For example, in Life is a Metro Shilpa Shetty's character is attracted to Shiney Ahuja's character because he is everything her husband isn't - sweet, caring, affectionate and loyal. Yet when she is about to run away with him, her sense of duty stops her and she lets go of his hand - a heart-breaking scene if you ask me.

Do you think infidelity can be excused if the husband/wife is a jerk? Or do you think it is wrong as a blanket rule?

I think I will be okay with 'infidelity' if there's nothing left in the marriage. I know spouses who have a 'marriage' but have been living in separate rooms for years. Sometimes two ppl are just a 'family' but not a couple *shrugs*

Baki in case of the movie, she should have left her husband. Guy was pathetic. Par BW movies mein Biwi always has to worry about 'duties' first.

Infidelity can be supported even if the spouse is not a jerk

Infidelity is always morally reprehensible. But all humans do morally reprehensible things at some point or another. Whether they deserve forgiveness and sympathy depends on the situation.

It can be hard to leave abusive people, so people cheat rather than ending the marriage. That being said even a seemingly good spouse can make people feel unhappy and unfulfilled. Despite being in love people can hurt each other, make them feel lonely, and neglected. As a society we tend to have sympathy for the abused spouse - but loneliness and depression weigh on people too.

I think it becomes more difficult when there are children in the equation. May be thats why she didn't leave?

I often realise that I can’t judge others with my own moral yardstick. I don’t know the details of their lives, the things they deal with on a daily basis and how hard things can be.

But still, if this question is to be answered, I will just share my moral compass.

I would support a person seeking love elsewhere, if their spouse is a full time jerk. We are all jerks on different occasions, but if your spouse is unbearable and making you unhappy on a regular basis, then I support this decision to find love and comfort elsewhere.

But I would also want the straying spouse to take a final step to end their relationship. It makes me uncomfortable when people cite that they are unhappy in a marriage and continue to have extra marital affairs on the side. If you truly want to be with someone else, initiate the end of the current one as soon as possible. The divorce need not be final, but atleast taking the step towards a separation is what is acceptable to me in this scenario.

Husband not being sweet, caring and affectionate are not good enough reasons. Not being loyal is another story.

It's complicated. There are cases where the husband actually neglects or abuses the wife and there are ones where she interprets it that way so as to not feel guilty about cheating.. When the woman( or the man) is suffering in a marriage and has no way of getting out, the cheating can be justified because her partner has already broken other vows . But being bored or not having the 'spark' anymore is not an excuse to wake up in other people's beds.
