People lie about these things because of the disapproval they would get if they spoke the truth...let us analyze ourselves as a society and see why anyone would need to hide these things in the first place...why is being old or a Muslim or being white a crime that people are forced to lie about these things...

LOL, do you really think being white would be a crime in INDIA? If anything, Indians have a weakness for white skin. As a white woman, Katrina had that privilege here too.

A white person pretending to be person of color is problematic since it displays just how privileged that white person is. There is a reason blackfishing or brownfishing is considered socially inappropriate. There is context here. Black and Brown identities have been victimised and mocked by white people for centuries. The victim aren't Whites here. It's a form of cultural appropriation to try to appear 'cool' by pretending to be a Brown person when an actual Brown person would be mocked for his natural identity. Like I said, its cultural appropriation this way.

So many White people have come here and adopted Indian lifestyles and welcomed in the Indian society. They never had to resort to brownfishing. Katrina adopted Kaif only for 'marketing herself'. Not that she would be victimized for being white. Far from it.

Cultural appropriation meaning: “the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society.”

Can you please explain to me what cultural appropriation did Katrina do by trying to be one amongst the Indians?

Pretending to be of another race, especially by a White person, is considered cultural appropriation or Blackfishing/Brownfishing. It's offensive and inappropriate. Why did she have to deny her natural identity to 'be one with the Indians'? And she never wanted to be 'one amongst Indians', she only wanted to market herself for her career.

One more thing. What is called cultural appropriation used to be called melting pot not too long ago. Keeping cultures side by side and suspicious of each other has another name for it. Divide and rule. The Brits tried it with massive success. Not sure if I want that happening in the U.S.

THIS THIS THIS!!...👏

I would call it as imitation is the best form of flattery...lol..

Again as long as no disrespect is meant....it is all good..

Yeah, racism is a thing. But things have changed massively in the last 40 plus years since Indians started migrating in great numbers. One of the reasons why the change happened is that other races learned about and accepted different cultures.

It happened with the Irish. It happened with Italians. Slower, but it's happening with East and South Asians. Yeah, the pace is different prob because of skin color and greater differences in culture. But why would you go to a place as a migrant and expect everyone to be instantly accepting of all differences? There will always be a spectrum of reactions. That is just human nature. Those migrating best be prepared to fight it.

The other thing is the lack of effort to fit in. Even 10 years ago, I've seen and heard many Indian uncles and aunties who go on and on and on about Western culture and forbid (unsuccessfully) their kids from socially mingling.

This creates an identity crisis in kids' minds. Indians growing up in India don't have that problem because they know who they are and where they belong. Thanks to the bigotry from both sides, ABCDs end up imagining themselves as a special group. So when westerners adopt the clothes, music, food, etc, even without disrespect, the reaction is, "hey, don't steal our identity from us."

Sometimes, I also wonder if the objectors realize that when 1-plus billion Indians are quite happy to share their culture, what right do the NRIs--who voluntarily left the country for whatever reasons--have to impose their views on the people who stayed? EDITED TO ADD: There was a Pretentious Movie Review of DDLJ where Kanan and Biswa asked the same thing. Why go on about India when you left the place for money?

I guess that brings up another question .... when is it okay to borrow aspects of someone else's culture? We're a land of immigrants and people are bound to mix things up every now and then just for fun. I guess the more people start respecting each other, the less problematic it will be when the ones in the position of privilege take up traditions of minorities for creative purposes. Still, the racism is still so rampant the higher up you go that you can't help but roll your eyes when they pick and choose parts of your identity to enhance their power. Yes, it does enhance their already skewed power when they get to look "better" or "prettier" than the actual minorities who they are borrowing from.

You also gotta acknowledge how people like Kim K blackfishing and appropriating black culture and suddenly everyone in the world including white girls hitting the gym to build their glutes to fit the definition of "hot" impacts black women who are naturally built that way but were mocked for it since time immemorial before Kim K made it not only acceptable but the way to be.

Not saying that everyone should only stick to their own roots while dressing up and to kill all forms of creativity and experimenting but it needs to be done mindfully, tastefully and needs to be an educated choice.

Ayesha Shroff admitted that the 'Kashmiri dad' story is a lie.

Also, that's what my point was. White people have never had to lie that they were Brown in order to enter Bollywood. Remember Yana Gupta? Jacqueline is Sri Lankan. Not White, but definitely a foreigner. They never had any problem.

I get why black women would be upset about not being accepted for their bodies before Kim K. But someone has to make the start somewhere. Kim clearly thought it was hot and accepted it. And with acceptance comes imitation.

Anyway, respect is the key in my opinion. I've worn a qipao I got in San Fran to several parties. For me, it was a beautiful dress I got at a price I could afford. Since I'm no one famous, and my Chinese friends understand me well enough, I didn't get accused of any appropriation.

Why is Katrina still jobless?

She hasn’t done a movie in quite sometime. Is she retired? Why is she not getting offers? All her past films bombed. What do you think?
