Sonu is primarily a romantic singer. Regardless of versatility you attribute to him. He is also a more urban or sweetie pie appeal singer who lacks voice like Kailash Kher and Sukhwinder Singh to carry off earthy, difficult, folk and semi classical songs.

No wonder Sonu's Main agar kahu got overshadowed by Sukhwinder's Dard e Disco in OSO and his Tu hi tu got overshadowed by Sukhwinder's Chaiya Chaiya in Dil Se.

Sukhwinder sounds more masculine which is why he was chosen to sing title song of Dabangg and not another romantic song in that film unlike 'versatile modern day Rafi ka mimic'.

lol now this is some other kind of joke comparing romantic song with item number or a sufi song to item number udit neither can sing chaiya chiaya or nor can sing tu hi tu 🥱,,,,,, Sonu has been a romantic plus perfect fit for emotional songs when sonu sings sad sentimental songs he emote his heart out , and as well had sung sufi songs , tapori songs with real tapori diction and not like udit smiley innocent tapori , can sing classical songs effortlessly , had sung westernized melodies , rock songs , falsettos and what not ..... 🥱

There are songs from pre 2000s decades that are still played by watchmen, truck drivers, taxi drivers. Gori hain kalayian, Pardesi, Jumma Chumma de de, Meri Mehbooba, Chhaiya Chhaiya, are all popular at dhabas and with truckers, cabbies.

Though most popular songs are still from 60s, 70s and early 80s. Lata, Asha, Rafi, Kishore are still heard at bars, dhabas, roadside tea stalls.

Original Rafi is still popular. Not duplicate.

Step out and travel more around Indian states to know how older film music and regional music is way more popular than current Bollywood music among taxi drivers, dhabas, tea stalls, truck drivers, bus drivers etc. They like more rooted stuff and not wannabe western music.
