John's high hopes for Aashayein
John Abraham's otherwise shy parents made a guest appearance at the unveiling of the first look of his forthcoming film, Aashayein, on Tuesday evening at a suburban five-star hotel. Interestingly daddy Abraham John and mommy Phiroza had coaxed John to take up the film when the actor had mentioned the storyline to them, in passing. The poster boy's parents have a special attachment to the film, as the philosophy of (the film) 'hoping against hope' is what John's grandfather, the late PC John, practised and preached.
Talking fondly about his father Abraham says: "My father and John's grandfather was a great believer in hope. All through his life, he believed and preached that there is a ray of hope even at the darkest moments of life."
Aashayein is a compelling story of a compulsive gambler (John), who loses all his wealth while pursuing gambling. Even after being reduced to a pauper, he keeps hoping and gradually he wins all that he had lost.
Abraham recounts the stories of hope that his father used to tell the family in moments of crisis. He says: "My father used to tell us the story of David. David comes home utterly disturbed one evening, as he owed 1000 shekels to an acquaintance. His wife calms him down and tells him to eat his food and retire for the day, and promises to help him. David, who is under the impression that his wife will clear his debts, goes off to sleep. David's wife visits the acquaintance and tells him that he should be the one getting worried as they don't have any money to give him. The lesson to be learnt is that one should never give up hoping."
Immediately after seeing the first look of the film, Abraham and Phiroza called up John, who is filming in Miami for Dostana. They had a conversation that lasted for 20 minutes. John was surprised to know that his parents had attended the function on Nagesh Kukunoor's request. A close family friend reveals, "John was taken aback as his parents hardly watch any films and they prefer to be away from media glare."
