Part 2:
Virat could not believe that it was Sai who was standing in front of him. It felt like only yesterday that he and Sai were sitting in the admissions office at Nagpur Medical College and went on their first outing together to celebrate with ice-cream, street food and balloons. And today...he felt his heart swell with pride seeing her in her white coat, with “Dr. Sai Joshi” embroidered on it and a stethoscope around her neck.
Ever since he had seen Sai this morning when they had brought Inspector Ved to the hospital, all he could think about was her. He will never forget the look he saw on her face when she had seen him, the initial recognition mixed with shock followed by the hurt that reflected on her face...the same look that has haunted him all these years since that night.
“ACP Chavan...” Sai called out again breaking Virat out of his trance. “Did you need anything???” she looked at him questioningly. “Yes... I need you, Sai,” Virat thought but instead he said “I just wanted to ask how Inspector Ved was doing? He....” Virat hesitated for a second debating on whether or not he should tell Sai what had happened and decided against it. “I just need to make sure he is going to be okay,” Virat said. “ACP, I can’t give you too much information since you are not immediate family but all I can say is he will be okay.” Sai said. “I understand and thank you,” Virat said trying to prolong the moment. “There is no need to thank me, I was just doing my job, if there isn’t anything else...” Sai said glancing at her phone but before she could continue Virat gently placed his hand on her wrist. “Sai, how are you?”
Sai slowly pushed Virat’s hand away from her wrist. Just as she was about to say something, the door behind her swung open.
Karan stepped out of the doctor’s lounge and almost ran into Sai. “Oh, here you are, I was just about to come looking for you. Nurse Aarti told.....,” Karan broke off seeing Sai and Virat looking at each other. “Oops, sorry, I did not mean to interrupt.” “No, no... you are not interrupting. ACP Chavan was just asking about Inspector Ved’s condition. We are done now and he was just leaving,” Sai said relieved with the interruption.
“ACP Chavan... Hi. I’m Dr. Singhania and don’t worry about your inspector. He’s in good hands. Dr. Joshi is one of our best resident doctors and is being trained by the best.” Karan said while putting his hand over Sai’s shoulder. “Are you okay, ACP sir?” Karan asked seeing Virat’s face turn pale. “Yes, I am fine ... and you can call me Virat,” Virat said unable to take his eyes from the hand that Karan had protectively put over Sai.
“You don’t look fine. Did you get checked out earlier? If not, we should probably do a quick physical just to make sure. If you are not in a hurry, I can...” Karan said as one of the nurses ran towards them. “Dr. Singhania, I know you are not on call and are about to leave, but one of the patients that had surgery this morning is being taken in again, and we could use your help.” “Yes, of course. I’ll be right there,” and turning to Sai and Virat, “Sorry, I’ve got to go, Sai, why don’t you check ACP Virat out before you leave, just to make sure he’s okay.” Karan turned and ran after the nurse leaving Virat and Sai.

“Sai, it’s okay. I am feeling fine, just tired from the day.” “No ACP Chavan, Karan is right, you need to get checked out. Why don’t you come with me,” Sai gestured asking him to follow her to the examination room that was right around the corner.
