Chapter 96

Another Way

Abhay made sure to look his best for Maithili’s unexpected invitation. A look of civility, not at all. Hands and lips dripping with the blood of her kind, eyes cold and lacking of soul, all to just remind her that he wasn’t here to play games. He really wished he could kill her himself, right there, right at this very moment. She sent a message to him through the last Vitael he fought, uttered by the latter right before Abhay ripped his heart out of his chest. He didn’t tell anyone where he was going, only that he had to attend to something important. To the back of Pandher palace she beckoned him, before the decaying throne. Abhay thought this place would be filled to the brim with her kind, but it was quiet and empty. Of course, it was too obvious a hiding spot, or maybe they already killed too many of them. Gusts of wind blew the charred pieces of drapes up into the air, to which he looked up and reminisced. Then faced with the two open doors, to the throne room, he looked straight ahead. There she was waiting. He stood there for a moment, then walked to the center. Maithili stared at him while seated, cheek on fist, and a mischievous smile played on her lips.

“Abhayendra. I didn’t think you would come here at all….color me surprised.” She crooned, stepping down to close their distance. With each step she took, the dirt, leaves, and ash on the floor cleared her path on their own.

“And I didn’t think you’d make yourself this vulnerable. What if I brought your death alongside me?”

“Death has no use with astral projections. Of course I wouldn’t come here with my real body.”

Her fingers reached for his shoulder, dancing them up and down his neck and arm. They passed under his eyes, as a look of worry passed over her. Abhay didn’t care to notice.

“You look…tired.”

He smiled and revealed bloodied teeth and fangs, snapping them together at her. Remnants of his lack of remorse for those who dared to harm his beloved.

“Tired? I feel great.” He said, leaning forward. Maithili shook her head and wiped some blood off his face with her thumb. He pushed her hand away, only smearing it more.

“Great? What makes you different from us then?”

“Only one of us wants to kill humans.”

“Ah….humans. Like the one you chose over me?” She walked around him in circles. “It hurts to be lonely, doesn’t it? I can see it in your eyes. The beastly you is trying to hide it.”

“Lonely?”

“How does it feel to see her suffer everyday? To ignore you for hours at a time? All day in your room, quiet and unmoving? It hurts, doesn’t it? Why upset yourself over a human who will die in a few years anyways?”

Abhay chuckled and shook his head at the floor.

“I can never be upset when I’m with her. And that’s why I will leave when she does. Our souls are bound, if you haven’t realized yet.” He crossed his arms after brushing away her hands again. “What did you gain from doing this?”

“Me? To convince you, of course. I’m here to make an offer. One you cannot refuse.”

“I’m not here to make a deal with the devil.”

“Devil? That’s a stretch. Then what are you? Bloodthirsty creatures like you are no less than I am. You’ve also killed. No one has clean hands. We are all the same, deep down.”

She took his bloodied hand and caressed it, gazing into his eyes. He turned away, and dropped it as soon as her hold loosened.

“You know Abhayendra, I missed you so much. Not only you, I missed my family so very much.” She tried to feign remorse, her voice choking up. Perhaps she even pretended to weep. He didn’t look. “I want that back. You, didi, Siddharth…I want you all back.”

“Perhaps you should have thought things through centuries back. You made your choices, now live with them.” He replied, teeth clenched with a hiss. Maithili burst into deranged giggles, and swung her arms back and forth.

“So you won’t come back? Even if I promise to give Piya her happiness back?”

“Happiness?” He questioned, raising an eyebrow.

“You know, her precious hearing. I hear musicians are nothing without it.”

Abhay clenched his fists and took a step away. Maithili took two steps forward.

“Come back to me, and I’ll return her hearing to her. Simple as that.”

He didn’t even need to think twice about it.

“No.”

“No? I thought you loved her.”

“I do. That’s why I refuse. What do you take me for, a fool?”

“Never Abhayendra!” She exclaimed, eyes wide and a finger over his lips. He brushed it away and glared. “Never.”

“I don’t make deals out of relationships. Unlike some….other people.”

Clearly implying her, Maithili fumed for a moment. But she collected and laughed to herself, took some deep breaths, and tilted her head to the side. Her smile sent chills up his spine.

“She will never hear again. Are you really okay with that?”

I’m not. But sacrificing myself would be idiotic and do nothing to relieve her pain.

“I’m sure there’s another way. One that you won’t tell me, or one that you don’t even know yourself. I’ll find something, don’t worry.”

“You won’t ask how I took it from her?”

“Will you tell me? No, right? You know what can happen if you reveal your cards. And I don’t want to waste my time here waiting for nothing.”

He already had a plan in mind. But for that, Maithili needed to die first. With a smirk and a turn of the heel, he made his departure from the palace once again.

——————————————————————————————————————————

“The flowers….why are they dying?”

During his return, Abhay decided to check on the flowers. He was worried that the chaos would lead to the flowers being harmed and leave the hill barren, which is why he requested to have the perimeter blocked to all except him and Piya. But it didn’t matter. Half of their flowers wilted and turned a dark grey and black at the edges. Rather than wilted, it looked as if they had been burnt.

Abhay examined each one. The petals fell off and fell just like the lone wilted one days ago, but now they crumbled into the soil like ash.

“This quickly? But it doesn’t make sense.” He wondered to himself, brows furrowed out of worry. “Your beautiful flowers, half gone.”

He wondered if it was Piya’s absence. But even then, they shouldn’t have died this quickly. Was it a sign? He wasn’t too sure.

A howl ripped through the skies, a few kilometers away. He made his second departure for the night, unable to notice a silvery white branch growing around the trunk of a tree. He wasn’t meant to see it anyways.

——————————————————————————————————————————

Piya shared company with little Vihaan in the study. The latter sitting in her lap, leaned over the piano keys, she stared off into space while he pressed them out of curiosity. They were alone in the house, while the fighting ensued outside. Battles hidden from the human realm. She wondered if anyone in town caught on to the strange happening, remembering Arnab for a brief moment and his interest in the supernatural. She shook her head, and looked down at Vihaan.

Look at us two, unable to fight, unable to talk. We turned out to be quite similar at the moment.

She worried for her family. She wanted to help them. She knew she could, but Abhay worried for her. She understood, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t somewhat selfish. She felt like she was going mad at times. Her hands touched her ears, choked back a sob, and stared at the front wall.

Something poked out of it, a translucent object that resembled a claw. The window turned black, and the glass shattered and burst forth towards them. Piya cradled Vihaan against her chest and dove down to the floor, crawling underneath the piano. He started to cry.

Paws struck the floor. Hiding was futile. A werewolf had become their guest, having burst through the window and wall, of an odd appearance and aura. A muzzle loomed near Piya’s face and barked. She shielded Vihaan from the snaps of its jaw, taking a closer look. It wasn’t the usual werewolf. It looked like an apparition of one, not a real one. Furs standing on end like flames, colored black and red at the tips. Its eyes…they were pure black orbs that reflected nothing. Absolutely nothing. Like a pool of darkness.

Between its eyes, a jagged crystal was embedded in the skin, just under the fur. Piya reached for it with her palm, thinking it to be the source of dark magic that made this wolf this way. She was told she was the key. She wanted to double check, just to make sure. When contact was made, the crystal shattered, and the unusual creature shrieked and convulsed on the floor. It only took a second for it to drop, unresponsive. Its flesh began to burn away slowly. Even the ash burned away, until nothing was left. Vihaan calmed down, and Piya checked him for injuries. The piano wasn’t as lucky, but nothing a repair service couldn’t fix.

Thanks for hiding us.

She crawled out from underneath, only to find a hand wrapped around her throat and her feet suddenly hovering in the air. The Vitael who commanded the werewolf came to finish the job with brute force only. Piya could only see her lips moving, but understood they didn’t move with kindness.

“You really are a nuisance…” she hissed.

Abhay broke the door open, lunging for the final blow on the standing Vitael before it harmed her. His fist dove into its chest, ripping out its heart. Piya fell to the floor, gasping for air, making sure that Vihaan would escape this unscathed. She looked up, and found Mandu angrily clawing his face into shreds, while Siddharth checked for more around the area.

So much blood. She was getting dizzy. It was strange seeing so much bloodshed without sound. Abhay caught her before she fainted, and helped her stand. She handed Vihaan off to Mandu.

Abhay rushed to get back home as soon as he felt the slightest disturbance. With a gentle kiss upon her head, he leaned his cheek against her hair and rocked her upon his feet. His palm was drenched with blood and the remnant tissues of the Vitael’s heart. He looked at it stoically. Piya shivered violently in his arms.

I’m sorry you had to see that, jaan. It’s okay now.

Piya backed away as Abhay destroyed the corpse. The flames didn’t touch the rest of the room or furniture. Only the flood and body. Not only did the house need urgent repairs, it needed to be warded to protect her and Vihaan. Piya went after Abhay into the bathroom, pulling his sleeve as he washed his face.

I want to help, Abhay. I can do it. Please? I want this to end. I want her gone and I want my hearing back! Please!

Abhay wiped his face with a towel and cupped her cheeks. She just escaped another close call with Death. But her eyes spoke volumes, the desire to find a way to fix everything with just her involvement. She was desperate. Her body shook and her eyes were wide and bloodshot. Her fingers ran through her hair, once then twice through. Sobs followed. It was tortuous, this silence. Abhay took a breath and held her tight in his arms. Soon, this would end very soon.

Okay.
