As an aside: Allow itself puts a boundary on choice. From one perspective it puts the onus on you to choose better. From another perspective it binds your choices to behave in a certain way. From one perspective, it let's you loose to choose whatever you want. It puts you within brackets also, and gives you freedom also. To be free in reality you have to free yourself of a lot of things, which society cannot allow. Without the structure created by this very society, humanity per se could collapse. So there is Rules, Allowances, Options, Choices. Words with different meanings but at the end of the day made to fit humans into accepted standards.

For me, 'allowing' myself to choose from whatever choices that may be available to me in a certain circumstance (which may ofcourse be limited due to societal constraints), although hypocritical, is still OK.

But, having someone else dictate to me what I am 'allowed' to choose is not OK.

Although in way, that 'someone' who dictates terms is always there in some form, even in the first scenario I described - in the form of society, government,family circumstances etc.... Only that there is no 'face' associated with that somebody in the first scenario. Whereas, in the second scenario, there is 'face' associated with the person who is dictating the terms,and that would make me feel more like I'm being controlled.

Don't know if I made any sense. Sorry if I didn't.
