To give Dharani his due, Kuruvi is watchable in parts, for die-hard fans of Vijay. For ordinary viewers, the film lacks a basic story and stretches ones patience for nearly three hours. The first half has bits and shreds of Mask of Zorro when the lead pair meet and romance, comedy elements and mix-up scenes from The French Kiss and post interval it looks like the Telugu film Chatrapati. The story credited to Dharani looks dated, like an old 70's and 80's mass masala film. Where else can you show heroism in the form of the hero winning a car race, with an old jalopy, and then bursting into an introduction item song with the loser's girl? A big menacing villain, who can't shoot straight, good guy father swearing that his son will come and eliminate the baddies, and one of the villains smashing his head with a stone which many years later the hero uses to kill the same villain! Vetrivel (Vijay) alias Kuruvi is a happy go-lucky young man, who is a car racer. He lives on the banks of Cooum near a Metro rail station in a rickety old house, with his father's three wives including his mother and sisters. His father Singamuthu (Manivannan) a quarry worker in Cuddaph had mysteriously disappeared. One of his father's creditors tries to vacate Vetrivel and family. Due to his financial circumstances he is forced to go to Malaysia as a 'kuruvi' (courier), and also recover some money due to his father from Kocha (Suman), who had betrayed his father who discovered a rare diamond in the granite quarry. Kuruvi in his attempt to recover his dues ends up stealing Kocha's, precious diamond, and also wins the heart of his sister Devi (Trisha), who runs away with him to Chennai to avoid a marriage with her brother's henchman. The rest of the film is how Kuruvi goes to Cuddaph and discovers a slave camp run by Kocha and his associate Konda Reddy (Ashutosh), at the collieries and also finds his long lost father. Kuruvi turns into a 'Parunthu' (eagle) and single handedly takes on the mining mafia and finally annihilates them. The film has all your trademark superhero-movie elements- a larger-than-life hero, action scenes galore stretching for nearly 15 minutes per fight, punchlines like- 1. Pechu thaan silent, aana adikkira ovaru adiyum saravadi. (2) Idukium munnadi onnu varum, minnal athu 10,000 watts irukke, songs in exotic locations Thaen, Then…, watch out for Trisha's chiffon sari's and fantastic dancing by Vijay in the Mozha Mozhannu.. number. If you're looking for a tight, razor-sharp, edge-of-the-seat action thriller like Ghilli, you've got the wrong film. But of course, if Kuruvi is salvaged to some extent, it's thanks to Vijay's irresistible screen presence and his spontaneous approach to the character. Trisha fits the bill and her comedy scenes are good. However, the film is painfully long and unbearably tedious as it is a predictable fare and has absolutely no story to speak. Writer-director Dharani's sheer inability to set the tone of the film is evident.

Verdict:Run-of-the-mill

Okay...after reading the first review...I am glad I will give this movie a miss .. no time to join my bro n rest of the family😉 I have read another review from galatta....they have wrote Kuruvi is better than Ghilli...Trisha is the real heart-throb of Kuruvi and Kuruvi is an out-and-out Vijay extravaganza..so let us wait and see for the comments from poeple who have seen Kuruvi😃

irriestible screen presence? vijay? dude.. if you ask me which will i look at first? vijay or a dead oak tree, i'll definitely pick the dead oak tree because it just has more character to it.

neither does vijay have any screen presence nor does he have any ability to bring the characters to life. he is a total bore to watch. there've been exceptions though, like thirumalai but that's once in a blue blue BLUE moon.😆😆

i just hope my sister doesn't get one of her mad i-totally-have-to-watch-vijay-onscreen syndrome if not i'll be dragged to this film.😆😆

happy new year trisha! seems like your days are numbered in kollywood. but i know you'll survive.. you're a 'fighter' aren't you?😉

OK, be prepared for this review. Spoilers galore so if you don't want to be spoilt, please don't read.

Kuruvi is a vangoli (turkey). It has to be the worst film I have seen thus far in the 2007 - 2008 period, maybe longer. It is a toss between Bheema and Kuruvi as to which is the worst film but I think the dubious honour goes to Kuruvi. We had so much expectations from this film as we were promised that it was the Gilli team. Were we disappointed? Yes. Did we think that the money was well-spent? No. Any redeeming issues? Yes, Vivek's comedy. Trisha. Charanya.

Oh my God. It was a real bad film. Gratuitous violence from the beginning to the end. Use and abuse of children - my sister and I hated it. Whilst in his other films he used aruval, here it was the hatchet axes, the ones with short handle and really scary looking blades. Red was the prevalent colour.Even the music was nothing great - and that was usually a sure thing with Vijay's films.

Everyone, with the exceptions of those I said earlier, were simply awful. Ashish, Suman, the thugs who came as Suman's brother and Suman's head goonda - ayo, ayo, ayo. Poor Illavarasu and Manivannan. Kutty Pisasu (Kaveri) from Arase did nothing - in fact, you hardly noticed her.

Everything defied logic. Storyline, stunts, dialogues. Everything.

Gilli was enjoyable; Kuruvi was torturous. 😕

kathika, i have to agree with you. I was really looking forward to watch this movie, but did not enjoy this movie at all. Most of the story reminded me Gilli. Only difference is, this time Trisha follows him back to chennai...

But i would says the movie was funny. Evan at a critical scene, something funny do happen. Saranya, acting as the villans wife and SIL to trisha has done well. Besides, she looked preety with her long straight her compare to her Vel 😳 Trisha talks alot in this movie. Vivek did his part really well. His entrance trying to mimic one of Rajini's scne was funny 😆

Violence??? 😡 😡 Was really bad especially the ending scene.

But Karthi, i liked the fact they used the KLCC in certain scenes. And the dance in our LRT 😉 cun huh??

I liked the scene where Vijay mum tries to take suleke for trisha... 🤣 Velekenai 😆 😆 Songs, nothing much to say. Was okay. But i liked the last song as the dance was good.

Karthi, where did u watch it? I watched it at Collisium sat ngt 9.00 show. Were you there too...??

The non stop roller coaster ride - Kuruvi fails to live up the expectations as it was the same ghilli team

I am totally unhappy with the movie. The entire climax of the movie is taken from the telugu super hit movie "Chatrapati", thus making it no less than a remake movie. The script is vague and outdated - Going to save the slaves from the villains. Ashish Vidyarthi has done his job perfectly but Suman is wasted as the villain. Trisha performance is good but the onscreen chemistry as in ghilli is missing.

There are few scenes in the first half which look like "The mask of zorro" and "Sign of love". For a director who has given a hattrick, this is not a movie worth to mention.........

even as a vijay fan, i was disappointed with this film like karthikka and nets, i loved the comedy, vivek rocked 👏 ...i even liked trisha in this film, which is a first! 😕
it also dragged a bit...the villains were too typical...there were too many good guys being killed...vijay was portrayed as superman 😕 ...argh, so many complaints...i think i expected another gilli

Nets, we were at Federal, midnight show. It was awful. The cinema was packed, the crowd was rowdy, it was stinking that both my brother and mother had anxiety attacks. Mum's was mild, but bro who was recovering from an illness, could not hack it and left.

The humour was great; Saranya had me in giggles esp when she did the Govinda Govinda part - I had just taken a slug of water and had to really control not to spit it out - that is my sister's speciality. And the song Vivek sang in the plane. 😆

Couldn't enjoy the songs Nets, the noise was too deafening, though I must say that I liked Trisha's saree blouses. 😉 Yeah, cool to see KLCC and the monorail. I told my Mum that I use the monorail, I am always loitering around KLCC and how come I did not know about all the filming that was going on. Anyway, I have discovered a new club called O Range so I have to go and check it out. 😉

Right from the beginning, when Vijay drives the souped-up can for a car in the race and the ludicrous race itself, I knew that Kuruvi would be a Vangoli. Too many actors, too crammed up sets, everything was a bomb. Malavika looked good though.

Sorry, Nets, Vijay did nothing for me. How could Dharani get it so wrong this time? Ghilli was so refreshing in comparison.
