Ruhaani Drabble
Sleepy and Studious
There was always too much to study. Words started to blur together. Which was a bone, and which was a muscle? Forgetting even the most basic things. Suhaani weaved between the shelves of the library with a stack of books in her arms. One more anatomy textbook, and she could finally sit down and prepare for exams.
“There is it!” She exclaimed in a hushed voice. The librarian was stern, and enforced rules with an iron fist. No noise allowed. If someone angered him enough with constant rule breaking, they would get kicked out.
Before anyone else could have it, she reached for the thick textbook and was about to add it to the stack in her arms. Her eyes wandered to the empty spot on the shelf, and out popped a familiar skeleton in the space. She screamed, almost dropping a few of the books on the floor. She could feel the piercing gaze of the librarian from his desk. Quickly mouthing a sorry, she looked back.
“Who–”
Instead of a skeleton, a familiar pair of black eyes stared back. Suhaani sighed and smacked her forehead.
“This loafer never does anything normally.”
She set the books on an empty table and turned a corner. There Ranveer was standing with her skeleton model in hand.
“How are you going to study if you forget about your materials in the lab?”
He was rather loud. Suhaani covered his mouth with her hand and shushed him.
“I must’ve forgotten in a hurry. You didn’t have to scare me with it.” She scolded.
She took the model from his hands and took it back to the table. The librarian was staring right at them, mainly at Ranveer. Suhaani looked at both of them and pulled him down into a chair.
“Thanks.” She whispered. “Now sit quietly.”
“So many books? Are you planning to become a doctor tonight?” He joked, looking through the pile of material. Suhaani shook her head.
“I need to review for next week’s exams, and I can’t take all of these home. The more I can read, the better.”
“And you’re going to stress yourself out by reviewing so much. It’s not good for your health.” He stood up. “I’ll be back in half an hour. You can borrow my old notes.”
“But–”
He was out faster than she could say anything else. Sometimes she thought he was more passionate about her dream than she was. Was he going back to the hostel to get them? She shook her head and opened the first book, pen in hand and empty pages open underneath. At least the librarian wasn’t glaring in her direction anymore.
Ranveer kept a lot of his old notes neatly in his desk. John and Raghu were out. He searched through his drawers for the materials she would need, and rushed back like he was about to miss a train. He noticed Suhaani already looked exhausted before she even sat down. It looked like she pulled an all-nighter just the night prior.
As he expected, when he went back to the library, Suhaani had tired herself out and with an open textbook under her, fell asleep upon it. Her hair fell over her face, covering her eyes. Ranveer set his notes down, and arranged them with annotations while she got a quick nap in. Not knowing that sleepiness could be contagious, he let out a big yawn and laid his head on the desk too. She wasn’t the only one who didn’t get much sleep last night.
“Good night, Ms. Zimmedaari.” He murmured, even though it was still bright out.
