Nandini when Ram must've been 15(?), Nandini was a young and beautiful wife (25-27yrs), then Shubhu and Shivi were born and VK died when Ram was 18/19 ie in college)

It's just Nandini's bad luck - she married for a life of comfort and luxury, but ended up widowed and poor. Ram had to rebuild the empire from scratch.
