Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherjee were first choices for Guru. Aamir Khan was not interested to play older role Dhirubhai Ambani. Mani told him, ok we will work together in my next Lajjo, a period love story after this film. Aamir Khan verbally agreed.

Later Mani Ratnam signed Abhishek for Guru after Abhishek was highly praised for Yuva. It was going to be Abhishek and Rani Mukherjee but Abhishek was dating Aishwarya during Dhoom 2 shooting. Rani was hoping Abhishek would prose her but when he had better option Aishwarya why would he date Rani? She was heart broken. Aishwarya was looking for a good role. She was in very bad phase that time in bollywood. Rani replaced her in so many films, Chalte Chalte, Paheli, KANK. So, it was a revenge from Ash to replace Rani in a big film. Aishwarya asked Mani to sign her in that housewife role. Mani signed her and kicked off Rani from the film. Vidya Balan was cast in other female role but her role was chopped off at editing table and turned it a cameo role. Vivek was first signed for Madhavan's role but later when Ash is signed Vivek was out. Finally, Abhishek, Aishwarya and Mithun were given limelight in the film. Madhavan and Vidya got sidelined.

Aishwarya was supposed to win best actress for Guru if Jab We Met was not release in same year. She got best actress nomination for it in all award function.
