32 Years Of MPK: Salman's debut film that made him a star overnight

When 'Maine Pyar Kiya’ came out on December 29, 1989, it stunned the young hearts with its innocent love and made Bhagyashree and Salman Khan stars overnight. The film today is celebrating its 32 years.

A Bollywood cult romance, 'Maine Pyar Kiya' was the highest grossing Indian film of the decade (1980s) and is still considered as one of the 10 most successful Bollywood films.

Right from songs to dialogues to clothes, everything about Maine Pyar Kiya became an epitome of friendship and romance and remained in trend for the longest time. Costumes and accessories worn by lead actors in Maine Pyar Kiya became so popular that they were later put up on sale, especially the 'FRIEND' cap. This was the first time ever that a film's merchandise was up for grabs.

Dialogues from Maine Pyar Kiya are unforgettable, especially 'Dosti ka ek usool hai madam, no sorry no thank you'.

As much as the film was a hit for Salman Khan’s career, it was as much a hit for Sooraj Barjatya. After Maine Pyar Kiya, most of the star cast of the film became regulars in Barjatya's future films too. Actors including Alok Nath, Reema Lagoo, Rajeev Verma, Ajit Vachani, Mohnish Behl, Laxmikanth Berde and Salman Khan have been part of most Barjatya films.

It's quite interesting to note that Maine Pyar Kiya is the only Barjatya film that had villains and action scenes.

Did you know that Maine Pyar Kiya was dubbed in English as 'When Love Calls'? The dubbed version became the biggest hit in the Caribbean market at Guyana and also Trinidad and Tobago.

Besides English language, Maine Pyar Kiya was also dubbed in Tamil as 'Kaadhal Oru Kavithai', in Malayalam as 'Ina Praavukal' and in Spanish as 'Te Amo'.

Maine Pyar Kiya proved its Universal appeal with a glorious 10 week premiere run at Lima, Peru.

The soundtrack of the movie sold more than 10 million units and became the best-selling soundtrack of the year.

Out of 13 nominations at the Filmfare Awards, Maine Pyar Kiya bagged seven awards including Best Film, Director, Male Debut and Female Debut and set the record for maximum awards won by a single at that time. Maine Pyar Kiya held its record for winning maximum awards until in 1995; Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge came and won 10 Awards out of 13 nominations.

Success of this film and QSQT set trend for romantic family dramas in Bollywood and brought back family audiences to theatres.

Its music was huge hit. It is still one of highest selling music albums of all time in India.

Salman became overnight craze after this film. Bhagyashree also could have done a lot more if she did not get married so soon.

The trope of hero going to heroine's house and trying to prove himself to heroine's dad instead of eloping with heroine is copied from this film. It was repeated in many films later.

The boating in Dil Deewana song, Friend cap and white pigeon became extremely popular after this film. It's an iconic ATBB and trendsetter.

I like it better than HAHK and HSSH because it focuses more on its young, innocent lead couple rather than wasting too much time on drama of huge families. The naivete and innocence of leads makes Bobby, QSQT and MPK what they are.

I think Biwi Ho To Aisi *ing Faroukh Sheikh and Rekha was Salman Khan's debut film.

Biwi ho toh aisi is a small role. MPK is his first full fledged film with a full length role.

Same as how Aamir did an appearance in a small art film called Holi but it is QSQT which is considered his debut film.

Love MPK. The innocent love story has aged so well for me that I still enjoy this movie. Music is also great! Salman-Bhagyashree made such a great pair in this movie.
