This happens. There’s no denying that. In the same light, I know many who also want to wear it. Do you see the common denominator here? Women being told what to do with their body. That’s the issue.

So just wanted to mention a couple of things -

1) Hijab is required in Islam, however like most religions, people interpret and follow as best as they can. This is where individual choice comes in. There a spectrum to religious following. There are those that follow some aspects of what's written, to the ones that take everything by the book. I don't wear a hijab, but know a lot of girls that do wear it by choice. With this is mind, it is similar to a turban in Sikhism. Not all Sikh men wear a turban but it is required/encouraged. To me, this is the same as banning turbans.

2) It is not anyone's responsibility to impose a ban on hijab just coz some girls are forced to wear it by their families, when others wear it by choice. That's not the solution. You're doing the same thing to them. Forcing your own choice under the guise of women empowerment.

3) Everything is relative in life. For a girl wearing a hijab, it stands for modesty. For some non-Muslim desi girl, perhaps enforcing her to wear swim suit for PE during swimming would be immodest. Who has the right to judge?

4) Let women make their own decisions, stop making decisions on their behalf. I'm so tired of men thinking they know better. This whole "love jihad" nonsense (hindu girls don't know any better and get trapped into Muslim marriages), abortion rights being removed in Texas, ban on hijab because Muslim women don't KNOW they're being oppressed. How about you let the women choose? Let us choose.

Hijab represents oppression.

However rosy tint anyone gives to it.

These young girls, falling prey to propaganda and religious pressure, when government is trying desperately for women empowerment.

How pardah system was condemned, so should such practices where women are forced to be always modest.

Why not enforce strict rules for men too. The only rule for them apparently is to lower your gaze. How in the world is this practical.

Do women in burqa and hijab and niqab not get raped.

I am shocked by the women defending a hijab and calling it women's choice. When in fact it's not. It's been inculcated onto their thinking or forced that Hijab means you are good Muslim.

As always the burden of tradition and culture forced on women.

Such practices only alienate women and reduce their freedom and progress.

And such stupid statements like wear a bikini or whatever is not helping anything.

We are seeing the live example in Afghanistan, Iraq , etc. Where the plight of women is horrible. Even the economy and societal structure is terrible.

Even in Pakistan, where forced conversions are still happening. Why Malala or any other activist not open their mouth against it? Oh right, because they will get shot again by the very followers of this sharia law.

I don't want India to fall back, especially the women.

It already is, by taking away religious freedom. Would you now go to nuns and force them to remove their head coverings as well? Or would you go into the villages in India and force Rajasthani women to remove their dupattas and pallus? Let people live by their own customs as long as they're not hurting anyone else.

THATS YOUR OPINION. If Hijab is an oppression then here’s a simple solution, you don’t wear it. Okay boo? If there are women who don’t find it oppressing and want to wear it, then let them do what they want. Okay boo? You shoving down your opinions on how women should dress and shaming them for wanting to cover themselves is exactly the same as shaming a woman who wants to do the opposite.

Comprehend? 🙃

Who are you to tell women they are being oppressed after taking their freedom away?

Zabardasti?

What? people are free to wear what they want, however if you join an organisation where there is a clear dress code, the you abide by it, and if your religious obligations are in conflict with that dress code, and more important to you, then leave and join another one, but don't just turn up one day and start kicking up a fuss and try to force everyone to bend to your demands.

Hijab isn’t oppression, I’m an Accountant who “chose” you read that? Chose to follow hijab as a part of her faith. My sister is a Doctor and my cousin is a Nurse.

If you’re not a Muslim maybe you shouldn’t talk on our behalf without having the basic understanding of what our religion expects from us.

So speaking on behalf of women who chose to wear hijab I assure you we’re progressive, outspoken, have all the freedom in the world. A headscarf and our body covered doesn’t stop us from working or doing everything a women wearing skirt can do.

Maybe you should learn to differentiate between choice and force. It will make life easier for you and you’ll be able to respect a women who chooses to practice her faith the best way she can.

Strange India is becoming like Afghanistan and Iraq where a minority is not able to freely choose to follow their faith.
