Ahh so many beautiful childhood memories associated with this song including my grandpa’s translation of the lyrics -
In the wind is flying, my red dupatta of muslin 😆
Thank you Neha! You brought back some lovely memories for me! 🤗
Thanks for sharing this Mousy!
Kishoreda’s voice is so full of love, admiration and respect for the man who did so much for his career as a singer. It was beautiful and touching to listen to!
S.D.B was truly a master of his craft!

The previous post on Kishoreda speaking about Burmanda is the perfect opening for me to pen a tribute to another celebrated music director in Hindi cinema - Panchamda or R.D. Burman whose death anniversary falls on Jan 4.
Panchamda acquired much of his musical legacy from his illustrious father, S.D Burman and his mother, Meera but his innate talent was his own. Known as something of a child prodigy, his father's works such as 'Ae meri topi palat ke aa' and 'Sar jo tera chakraye' are attributed to him having composed these tunes as a child. It is rumored that Ashok Kumar known as Dada Moni conferred upon him the moniker of Pancham because he jokingly said that baby Pancham's crying resembled the fifth note in the octave!
He learned Sarod from Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and the tabla from Samta Prasad and would spend hours watching jugalbandis between his guru and the Sitar Maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar that got him into the nuances of Indian Classical music.
His interest in Western music, mainly Jazz grew mostly because of Kersi Lord, a musician in S.D. Burman's troupe. His early years were spent in Calcutta and then Burmanda brought him to Bombay in 1955 during which time he began acting as Dada's assistant. Guru Dutt offered him his first film as MD, Raaz which unfortunately got shelved. Then in 1961, Mehmood offered him his first film as producer 'Chhote Nawab'. This film didn't do too well and Pancham had to wait 4 more years before he got his first big break in the form of Goldie Anand's 'Teesri Manzil'. In between he did movies like Bhoot Bangla and Teesra Kaun.
It's unclear how Teesri Manzil landed in RDB's lap. It's well-known that Nasir Hussain planned to make the movie with Dev and knowing Dev's favorite was SDB it's not a stretch to imagine his first pick for MD would be him. Then Nasir Hussain had a falling out with Dev and both Dev and he walked out of the film, and now Goldie Anand was directing with Shammi Kapoor as lead. Shammi Kapoor, of course, swore by Shankar Jaikishen and then perhaps O.P Nayyar, so it had to have taken a lot of convincing for him to accept the 'new boy' RDB. It seems Majrooh saab may have had a hand in coaxing Goldie and Shammi to give RDB a chance. Shammi was, not surprisingly, hesitant and RDB had to play all the songs he had composed to Shammi who was mighty impressed. But he insisted on having Rafi sing for him as was the norm. The rest, as they say, was history. Teesri Manzil catapulted RDB into the musical hall of fame and matching baton sticks with contemporaries such as Kalyanji- Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal and the likes of them. Let's be honest, RDB had no 'real' competition other than LP and KA to an extent. All the other MDs who had ruled the roost in the 50s and 60s were on their way out.
Then the phenomenon called Rajesh Khanna hit in the late 60s with 'Aradhana'. RDB had composed for Nasir Hussain's 'Baharon ke Sapne' too with Rajesh Khanna in the lead, but it was 'Aradhana' that truly launched him as a superstar. And it's said Aradhana's music, although credited to his father, was hugely influenced by R.D.
Then came Padosan, Caravan, Yaadon ki baaraat, and the iconic Hare Rama Hare Krishna and by the turn of the decade R.D. Burman was firmly entrenched in the upper echelons of music composers. His partnership with Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Gulzar is even now counted as one of the most successful musical collaborations in Hindi Film history.
My first memory of RDB's music was the vinyl EP my father owned of 'Amar Prem', the only work of RDB my dad could tolerate, dismissing all of his other music as 'noise'. For my brother and me, however, little rebels that we were, having 'discovered' his tunes over the radio, there was no shaking our RD love. For the longest time, right from my teen years to my early adulthood, I refused to believe there was a greater musical genius than him in Hindi film music. I know now that this is a biased view, and none of those brilliant musicians and singers from that era are in any way comparable or lesser than anyone else, but the sheer joy and exuberance in his tunes so heavily influenced an entire generation that it's hard to discredit him for his accomplishments. Who can forget 'Dum maro dum' and 'Chura liya hai tumne' not to mention his mellower tunes like 'Rimjhim gire saawan' and 'Aanewala pal'?
His personal life wasn't the stuff of dreams however and at an early age he had got into smoking pot. That was what had prompted the elder Burman to bring him to Bombay. His first marriage to Rita Patel ended in a divorce after which he married Asha Bhosle in the 80s. R.D was smitten with her and was a fan and when they began collaborating musically, it brought them closer and he proposed. It took a while for Asha to say yes though. Their marriage was fraught with conflicts too. His incessant smoking and alcoholism eventually led to their separation but they continued to care for each other and their mutual respect and love for music held them together. She supported him when his health deteriorated and was by his side when he passed away due to a heart attack at the very young age of 54.
Let's post our favorite R.D. Burman songs in a tribute to this talented genius.
Starting with a few of my favorites:

Thanks Mousy! Fursat se sunoongi dono!
Haan Panchamda ki pakad aisi thi ke unhone poore generation ko influence kiya. I think the 70s in India is synonymous with his music!
Its very difficult to choose fav RD songs, bahut saare hain.
Love this song, different from typical Shammi-Rafi combo.

Song based on Raag Shiv Ranjni. Initially Kishoreda refused to sing becoz he thought vo classical nhi ga payenge, but Pancham forced him to sing, so he said ki pahle Lata gayegi, mein usko sununga fir gaunga, he took Lata version recording & practice 7 days & thn recorded this song. I like this version more.
