Nope. Sorry. I completely disagree here.
First of all the premise that he was talking about recent times sounds like a very weak public relations cover up. But even if he was, how the hell does one not count the Balkan war? Over 100000 Muslims were massacred. There were mass rapes of Muslim women by Serbian soldiers. Over 2 million displaced. It was a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions. How in the four letter word does a grow ass prince who is on the verge of becoming a crown prince and a statesman not think of the Balkan war? To borrow his own words, it happened so close to him. His own mother was in Bosnia as part of a Land Mines Survivors network right before her death. Give me a break.
Yes, this statement was absolutely 100% racist. In the same way that all those reporters or even government officials in the past two weeks have been racists. All the talks about this war being different because this is a different civilization than Iraq and Afghanistan, and these blonde hair blue eyed refugees are not Muslims. They are all, including William, looking at this from the lens of this is happening to our own people and not those dark skinned people in Asia or Africa. That’s racist.
Should we do a quick history course of what role Europe has played in the wars of Middle East and Africa? There is a reason these regions have been volatile in recent decades and Europe is a huge part of that, of not the main reason.
Bold: That is an extreme extrapolation. By that logic every other thing we say in our daily life is racist and sexist. We can call him ignorant at most, but he's in no way being racist here. Racism is a serious allegation, and we cannot dub someone as a racist unless they say it with full racist intentions.
Apparently a video has been released to prove Wills didnt say the above. Wonder who manipulated his words like this.

William said, "Everyone is horrified by what they are seeing. It's really horrifying. The news every day, it's just, it's almost unfathomable. For our generation, it's very alien to see this in Europe. We're all right behind you. We're thinking about you. We feel so useless."
Nobody manipulated his words. It was in fact the OFFICIAL Royal Correspondent Richard Palmer who reported ALL of the above to PA (Press Association) who are the ONLY agency in the world to gain FULL ACCESS to royal engagements.

The story INCLUDING the "comments" was published by first of course PA, and then subsequently by The Mail, The Mirror, Metro... it was then tweeted by Nadine White.

I disagree again with your take on this. I do not believe that it’s an extreme extrapolation to suggest that when he said wars don’t happen in Europe he meant wars only happen with Africans and Middle Easterners. That’s like saying crimes only happen in black neighborhoods. Isn’t that racist?
Racism doesn’t have to be overt for it to be racism. Subtle or implied racism can be even more dangerous because a lot of people will let it go and it festers and spreads in society.
There’s also his history of comments about Africa’s population and conservation of wild life. Dude is racist.

His generation were teenagers, high school students when the Balkan war happened, so he’s full of it right there. Also he has a degree in geography so shouldn’t he be more informed about what happened to Yugoslavia? Most importantly, as I said above, stating that things like wars don’t happen to us has a solid implication that it happens to “those people.”
Is ignorance synonymous with racism?
Irrespective, of whether he mentioned Africa or Asia or not, Prince William's statement is prejudiced and ignorant. It conveniently forgets the violent and bloody history of Europe. The two world Wars were mostly fought in Europe. Ever since the wars Eastern Europe and the Balkans have been embroiled in some sort of perpetual conflict.
Don't get me wrong, I am pissed off at how ignorant and prejudicial William is being - but is he a racist? That's a serious accusation.
You might argue that racism is a form of prejudice and that his perception that it is unusual to see violent conflict in Europe (which is predominantly white) is racist. And I agree, the statement is racist or has racial undertones.
But, I ask, does making one racially prejudiced statement make a person racist?
I think we all have some misguided perceptions due to how media presents the world. Violence and conflict in predominantly poc nations are highly exaggerated, vilified, and presented as a problem inherent within the peoples and nation. Violence and conflict in predominantly white nations are downplayed, glossed over, and presented as a result of happenstance or other issues. So much so that even poc folks think violence and conflict are normal for their countries but unusual for white countries.
If a person of color from a region of wartorn conflict expresses surprise over violence in Ukraine - is that person racist? Yes, there may be some internalized racism because of perceptions but it is not intentional or malicious.
I feel that sometimes accusations of racism are thrown very arbitrarily. Sometimes people make prejudicial statements or racially biased statements not because they actually are racists but because the worldview they have been provided in their sheltered life is flawed. If a person sticks to their worldview and believes European nations or white people are inherently better than other nations or people of color then they are racist. But if a person acknowledges their limitations and is open to learning and bears no bias or ill-will to people then they are not racist. I believe that people deserve at least one chance to show they can be better before being labeled a racist.
That being said no one should be obligated or expected to show understanding to someone who has hurt them. And it is perfectly fine to hold a Prince to a higher standard of scrutiny than the average Joe. But in my opinion, being a racist is being a really shitty human being, and its quite a loaded thing to accuse someone off. There are indeed racists in this world and its fine to label them as such - but jumping the gun to label people able and willing to learn and change as racists just burns bridges and sets the world on fire.
If he means Western Europe has mostly been at peace during his lifetime, he's correct.
Europe hasn't been. I mean, Crimea was annexed only a few years ago. Eastern Europe hasn't seen peace since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Not to mention the horrifically violent history of Europe all over until the end of WWII.
He's clearly ignorant, which we would not want in someone in his position. It's also prejudiced. But racism is a different animal, involving belief in superiority of one race and acting on it. I mean, Bollywood frequently talks about Indian women and their superiority over other women. Is that racist?
The other issue is are we ever going to see a point where humans are not judged by whether we see themselves in them? Highly doubt it. I'll be honest. While my heart breaks for the moms and kids in Ukraine, it would break a little harder if they (God forbid) were Indian. I don't think I'm racist for it.
"Everyone is horrified by what they are seeing. It's really horrifying. The news every day, it's just, it's almost unfathomable. For our generation, it's very alien to see this in Europe. We're all right behind you. We're thinking about you. We feel so useless."
If that's all he said and didn't mention any other continents, how's he racist?
